Double meaning of the title "Sousou no Frieren" Misc. Since the anime just recalled the title of the show with episode 08, I will try to explain to people who may not be familiar with Japanese why it is such a big deal, just a little FYI if anyone's interested. The Japanese title for this show is "Sousou no Frieren" which is also the title of episode 08. As you can see there is a short description "Sousou no" in front of our protagonist's name. Sousou (葬送) is a word that is formed by combining 2 characters each with their own meaning, 葬 "to bury" and 送 "to send off". Usually, the word has a sad and grieving nuance, but in some contexts, it also means "to kill/to end". At first, most people assumed that the title is like that because Frieren outlives all her friends, so she "sees them off" one by one. But at this point in the story, the demon reveals that it is actually a title given to her by demons because she has "sent so many demons to their deaths". People were SHOOK when this double meaning was revealed in the manga, it was just so cool lol I saw that English subtitles translated it into "Frieren the slayer", while still badass, it just doesn't fully show how the author played with words in the title, and I just think it's a pity that some people will not be able to appreciate it due to stuff lost in translation. IMO experiencing the realization that the title was not as simple as I thought was one of the highlights when reading the manga. But translation is hard, I totally get that. I'm assuming a lot of people already know this, but just in case, I wanted to create this post, because I really love this show and I'm so happy that the anime is getting so much attention. "Shook"? Not really, because 葬送 in itself, in dictionary, if you see this 2 words in any other writing, it literally means "killing off". If someone who never watched Frieren but knows Kanji, just by reading the title "葬送の芙莉莲" they will think it means “Frieren the Slayer” hence when this episode happened, everyone who knows kanji feels "yeah, sounds about right" rather than "shook". There is nothing to be "shook" here, it literally does mean that. In kanji, we can switch the word around 葬送 vs 送葬 and it will mean different things. 送葬 by itself, in dictionary, in any other writing, it means “sending off the dead” like literally it means the process of carrying the casket to the grave site and bury the casket. This can be viewed as Frieren is bidding goodbyes to her dead comrades, to time, to people she met in her life, as she outlives them. 葬送 means killing off, 送葬 means sending off. They are similar words but meaning is very different. Whilst you are not wrong in saying that 葬送の芙莉莲 is a wordplay by the author, definitely intentional, and this episode was a cool name drop, but no one who knows kanji was "shook" bro.

once thing, i feel i need to clarify. The demon girl didn't act for revenge or even any kind of negative emotions towards the humans. She was totally emotionless and her actions were purely utilitarian.Because demons lack emotions, she just killed the girl father, so she didn't have a parent any-more, which would "free" her to be given to the other woman, which little girl she ate as a replacement. Demons in this world are screw up, not because they are evil. which you can argue they are not but because they lack any kind of emotion, good or bad. Hence why Frieren calls them beast capable of speech.

If Frieren knew that guy enough to remember him decades later after she almost had him at her mercy, she'd have killed him back then or said something now. He was just one demon amongst dozens or hundreds, that was lucky enough to survive due to the chaos of the battle.

I LOVE how she just wiped him out. I love Himmel, but I caaaant stand when characters try to do the nice thing to bad people who are clearly lying/manipulating them and ot costs them injuries or someone else their lives.

notably when frieren kills dhrat, she says "one down" but says ippiki in japanese. japanese uses different terms to count depending on the thing being counted. in this case, ippiki is how youd count small animals. think pests or rodents. counting larger animals or more significant life uses different terms. its super disrespect
