I started saving coins a bit over two months ago and it's definitely fun and addictive. In my case, it's not just pennies, but also nickels, dimes, and quarters. I've been very strategic about how I accumulate them and I roll them each week to keep better track of the progress, and thus far I've been averaging almost $3 a day. At this rate I hope to break $1,000 by the end of the year. If this guy wouldn't have focused only on pennies but also saved nickels, dimes, and quarters, he could've saved up $45,000+ over all those years.

My mother, who was born in 1927, and grew up during the depression, always picked up every single penny or coin she found. Till the week she died, last year. She would save the money and at the end of the year donate what she had found to a charity. In the days and weeks after her death, i began finding coins on the ground. Late one night within a few weeks of her death i was in a secluded parking lot at night. I had parked under a light pole, and upon return to my car right in front of the driver side door on the ground, was one of those new gold $1 coins. 😇

I was in a grocery store several years ago and watched an elderly man pull up in front of the store in a truck with the truck bed completely full of jugs filled with change. He had a couple of male employees unload them and they headed to the Coinstar machine. He said that when he bought the truck he was currently driving he started saving his change so that when it was time to get a new one he could pay for it with his change. Well apparently he new exactly how much he had because he said he had enough to buy one off the showroom floor. I was going to stick around to see how much he ended up with but he had drawn quite a crowd and management of the store was trying to contact their corporate office because they had to pay this out and nobody was sure how much change the coin star machine would accept.

Most pennies up until sometime 1983 were 95% copper the rest zinc but still Illegal to melt for profit. Its still more profitable in its current state knowing the amount of copper content per year of minting, currently a 95% copper penny is worth three times face value. In the 1970's my mom was a teller at a bank. An old man came in with a bag of rolled coins and opened a savings account. Later that day she needed some quarters so she took one of the old man's rolls and broke it open. It was all silver quarters! She checked the rest of the coins: Nearly everything was silver, pre-1964. She bought the entire bag from the bank at face value and took it home. There was a lot of silver, most of it very well worn but a few were in good enough condition to be of interest to collectors. As I recall, it was a few hundred dollars face value and we sold it for over $1,000. Side note: In the days when coins were silver, it was common to see coins in circulation from 50-100 years. Some of the coins were from the late 1800's but most were from the early 1900's.

My wife’s dad was a truck driver when he got out of the army after World War II. He got into the habit of saving silver dollars. My wife when she was a little girl in the early 1960s, remember going to buy a brand new Ford falcon with her daddy, and he paid for the car with silver dollars. my wife’s dad would empty his pockets and give the coins to my wife when she was four years old until she was in second grade in 1962, at which time they went to the local bank and started a savings account for her. That’s where all of her money went after 1962.. but she had two banks that were for coins that daddy gave her when he came home from work every day starting when she was four years old, one bank was for the pennies, the other bank was for the other coins that were in daddy‘s pockets every day. Those banks were both filled before 1963.. her mother took those completely filled banks and put them up in the crawlspace/attic. My wife forgot all about those banks until her parents were both gone and she had to prepare their house to sell. as she was going through the attic she found the two bags inside of a small trunk. I have been bugging my wife to let me catalog the coins and those two banks, the banks are a little larger than a football each. I’ve never seen them, but my wife has pointed out the bank she has when we saw one at a flea market one day.. my wife will not let me get the coins out of the bank and catalog them. She is afraid I will break the banks trying to get the coins out. I told her when I was a little kid, I was able to get coins out of my piggy banks using a butter knife and turning the bank upside down. It takes a long time, you might get two or three coins per minute, but I was always able to do it without breaking my banks.. my mother owned a small tavern slash shot and a beer place with a pool table, pinball machines, and a jukebox. It was a friendly neighborhood place that you could only get to buy driving, unless you lived right down the road. She encouraged her customers to bring her their pennies. My mom save them in gallon wine bottles. I think each jug held something like $70 worth of pennies, she gave one to my wife as a birthday present one time, and my wife cash them in at the bank. I think that’s how much was in there.. I think my mom had something like 30 completely filled Mogan David gallon milk bottles filled with pennies in her garage. She ended up just giving them away to her nieces and nephews and people as gifts on their birthday and things like that I myself started a compulsive hobby of saving every coin I ever found starting at 1977 when I was first hired by the company I just retired from. I was a meter reader, walking about five hours a day rain snow heat below zero, 95°, it didn’t matter. We did not have a Weather clause, keeping us from going out in bad weather like the lineman had. They didn’t have to go out in temperature is below 15°, or in the rain unless it was an emergency. but the meter readers did.. The best place for me to find coins I learned while reading meters was in shopping mall parking lots in the area they would push the snow when clearing the parking lots in winter.. I would make it a point to always cruise over to the area they would push the snow way out of the way when the snow would start to melt. There was one day I found over six dollars in coins, I would always find at least two dollars when the winter snows melted in those parking lots. I have every coin I have ever found since 1977 in three banks. I always do this day when I find A coin, it goes in my right rear pocket, and then into my banks. Since I only started at 1977, there are very few silver coins. I’m guessing I have about 40 pounds of coins in those three banks. I also have $87 in cash that I found.. One of them is a $20 bill, one of them is a five dollar silver certificate.. when my wife and I were dating, she worked in the downtown headquarters of a bank in the trust department. Every payday, I had her bring me 10 silver dollars, that was over a three-year period. That was between 1974 and 1978 when we got married. I have everyone of those coins in a large basketball size the bank..All of those silver dollars are the large Eisenhower coins I think they are.. i’m not really into coins.. but I do know that people just don’t carry change anymore with debit cards and credit cards for everything. I don’t even find that many coins in the snow dump areas of parking lots anymore. I don’t even carry change in my pockets anymore. I give my wife all the money, as I have been doing since 1973, except for the coins I have found.. The only problem with giving my wife all the money is, when I ask her for money like 20 bucks for a haircut, she always asks me what I want it for to this day.. if I tell her I need it for something like a new motorcycle helmet, or I want to buy a new guitar, she will tell me I already have too many helmets, and way to many guitars, and she won’t give me the money. She tells me to sell a few of my guitars or one of my motorcycles if I need money for another one. How did I ever allow this to happen..

John Manrow Steel pennies were made in 1943 since copper wad needed for the war. They aren't that valuable, and are only worth a few cents in average condition. Some 1943 copper pennies however were made on accident and are considered extremely rare error coins. They go for 50k-1.8M depending on grade. Less than 10 of them were found and there may possibly be a few left out there. The problem with 1943 pennnies (and any other valueble coin) is that there are countless fakes out there meant to deceive people, making it very hard for you to find a legitimate one.

It took a month! They offered him $5 thousand dollars just for the silver! He got another 10 grand for the regular stuff. Total was $15 grand. He wanted to bury another barrel but his family said no! I was there the day they used a back hoe to dig up the barrel. They used wheelbarrows and loaded the coins into plastic totes.

Some of those pennies probably were worth more depending on mint value.

PEMG AUTO AVENUE pennies just sent worth what they used to be I had a 1910 penny one of my mom friends granddaughter had I paid her a quarter for it lol and i got it appraised and it was worth 10cents

Most of those pennies were people 1982 pennies. The copper value would've been worth more. If he used that money towards mutual funds instead or even CD's? The interest alone would've be insane. A millionaire he would be.

In 1971 a senior gentleman came into the bank I worked for and on three SEPARATE occasions within a year cashed in $6,000 worth of change each time. 6K in 1971 money is equivalent to 40K in 2020 money

Money went for an expensive dental treatment. Folks, many dentists are no more than crooks. Had a 67 year old friend had an estimate for 32 k for work. He kept looking and getting other opinions and estimates, price at another dentist was 22k, another 8k. Finally went to one who told him that you didn't need all his molars (you can do just fine with 4) and didn't need other things the rip off quacks told him he needed. His final bill at this dentist, $1700.00. A year later he is doing just fine. Just because they are doctors don't mean they're not crooks. Keep that in mind when looking for dental work.

i had a dentist who would not clean my teeth unless I had a new set of X rays. He had the nerve to say "by law' you need to have x rays every year. I told him where to go in front of everyone and quit him and got a new dentist.

Thanks for pointing out the positive this man received from his $5000 rather than make fun of him as others have. I owe $10,000 for subpar dental work and would be happy to get $5000 to pay towards it, especially in my mid seventies.

He gave away way more that $5,000 worth of pennies all the pennies before 1982 are worth way more they are pure copper. Plus some where probably rare double stamped or metal pennies also.
@BigJay7736 жыл бұрын
Exactly....I was just about to make the same comment.....in reality he probably could've had at least about 30K if he went to a coin dealer etc
@christschool6 жыл бұрын
Very very unlikely he had any double stamped pennies, even in this large of a collection.
@iammisscrystal6 жыл бұрын
yes, he gave away hundreds of thousands worth of pennies. if not, MILLIONS!

Me and my daughters collect coins every year.... In which coins of 1,2 & 5 rupees are included.... And every year when my daughter promoted to next level in school we spend this amount to buy her lunch box, water bottle or stationary .... And as a Recycler I never bought her a money box.... We collected money in a milk carton or an empty plastic bottle (like Coca-Cola)
