Actually it makes sense that Afton might start with the murder-claw robots. If Charlie died while being hugged by the puppet, one might think that the kids have to be somehow connected physically to the animatronic while dying, and the best way to ensure that is to have the animatronic encase someone. Later on, he learns more and realizes he can just stuff a dead body into a bear suit - true scientific advancement.

This is like in painting. Where at first you think you need 1000 diffrent colors bought to make a painting until you remember you can just mix primaries. In this theory man also over thinks and created a machine to put something inside an object instead of just shoving it by hand. Lol
@Malthizar
@Malthizar Жыл бұрын
I also think this is why Cassidy's death was as violent as it was and created such an impact. He'd been used to claw clamping kids and the actual steps required to do it by hand may have been surprisingly difficult right out of the gate.
@gabrielkorzanowski3844
@gabrielkorzanowski3844 Жыл бұрын
Also, Matpat talks about how William had to have such a strong connection with the bunny suit, It would make sense he would be hesitant to try murdering the kids by himself risking not only himself and a lack of alibi, but also the character he loved so much and was already resentful It wasnt as important in other Locations. That means, he probably tried to do the remote killings with New robots só that he wouldnt have any risks, and *then* he decided to try killing again, and kind of went on a "killing spree". If he really had been as happy as Matpat says in the vídeo about killing children, he probably wouldnt have stopped at Just Charlie and taken 2 whole more years to try killing by hand again, even If the original Restaurant was closed because of the accidents, the one with Fredbear and Spring Bonnie, he wouldnt have been a suspect of anything, so unless he was trying or planning something else, he wouldnt have the need to wait so long. It also ties in with the whole "Fredbear" Restaurant closing event, since It would've been right after Family's dinner closing after both deaths of the CEOs at the time, of C.C. and Charlie, and would be considered a big thing.

The escalation (or should I say, deescalation) of William actually makes sense to me if Sister Location is early in the timeline. He kills Charlie, discovers remnant, and then approaches it very scientifically. He knows he went too far with Charlie’s death, but he has to know more. He doesn’t want to get his hands dirty again. So he builds the Fun Times, knowing what they’re for, he warns Elizabeth to stay away from them. Her death is what sends him over the edge and begins his devolution. He becomes less feeling and doesn’t care to get his hands dirty. I think it fits. It makes sense that he becomes less afraid to do the killings himself, first hand, after the loss of his child/children. He becomes slowly more unraveled. The Devolution of Afton.
@katiehanson2290
@katiehanson2290 Жыл бұрын
And to add onto that, Charlie’s murder was much more like a crime of passion. He was fueled by emotions to do it. When he then gets interested in remnant and wants to study he might not have that same emotional drive to do the act himself so design’s animatronics that do. Then Elizabeth gets scooped, and now desperate to understand it so he’ll do it himself and he doesn’t feel anything really emotionally for the murdered kids. Also I could totally be getting this detail wrong but was the first murder (post Charlie being murder) the one that was super violent and the one he should not have killed? If it was then that could also explain why that one was so violent because it was one of the first.
@ryismazin
@ryismazin Жыл бұрын
I like this also as a narrative. That instead of the reversion to level 3 serial killing from level 10, it's more of a spiral into madness. For example, eating a hamburger is way easier on your conscience if you don't imagine the cute cow that was killed and skinned while eating. I'd assume killing multiple children while lacking rage towards each child would be much easier if it was done secondhand.
@Noblewynter
@Noblewynter Жыл бұрын
@@katiehanson2290the first murder as far as we know now, was charlie. The one he should not have killed and the most violent death was presumably Cassidy who was one of the 5 missing children who all died after charlie and who possessed golden Freddy alongside the crying child. Chica has a voiceline in ucn where she says she was the first and has seen everything but that could be assumed to mean that she was the first child to die in the missing children incident, not the first to die in regards to all the dead children in this franchise as a whole. It can also be assumed that Cassidy was the last child William killed but that's all a matter of opinion at this point.
@natcat818
@natcat818 Жыл бұрын
I had a thought of it also maybe being his only option, as there are voicelines in sl of people already questioning his design choices, and if the restaurant immediately closes down after a failure of these designs then he would have to find a way to continue his experiments on his own. I also don't remember exactly but there was a missing children's incident and a dead children's incident, this could also be evidence of what you are saying where after his daughters death he is less afraid to get his hands dirty, and or his desperation as he gets closer to figuring out remnant but starts to get noticed by the company. I'm not entirely sure but I like your train of thought, where it becomes more personal and he's almost more invested after Elizabeth dies.

I like the idea of him going from using the robots to using his own hands. My theory on why he used the robots first was because he’s always had homicidal urges but never acted on them due to the fear of how he may feel and be afterwards. So he built these robots (for more reasons than one) to do the killing for him but he thinks they would provide him a sort of disconnect from the killing, “it’s not MY doing, the ROBOTS did it”, flawed logic. But that’s to be expected from a psychopath. But then when his daughter was killed by one of them, he felt no disconnect like he hoped. He feels like he killed his own daughter. He can’t blame the robots. So when the machines don’t fulfill a purpose he wanted them to, he decides to go old school. He still has homicidal urges. And this way he doesn’t need to worry about his machines doing unexpected and reckless things. If he does it himself, he gets what he wants and he’s in complete control all the time.

Another possible point of evidence for the discovery of remnant before the missing children's incidents is the fact that if Afton knew about remnant, it would give more of a reason to stuff the dead bodies in the suits rather than dispose of them somewhere else, in an attempt to make the animatronics possessed.

So, this isn't quite related to this video in particular, just FNAF and the Theory channels in general, but it seems as good a place as any to tell this story: I work as a librarian, and this past weekend, someone asked where to find the Five Nights at Freddy's books. Before I was watching these channels, I had no knowledge of this franchise beyond the very basics. Now, though, I was able to further discern what the person was looking for by asking, "Is there any particular book you're looking for? Because I know there's the main novel trilogy, and then there's the series of short story collections." So thank you, MatPat & team, for legitimately helping me do my job more effectively 😄

For the time debacle, as a person of Gen Z (1999), the visual movement of using your wrist to relay the request of time is still prevalent not because of our own usage of wristwatches, but the media we grew up watching and still do watch. Many TV Shows and Movies still use watches as their main source of time and so we can connect the dots if we see someone tapping their wrist to indicate they want the time. For future generations, they'll probably understand it because we do it. Landlines are slowly fading away but the use of holding your hand to your ear with your pinky by your mouth and your thumb by your ear is still being used despite most cell phones being flat and so many people using blue tooth devices or headsets. But I've seen children hold old, wired apple headphones in confusion because there were wires! Children may now replicate these actions because they've seen us do it, but the real question is do they relate wristwatches with time for time's sake or because we've essentially classically conditioned them to think that tapping their wrist will give them the time.

I’m an Urbex ( abandoned buildings ) photographer/explorer in Toronto and there is 100% security at some of the bigger places. For example, there’s a mall that has 24/7 security ( honeydale mall ) the reason why they would have security at abandoned buildings like this is because if anyone gets hurt in there that person can sue the owners, vandalism/arson and squatting laws. There have also been times that movies were filmed at these places like Titans was filmed at Guelph Correctional Centre an abandoned jail. So it makes sense they would have security at a place that’s well known especially that it’ history with the missing children’s same reason why they teardown known serial killer like Paul Bernardo houses

"Anyway, as we were going down into the cave, a boulder suddenly came down behind us, and let me tell you, elephants are horrible with loud noises- what with their big ears and all- and as you can imagine, the noise quite shocked him. He musta jumped a good 3 feet in the air! I have no clue how he got that high, though; you would think an elephant would struggle to get anywhere above an inch off the floor, and yet there he was, flying like Bambi- actually, come to think of it, maybe he used his large ears for the height... "Anyway, after the crash, the boulder blocked off the entrance, along side most of the light from outside. Now, I dunno if you might happen to know this, but elephants really struggle with the dark, much worse than they do with loud noises- maybe it's because they're afraid some mouse may come and get them, or maybe they think they'll stumble over some rock, I don't really know any specifics... "Anyway, as you might imagine, with both the crash and the darkness, Orville was scared to bits- let me tell you, he couldn't even stand up, his limbs were shaking so much- again, though, I wonder how his libs could shake that badly, being so big and bulky... Anyway, he was in total shock, and I said to him, 'Orville, its not so bad; the rock isn't that big, we can probably push it out of the way.' Orville, though, was rambling about mice eating at his feet- ya know what, maybe that is the reason behind him being afraid of the dark... "Anyway, looking for a way to cheer him up, I said to him, 'Orville, sometimes light is what you need to fight the darkness.' Now, I'm not sure if the meaning behind my statement got to his head, but at the very least it seemed jarring enough for him to get up and help push the boulder out of the way. Escalation reasoning: Charlie's murder was a crime of passion, a crime of rage. The claws and scoops are more clinical, scientific, and distanced from the act. Potentially from a time where William hadn't quite tipped over into insanity. Looking for a way to collect this living metal to revive his son. And then it cost him his daughter and that tips him over the edge.
@BlackWind-rx5il
@BlackWind-rx5il Жыл бұрын
I have another possible explanation. What if William wasn't the one to accidently discover remnant, but it was actually Henry? What if Henry had a way to use remnant "the innocent way"? Like what if the reason his animatronics were better than William's is because he used remnant from somebody who died because of accidents or natural causes or illness? And that was his way to keep those people "alive" in his work? And then he revealed this sad truth to William when they became partners? And Willliam got obsessed with it, either because using remnant of his own would have been the only way to be as good as Henry or because he was just fascinated by immortality. And that's when he thought about experimenting by capturing children, only it backfired on Elizabeth. Then Henry realizes what happened, that William now wants more than before to do it because *it worked* with Elizabeth possessing Baby, thus he decides to "send William home" and that's when William gets mad and drunk, goes to confront Henry, finds Charlie out in the rain and kills her in a fit of rage. Remember, in the Insanity Ending of FNAF6, Henry talks about William as "the monster he helped to create". So what if that was referring him teaching him about remnant?
@Malthizar

It would also explain WHY Cassidy's death was so brutal. If he went from brutal Charlie to clinical scooping, the idea that he lost both his daughter and son so soon after one another may have drove him to desperation when killing Cassidy

About the escalation thing, I think it actually makes more sense because at first with robots it's easier for him as it's less personal and he doesn't really have to think about it, but after the death of his daughter he thinks the only way to get it done right is to do it himself instead of his robots, even if it's hard for him to do at first, emotionally/mentally. Since he doesn't really hate kids, only hated specifically Henry's kid because of Henry. So at first he probably did feel bad about killing those kids.

I have another perspective where William taking the kids’ lives with his own hands is more his descent further into madness and obsession with remnant. He has the means to do it on other ways which resulted in the loss of his daughter and he knows it is successful but chooses to do it himself in such a brutal way. Just throwing it out there as a possibility since it does seem off

Could the “escalation” with Afton going from killing with robots to more low tech methods be explained by the emotional toll? I can see how it would be easier to let someone die by robot when you are not there to see. Afton could have been familiar with how it felt to look his victims in the eye from his experience with Charle, and could have built Baby and friends to have a middle bot as well as cover his tracks. As ID mentioned his daughter could have been to high a price for that barrier. In which case going back to a more personal method of killing could have started out as penance as well as control.

I feel like as far as escalation, the mechanic kidnappings first can make sense. So, if he just has twisted curiosity about the puppet, he has no reason to get his hands dirty and he already has an obsession with his robots, so I feel like he would automatically be like “yeah, I can totally make something that could do this” as his next robotic challenge. However, once his daughter is killed by his own creation, now it’s personal and he gets hands on in his anger and grief. So now we go from a twisted man to a deranged serial killer.

I think when it comes to the timeline of the animatronics and their tech level along with Afton's killing methods, it makes sense that he'd dial it back some. Think about it like this: the Funtime animatronics are definitely more advanced than the others, but that's because either they were made after them or because the others in the restaurant don't NEED to be more advanced. Funtimes have a specific intent: blend in, be able to act relatively independently, and capture kids. The ones in the restaurants are there purely for entertainment. There's no reason to make them as advanced as the Funtime ones just like how there isn't a need to make a mascot costume for a baseball game as advanced as an animatronic cosplay or movie prop. Different purposes. Afton making the Funtimes and then going back to killing personally also works because then he has total control of the situation. Baby killing Elizabeth shows him that not having complete control is too dangerous as it could hurt someone he doesn't want hurt or worse, expose him.

She is an excellent creator of theories, despite the fact that she has only been on the platform for a short time, her videos are very interesting, and they deserve our attention. Personally, I have my own idea regarding the temporary placement of Sister Location (I don't have much evidence, but it still makes sense). In my opinion, SL happens at the same time as FNAF 2, during Jeremy's work week, since as you mentioned, Mike could have work in that location, after it was closed, for the same reason of the murder of the children, which apparently happened just before Jeremy's last night. That would explain, not only the design of the toys, which were perhaps created at Afton Robotics, due to the style of the red cheeks, in addition to the appearance of Balloon Boy, but also that it would fit with the copyright of the characters belonging to Freddy Fazbear. This would have been the start of negotiations between the two businesses, since Fazbear was going through good financial times (perhaps the animatronic rental service was what provided them with the income they needed to reopen). This would also fit perfectly with the beginning of Michael's journey to stop his father and make amends, as well as William's appearance as the night guard, then morning guard, from FNAF 2 (probably under a fake name, like Mike), since when he complained about animatronics wanting to enter his office (according to Phone Guy), it would have been when he began to suspect that they were alive, especially because of Puppet (Just my theory thought 😉).

I feel like having William see the puppet first could work pretty well, and still have the Elizabeth moment be a big personal moment. If we are following the narrative that William was obsessed with making something like these animatronics that would bring children the same joy they brought him, then he would obviously be looking for a way to make his legacy everlasting. And it was obvious he was obsessive about this seeing as he killed his "partner's" child over it. But anyway, the moment he sees the puppet after Charlie has possessed it, he realizes that remnant is a thing, and becomes curious. "Maybe there is a way for him to live forever". "Maybe he could truly have a legacy that never ends, cause not even he would die". So to experiment with this, he puts all of his effort and money into creating these ultra advanced snatch and dash animatronics, otherwise known as the Funtimes. That way he could keep himself out of the limelight for a while since the death of Charlie could have still been somewhat fresh on people's minds, but he could also not lose time to research. Then, unfortunately, he loses his daughter to his own creations, causing him to further lose his mind, and go back to killing kids by hand. So all of this to say, I think that this theory really works pretty well, and I'm excited for the talk back!

33:30 The reason he starts with remote killing first is because at heart Afton's a (robotics) engineer. When I (Software engineer) see a problem my first thought isn't how I can do it myself, but how I could write a piece of software to do it for me. It's an engineers nature to solve a problem using our field of expertise. So when Afton needs dead kids for his experiments, his first thoughts would be 'how can I build a robot to do this for me'

@34:50 I think Fazbear Entertainment's (in)famous penchant for cost cutting and saving could be an easy explanation for the shift away from mad genius super killbots to more mundane (but still very advanced) animatronics. The Circus Baby crew seemed very high maintenance, but simpler robots would be much more suitable to deploy to many franchise locations.

I love that we are teaching this younger generation about chronic illness/disabilities/ invisible illness/ mental health/ service dogs/and how to interact properly with them. I have had my service dog for four years. I have over heard more 5 and under children teach their parents how to properly interact with me and my SD. When the parents themselves are acting inappropriately. I have also over heard parents teach their toddlers (and younger) about SD. I personally have a rule if a child is younger than 18 months I don’t mind them interacting or touching my SD. As that age group is my SD weakness and I see it as training for her to not react. But also they are babies. I let them play. Especially if we are in a restaurant or airport I want them to not freak out about a dog in public. I teach in a different way. I say look at the dog do you see the dog? And let them play. Again not letting my SD react, try to teach them as well as the adults SDs will not react to them but will love them. I have faith in humanity that we are growing in educating people in the right direction about mental health, disability, and invisible illnesses.

One thing that the whole escalation then deescalation thing makes me think about how when people are more familiar with tech they tend to trust it less, eg home security and electronic locks or when coders began to understand more about how social media actually works. Maybe as William began to become more proficient in robotics he began to trust it less and realized that relying on the technology would not only leave more evidence due to the animatronics having better memories and how it could go wrong due to the sister location animatronics tendency to disobey orders.

just to throw a personal theory out there. I feel like a detail a lot of theorists miss is the fact that when you're playing sister location, Baby hides the player in a springlock suit (as we all remember) and says it wasn't used for it's intended purpose (presumably it was used for murders, as that's consistent with fnaf at this point). I've been bothered by that for years as the face plates don't match any of the funtime animatronics except for funtime chica. And when looking at her model, she's got five fingers, which is somewhat consistent with springlock suits. Also yes notibly all the funtime animatronics have five fingers, which could be more-so an afton animatronic signature rather than an indication of springlock, at this point everything is a blurred image in regards to this game and it's lore :')

About the charade gestures, I think that even people who don't use watches would still associate tapping the wrist with time. I think it would be similar to a save icon being a floppy disk or a call icon being a landline's handset. Even if they're not familiar with the original items, they do link the icon with the action. So for tapping the wrist, they may not know why that action represents time, but they do link the two.

Really enjoy these theories, and love the way MatPat responds to criticism / other ideas in such an open manner! Just a thought on the whole 'sister location doesn't necessarily come after the other restaurants': there definitely seems to be a technical progression happening with each iteration of the animatronics - from basic half automated / half suits, to fully automatic with child protection, to super shiny / polished with increased capabilities. There's also an evolution in the character designs themselves, it's unlikely that Freddy's design started as silver and polished and sleek, and then 'devolved' into a very simple brown bear. On its own, maybe we could say that Sister Location's placement is unclear, especially considering some of the finer details muddying the timeline, but the funtimes look most similar to the animatronics from Security Breach, which would lead me to conclude that they're the step before. Anything is possible, but I think from a game design / storytelling perspective, it makes no sense to start with futuristic animatronics, then scrap everything and produce something out of the 80s, and then produce next-gen animatronics again.
@tahaniannecj1969
@tahaniannecj1969 Жыл бұрын
I also disagree with the devolution from machine to hands. First, if we consider that one of his kids was hurt in the bite of '87 (or whenever it was) and that he kept being involved and honing his craft, it doesn't make sense for him to stop when his daughter is killed. Second, scientific evolution would be 'accidentally kills child who possesses animatronic', then 'let's test this again: kills another and stuffs their body into a suit' etc etc, 'interesting, can I make this more efficient and do it in a controlled environment: creates funtimes'. I think when trying to fit things together we should attribute more importance to more 'obvious' clues than very specific details (especially considering the number of people who've handled the project and the fact that Scott didn't intend for each additional game to happen and has retconned elements)

Williams Motivations do add up. Charlie being William's first exposure to possession does frame his first murder (Charlie) as impulsive and emotional, nothing more. The discovery of the Possessed puppet could lead to the creation of a capture capable animatronic as curiosity and a potentially lead to the revival of the Crying Child (after all, it could be a trade of a single random child for his youngest son) , and killing children after Elizabeth would suggest that he is even more desperate and dedicated to discovering immortality then ever before, having two dead children to "put back together". After each murder he would most become more callous, and obsessives,. His view of the value of innocent lives plummeting. I think that escalates rather well.

I think the reason the SL animatronics are so advanced is because there were only a handfull made. The other animatronics were from franchise locations, where each location had a more limited budget, and thus couldn't afford the more high tech gear that Circus Baby's had. Also, think about the purpose behind their creation: the SL animatronics were made by William with the sole purpose of capturing children, but the FNaF 2 animatronics, though quite advanced, were only made to entertain children and recognize predators. Though, I could be missing something crucial here, so let me know what you think!

An important detail to look at, since it wasn't mentioned, is that Elizabeth Afton had a Mangle (aka Funtime Foxy) doll/toy in her room in FNAF 4. This proves that Sister Location takes place before FNAF 2. Phone Guy also explains in FNAF 2 that they changed both Foxy's appearance (to be more "kid friendly") and Pirate's Cove to "Kid's Cove" (probably because Funtime Foxy wasn't designed to look like a pirate).

Yay! Been waiting for this second part eagerly! Especially since I feel like all the really good evidence pieces are in the second half of the video. I don't know what it is, but something about the idea of Michael chasing after his father at all these locations and just barely missing him just feels so narratively satisfying to me. That was honestly one of my favorite parts of the whole theory.

Hey MatPat! You probably won’t see this, but I highly recommend watching RyeToast’s newest theory regarding your timeline. I think they come up with a pretty solid alternative to the Mrs. Afton CEO theory for those that are skeptical.

I could see the shift from machine killing to Afton doing it himself. He knows animatronics, it's what he does. Then, oops, Baby eats Elizabeth, and Afton has that "Fine, I'll do it myself." mindset.

Have to wonder how the puppet is still around to be active if William uses it to become aware of remnant. How does the puppet's body survive that encounter? Was pretty sure that early concepts around manipulating remnant involve melting/destroying the metal parts. Also, still wondering if Mangle's animalistic noises and actions imply that its made from Agony. Which could be an early source for that energy's discovery.

I don't think Mapat is giving people enough credit. Firstly, most people I know with a fitness tracker or smart watch 100% will use it to check time, as part of the point of having them, particularly the smart watches, is to not have to constantly be getting your phone out for small things like checking texts or time. Secondly, the youth VERY MUCH know what record players are, because vinyl has had a weird resurgence with Gen Z for the vintage "cool" factor.

I love Mat talking about watches as if they're as outdated as oubliettes. No matter what looking at your wrist will be faster than pulling out and turning on your phone. And even if it was some outdated technology, it's not like they'll never know about it; especially since looking at your wrist is still a sign of time, which could even be separated from the concept of watches. Plus in some universe where watches end up obsolete, the next generation has a modern-day Library of Alexandria in the form of the internet to figure it out.

I think feel like a lot of people focus way too hard on evidence. I feel like not a lot of people stop to ask "but why would he do that" and that is why I love your theories mat!

20:02 Wait wait Play that back Williams earliest designs had inner claws? This cracks everything wide open. And even more so, I think we have to stop seeing William as a grief maddened father and start to see him as a serial monster.

I 100 back up Matpat on the "a location can be closed and still have activity" thing. There are several resteraunts in my city, all of them big chains, that closed a location or build a new building but because they still owned the previous location used it for storage or other things. That entirely checks out

I absolutely indicate time by pointing at my wrist because that's the motion I've associated with time since I was a child, but I also wear a watch and use it to check time more often than my phone. (For reference, I'm 19)

I already watched her video and I don’t really have an hour to spare, the reason I clicked on the video was to see your reaction to her shoutout. Worth it.

I think a extremely major point when talking about cut lines is that there’s a reason that they were cut, like it’s completely possible that most of the cut lines in the franchise are written and then they realised that it DOESNT fit with the lore and then they change it. So literally opposite of being able to use it as theory evidence.
