The younger generation of men does need to learn self defense mostly because of bullying that has started to rise in recent years as children are made to be weak by social media. I remember when I used to be weak and got bullied but one day I decided to learn how to box, that might have been my best decision at that age.
@Aristomenis93
@Aristomenis93 11 ай бұрын
That’s very true, social media has exacerbated the extremes of society, largely due to it’s sheer speed of information distribution. It opens up kids to bullying and allows cowards to hide behind a screen. Learning self defense is one way to increase confidence and reduce the chance of being physically bullied at the same time. Thanks for taking the time to share your story, glad the video resonated with you.

BJJ is my passion, but boxing is where I purge my demons out 2x week, I don't spar anymore but the workout alone causes me to burn a 1000 calories during a 1 hour session. I started doing Muay Thai about 7mo ago. Learning how to defend myself has always been on my bucket list because I feel it's a part to becoming the best possible version of myself. Even though I am still quite insecure and retract in sparring and as a whole, I can tell it has started to make a difference. It might be minute for now, but knowing deep down that you can defend yourself removes one of the biggest fears in humans, which is our physical safety. It's truly something!

Totally agree with you. Started training Muay Thai/Kickboxing back in 2016 as a hobby. Stuck to it ever since and it was one of the best decisions I did in my life. The most important lesson it taught me is humbleness, humbleness and humbleness. There are tons of guys who are better than me and can kick my ass on any day, so once the ego is confronted with this harsh reality, it is much easier to keep it in check and grow and mature mentally as a man. It has also taught me compassion towards the less skilled guys, beginners and whatnot... Always trying to help them when training and adjust the style to their skill level. Last but not least it has taught me that it is pretty easy to hurt someone, if you already possess some level of skill, or get hurt if you get caught with that right punch or move. Hence I deliberately avoid any confrontation out on the street or anywhere else outside of the gym, unless it is absolutely necessary to protect life or health of myself or people close to me. I would recommend any man to take up a combat sport, it will do him good on so many levels that a person who never tried it can't comprehend. Stay strong and train hard guys! ❤️‍🔥💪

Mate, you look so good for only 18 months training. I'm 50 now but trained pro boxing and kick boxing from aged 8 until my late 30's and my take from it all is the incredible discipline to learn something that's so physically AND mentally demanding. It translates over into everything in life. It's nice knowing you can handle yourself, 99% of blokes haven't got a clue how to fight, but best to try and avoid confrontation at all costs cuz terrible things can happen (to them and you) 👍👍👍

Absolutely right! Ever since I joined my local boxing gym 6 months ago everything in my life has changed. I am more confident, i DO walk taller, I feel better looking at myself in the mirror (and not only in the physical sense, spiritual too), in general my level of self worth skyrocketed but I also learnt to be humble at the same time and respect those who respect me back. I believe martial arts have a special effects in a mans brain, since part of our instincts is fighting. 99% of people do not practice martial arts and I believe that could make them feel like less of a man in some way or another. So anyone who can, definitely give it a try, you will not be disappointed!

I went to a Taekwondo academy about 3 years ago. I just went there because I was recommended to join it by my parents. I did Taekwondo for almost 3 months and left without participating in the belt test because my father got covid. I didn't go to a martial arts gym afterwards, but I totally agree that the anxiety and depression part in me was fully eradicated. Respect from peers or not, my inner self just felt unusually easy. Compared to that, I joined a regular workout gym some weeks ago, and I've noticed that there was a lot of difference between my confidence and determination at the time while I was doing Taekwondo versus now. Whoever reads this, I would recommend them highly to get the self defense skills first rather than just striving for being muscular and beefy.

I have never in my life been more in "Teacher mode" than when I'm working with brand new students or trial-classers. I love it so much! Showing them how to throw a kick. Adjusting their form. Showing them how you might work it into a combo. The concepts of when it would be safe to throw and what kind of position it leaves you in. And seeing them FINALLY understand the technique. I love every moment of it and I wouldn't have a way to experience that without my Thai gym. And on top of that, I get to sneak away with better technique having thought of and explained it to someone who had no idea at first. Iron sharpens iron, friends. Train hard. Never quit.

More (if not all) females should be doing this. That said, NEVER let your new-found abilities lull you into overconfidence. In most scenarios you can still be at a disadvantage compared to many men who, even untrained, can take and dish out more punishment. Always avoid conflict when you can. Leverage surprise when you have to. And when there is no other option FIGHT LIKE HELL.

One thing that stood out to me when you mentioned self improvement content was early on in my journey, when we were drilling takedowns, my sparring partner twisted his knee really badly. It freaked me the hell out and I almost quit over it. My coach pulled me aside and said it’s not a case of ‘if’ someone gets hurt, but ‘when’. Train safely, and be kind. My personal experience as a young man that did martial arts when I was 7-10, competed in nationals for Karate and then had to stop cuz of moving schools. I finally got back into it 9 months ago, I can say that even just being in the gym once a week, it feels great to have the confidence that I am okay in a situation I before wouldn't be. I am a pretty short and light guy that got picked on quite a bit growing up when I was fat and for that reason I found it tough to feel secure in a crowd or just around people in general thus leading to playing games all my teenage years. I am now 20 and I've learnt alot through the last 9 months of training that I have matured enough to get a job, get a social life and start enjoying life again. I love martial arts, not for the fighting but for both the strategy and the understanding that only hard work can get you where you want to be. It just makes you a better person and I believe that if everyone learnt it growing up there'd be less confrontations in this world.

Been obsessed with combat sports in general since 6 years. But I've been doing some way earlier as I've been forced by my dad to start boxing around 12, which was a huge help in general and I can't thank him enough. Then I wrestled for a while and now i'm back to boxing since something like 18 months at the age of 21. When you train in a consistent and serious way, boxing becomes truly is a sport that feels different than others. That feeling when you get on the ring, the stress when you're in a bad position and you know that you have to adapt to be in a better position, the humbling, the relief and pride (still in a humble way aha) when you finished a session you never thought you could finish, theses are things you won't see anywhere else. All these things that seem negative are so strengthening, as Tony Ferguson says, pain is the realest feeling you can get. I apologize for writing that much but I could talk during hours about it.

You did an excellent job verbalizing the experience of training martial arts/learning how to fight. I struggle to explain to people how it changes you and makes you not want to fight but at the same time knowing that you can. I’ve had times where guys would try to act tough, if anything training makes me less uptight and less stressed out. They would try to start stuff with me but I just couldn’t take them seriously knowing in my mind what I could do to them lol been training jiu jitsu since 2019 and just started boxing, best decision I’ve ever made!

Agree 100% - i'm a year into my kickboxing journey now and remember how terrifying it was first walking into the the gym and seeing all these guys battering the bags before the class started. Now a year later thats me and on Friday night i'll be going for my Green Belt. I'm still very much a beginner obviously, but can hold my own in sparring and crucially am able to think my way through rounds as opposed to just try and not get hit! It has been huge for me too in terms of mental health / social anxiety, completely agree that just knowing that you can defend yourself against the average Joe on the street has a big knock on effect to your day to day interactions. Should add that i'm 42 years old at this point - if there's any older guys thinking of training but worried about your age, dont!

Working out and doing martial arts every day has changed my mental and physical state for the better and honestly, I can’t believe how much everything you said has happened to me as well, like fight club said, you start scanning the horizon around you , waiting, almost wanting somebody to say something off to you or look at you the wrong way, or get too close or touch you, because that is what happens when you get tougher, it just happens until it becomes instinctual

I've started kickboxing about 1 year ago. After about 8 months I felt I wasn't improving, kept getting beat up in sparring sessions, and was close to giving up. But I stuck with it and noticed some improvements recently where I'm happy with the recent sparring sessions. It has worked wonders for my physical and mental health and I plan on sticking with it. Sometimes, I'm not in the mood but I force myself to go, a few minutes after the training starts I get in the mood and I forget all my problems, I'm in the zone and it feels awesome! After the training is done I feel 10x times better than before, it is worth it, all men should practice combat sports, it's life changing!

I've been doing Muay Thai for nearly 2 months, for 5-6 times a week... Yeah, this is quite a drastic move for me after about 3 whole years of inactivity, sitting at home and basically doing nothing and being depressed. The pandemic really tore down my mental well-being especially with some family disagreements recently. My social life was a wreck. But MT training was a God-sent for me, although it's only been about 2 months. I'm starting to see myself in a more confident manner, physically and mentally. I don't feel terrible anymore because I won't be sitting at home all day, wasting away my life. I get to interact with others who share the same interests in improving themselves. Overall, easily the best decision of my life to get into combat sports.

Glad to know of your perspective, with which I agree! I've been working out for about 15 years now, but not gotten any regular and formal martial arts training. Now it's been 6 months I've been going to boxing classes twice a week, and these days I've been also putting in an extra hour of bag work. I'm starting to feel more confident that I'm not easy to mess with, given my physical strength combined with some boxing abilities (very very novice, yet not non-existent), but I feel like I've a lost a bit of muscle mass that I used to have , since my workout has been divided into weightlifting and boxing, instead of just weightlifting. Anyway, I'm learning to like the new me :) Thanks again for the video!

as a introductory boxer (about 2 months now), i can agree with almost everything you have said, it indeed changes your life in some speical way. its not like simply getting muscular, where sure, you look better, it hits a kind of deeper feeling; you *know* you dont have to worry about anything along those lines anymore, because the worst case scenario is not the worst anymore. and the respect is a big thing too, because as said, the respect for being a fighter, is so diffrent that the respect you get of simply being muscular, i dont know why the respect is so much greater, but it really feels good obtaining it.

Having been someone who spent my early 20's wanting to learn to box, knowing that sparring would drill out of me any fears of being hit or, equally, hitting someone, as well as handling any situation in life, not purely just physical confrontation, I can say that my thoughts were 111% justified, looking back, post training and sparring. It, in my opinion, should be mandatory by law for children to go to a martial arts club, based on assessments made regarding the club's suitability. Help children (and upwards) to handle adrenaline, to know they're not fragile and that words, let alone physical violence, shouldn't fold them in two (short of extremes like being attacked with a weapon, sucker punched or attacked by a group, of course), to learn discipline.

It's always been my side passion outside of my main career for many of the reasons you said. I took on two large human traffickers in Austin TX who were trying to kidnap my female friends until I intervened. They were each 6'1 - 6'2 and 220+ lbs. I'm 5'7 and a muscular 165 (same build as Alexander Volkanovski). I easily dispatched the first guy with hands and took the second guy down and put him to sleep. The whole fight was over in 15 seconds. I got my brother and dad into jiu jitsu, it changed their lives too. Every man should train some form of martial arts and for life.

Knowing you have the power but not using it until you need to is a great thing for a man to know or Being a soldier in a garden is better than being a gardener in war. Boys and men need to physically test each other, in sports, to learn that they have limits and what those limits are. It teaches them they are mortal and can't fight like 20 people and how to control themselves when sparring or what not with a newbie. Great video. Super balanced conversation. Martial arts is a sick hobby and a must for confidence, mental health and pushing your limits. I've had a few pro muay-thai bouts so far and it absolutely changed my life confidence and happiness wise. Though I do think it's absolutely useless for self-defence as the only times you'd get into a fist fight would be at a club. If someone tries to rob you or really hurt you they will use a knife or a gun, so all the martial arts training doesn't matter. The only true way to protect yourself and loved ones is to make more $ to live in safer places and hire security. I just wish all the red-pillers would stop gloryfying fighting and violence. Most guys nowdays hit the boxing gym for 3 months and then starting acting like supreme alphas, despite never even being in an actual fight.

I agree with various points you’ve made here. I tried my best to highlight the fact that a street fight is a completely different scenario due to the variables such as weapons, multiple attackers, concrete floor, etc. Very good point that you made here “the only true way to protect yourself and loved ones is to make more $ to live in safer places and hire security”. That’s very true. I’m not glorifying violence itself, simply highlighting that it’s increased my self-confidence and hopefully for others it has the same positive effect.
