This VN really let's you get to know your chosen love interest, really learn to like them, then spends the rest of the game doing things to them that even 4chan would ban you for posting images of. It's cruel, inhuman, utterly brutal, and at the same time very well written. It's good enough to make you want to keep playing even though the previous bad end you ran into, thanks to you not wanting fucking toast for breakfast, was still keeping your therapist living in his penthouse apartment on the nice side of town.

@@Kakaragi well, for beginners, Higurashi is not guro. Hell, it's gorey but not as gorey as the anime, since there are barely any gore visuals (except some descriptions). I haven't played Gore Screaming Show, but I've heard that despite the title, it isn't all about gore haha Gore is just the name of the guy who tries to kill you. While idk anything abt GSS (YET), Higurashi is mostly a mystery novel (the horror/paranoia bit is mostly during chapter 1, you get used to it as time goes on) about friendship and doubting your friends. It's goated, I recommend the visual novel itself. I've heard pretty good things from GSS too.

Tbh, I never understood the decision-making aspect of visual novels. For example, you're asked if the tea isn't too hot and your options are "It's OK.", "It's a bit warm." Then somewhere down the line if you picked "It's OK" you get shanked by the girl who made the tea and if you picked the "It's a bit warm." you end up blowing her back out instead. Like, how does that even work? What's the thought process behind it?

It depends on the game. GSS (though I'll never play it ever) seems like the type of game that wants to keep you on edge after the first wrong ending. Games like that want you to think about the choices you are making no matter how mundane so nothing horrible happens. In a different game however, the bad ending choices are stacked, like the difference between getting shanked and being loved (and shagged) is consistently acting a certain way that the love interest (or other character) likes, dislikes or is neutral about (which is standard as far as I know for dating sims and vn). Like you can have a few outlying moments that may lead to a less happy ending, or it just leads you to a standard good ending. TL;DR Depending on the game creator, the decision making can be used to make players act or think a certain way, for better or for worse.

I played Gore Screaming Show yesrs ago with a fan translation. The closest VN I can compare it to is Maggot Baits, just more Canaan in the first half and more violent and less sexually adventurous in the 2nd or bad end routes, but much more violent, at least in an early 2000's kind of way. GSS is a product of its time, so don't expect too many features or mechanics, its pretty bare bones in that dept. If you want to play other seemingly normal romantic VNs with a dark twist I really recommend the original Muv Luv series, and if you want more romance, less actual violence, but still tragically dark story telling I'd recommend Eidelweis, a seemingly very normal dating sim with alchemy elements thrown in, and the original Kira Kira, a VN about of high schoolers at a Japanese Catholic school starting a punk band. Great music. (Dark ending only for the main route first ending, but that still rips my heart out to this day when I think about it. Dark, tragic, but still a great ending).

Back when you released the video about Sadistic Blood I decided it would be a great idea to buy it myself out of sheer morbid curiosity. It traumatised me so much that I couldn’t 100% it. I managed to end the game with a good ending at least but I just left it there. So I really don’t know why I decided to buy Gore Screaming Show even though it’s marketed as a guro vn made by the same people that made Sadistic Blood. But at least the censorship options are better and more specific so that’s something 🤷‍♀️ Since I have a weak stomach to guro and I don’t wanna miss out on important content, I chose to have the cgs be hidden during torture scenes while the text and audio is still there. Maybe not having the violent cgs accompanying the descriptive dialogue and eerily realistic audio will make it more bearable for me.

The only gore VN that I played was Kara no Shoujo which was more of a detective story was already brutal enough for me and listening to Syd describing the VN that she played makes me realize that I played the most tame of them all. I do recommend Kara no Shoujo if you can stomach a few gore scenes since they are nowhere near as horrible as in these VN's and the story is amazing. It is not an eroge, at least I think it's not, since there is not a lot of sex (I almost don't recall any being in there) but I still recommend it if you like a good detective/horror story.
