The ref absolutely made the right call on that Saka pen. These are the kind of decisions that would help reduce the rate of flopping in the box, especially when players already have good open play chances anyways, and encourage them to be confident enough to stay up and take their chances, producing better moments. Reminds me of that frustrating Diogo Jota dive against Newcastle earlier this season when he easily got past the keeper 1v1 and still dived after a beautifully weighted trivela pass from McAllister to put him through; that would’ve been a beautiful assist.

Yes Saka has put his right out out slightly to initiate contact, but Neuer also pushes his right leg forward and in my opinion makes a challenge without winning the ball. There would still be contact even if Saka doesn't push his leg out as far. Saka tried to get a penalty, but Neuer also commits a foul so I think it has to be given. Especially if the Harvey Elliot penalty is given.

N.B not a foul from Saka for kicking Neuer. Neuer was close enough to Saka that feasible contact still would have been made, and at that pace, any contact is enough to bring a player down, even if Saka make sure there was heavier contact by leaving his leg in further

you can actually see Neuer extending his leg in the last possible moment. He stops his movement, then very subtly puts his foot just a little bit more upwards. If he doesnt do that, then saka doesn't catch it. Watching it in slowmotion actually gives you an erronious picture of what is happening. It gives the erronious impression that there was time/ space to react. That last little extension of Neuers leg happened so fast that Saka simply did not have the time or space to avoid it. Before the leg extension Saka was obviously trying to jump over Neuers lower body and extended right leg and reconnect with the ball. That last motion of Neuers leg makes that impossible. I've watched this a hundred times over, and i just can't see how this is not a penalty. The movements of his legs are also perfectly natural for a person changing directoin at high speed. your legs split apart naturaly split apart as you do it with the ball at your feet.

Thank you. I've been saying for years that the only way to stop all this nonsense is to just start coming out with red cards for things like simulation. And because it's a red card possibility, that means that VAR can be involved, so it can be reviewed from all the different camera angles. And if someone is found to be doing excessive buffoonery, it's a red. It's just so good to hear someone else actually say it for once. Unfortunately, Saka looks like he's trying to James Harden his way into a foul call, which I also can't stand.

To add to the red card, suspensions of a minimum of 5 matches for a first offence, 10 for a second etc will wipe this nonsense off the football map. Retrospective punishments will pretty much ensure that these cheats will get the punishment they fully deserve. Can't come soon enough for me.

I dont see this incident the same. B did a 70 degree turn left with momentum heading forward naturally at this point it is hard to 'get skinny' as you put it. When he is tripped, he is looking at the ball. indicating intent to continue. neuer makes a significant movement with right leg just before the contact that you seem to have ignored. Neuer himself surely should also 'get skinny' to avoid any sort of contact. Yellow cards should be for diving when there is zero contact only as otherwise the level of subjectivity is too high to punish.

10:52 "Where in God's green earth is Jamie Vardy's left leg supposed to go in this situation?!" I dunno chief... towards the ball? Look at the direction he kicked the ball, and the direction his leg moves. It's almost perpendicular. If Monreal wasn't there, that ball is going out for a goal kick. It's almost out of play by the time Vardy goes to ground. He's not getting it no matter what. But then, he was never trying to - he was playing for the penalty BEFORE he knocked it past Monreal. THAT'S the real reason why his trajectory "naturally" carries him towards the defender, and probably the reason the knock-on was hard enough to make sure it did as well. Because - and you made this point yourself - elite professionals have trained in doing everything they can to win the spot kick. The action to draw the foul starts before he knocks it past Monreal, and it continues with the comical motion his arms make, swimming in the air to performatively say "Oh, look how I'm moving in this direction, this is totally something I can do nothing about!" It IS clever, as the tweet says. It worked on the referee, and it worked on you. This is a rare occasion where I really think you've missed the mark, but at least in doing so you exemplified the great point you made earlier in the video. The reason Saka didn't get away with it is because his trailing leg was more obvious. That's it. It's definitely not a race thing. It's just become a skill. Vardy, Kane and friends have become very good at this skill, and Saka is not. The funniest thing is in both that game and the Bayern game on Tuesday, Monreal and Neuer's leg is unnaturally extended beyond their position in basically the same way (and pundits at the time said the penalty was Monreal's fault thanks to this). That's just a good coincidence (or a good choice by the quote tweeter), as there are other good examples where this doesn't happen. Bernardo Silva got a penalty against Arsenal in early 2022 where his movement looks VERY natural, but if you compare his positions between knocking the ball on and when the contact happens, he managed to move his whole body two widths SIDEWAYS to initiate the contact! On close inspection it's MUCH worse than what Saka did on Tuesday, but it LOOKED so convincing he got the penalty and because of it City won that game. Anyone who calls this behaviour cheating or diving is only saying that Saka is LESS of a cheat than their favourite players because Saka didn't have the experience - and didn't practise enough ahead of time - to get away with it. That's all. People are allowed to dislike players doing this. They're allowed to think it's okay because it's elite level sport and everyone does it. But the one thing people shouldn't be doing - and yet, are - is criticising players for trying it and praising players for being good at it. That IS hypocrisy, plain and simple. It's surely factional rather than race - if it were Salah the Liverpool fans would defend it to the death, but since it's Saka they're all over it. City fans would (and do) defend Silva for doing it but would absolutely pile in on Smith Rowe were he to try - but it's still hypocrisy.

It's crazy to me that they stuck to their guns on the card waving and it worked, but they just don't employ the same strategy with anything else. With diving i feel like they tried to do this a few years ago and started giving yellows pretty regular, but then just stopped for some reason and just wave for the diver to get up instead of awarding a free kick and giving a card. My guess would be that they don't want to have to give a yellow for diving and then realise it wasn't a dive, it's easier, especially with VAR now to just wave the game on. If it's actually an offense, then VAR will bring it back for a pen, If it isn't then the games not really been affected.

I think there is one fundamental thing that many football fans do not get about refereeing. It is not meant to be consistent, at least not in the sense that most football fans mean when they say they want referees to be consistent. The referee is meant to interpret the rules as they pertain to each and every individual situation. Good referees do this well. No two situations are exactly the same and a good referee understands what the mitigating or aggravating factors are. Most football fans (in my experience) do not.

Fair enough if your wanting to hand out yellows and reds for that, but it damn sure has to be a red when Kane starts doing MMA as well then

I really think that flopping in the penalty box should be a red card offense. It’s literally the inverse equivalent of denying a clear goal scoring opportunity because you’re trying to give yourself a penalty kick goal. The only reason this might not be a good rule imo is if it makes the officials less likely to call simulation in the penalty box.

You know what I want instead? The post-match review of a flop/dive. If you are adjudged after viewing the replay again, and consultation with the official to sort of get any extenuating circumstances addressed, you hand out either a post-match yellow or red. That'll shut this down REAL quick.

Even though Saka's foul-drawing instincts let him down in this particular scoring opportunity, it's still probably worthwhile overall that he's spent so much focus on developing those instincts because they pay off in the long run.

exactly, we’re talking about the top scorer on a team that has been scoring for fun since the 2024 year started, i feel like drawing the foul felt like his last resort at the time due to the speed he was going at with that touch

Saka's touch wasn't bad, it was intentional so he could make his dive look better..... I hope UEFA bans him from the return leg, dangerous play(he actually kicks Neuer on the inside of his knee) and a dive. Zealand is in the right, a dive for a pen should count as high as an outfielder saving a goal with his hand.

Please!!! The red card idea for players feigning injury. It must be done now. I hate that they do this, it ruins games. At least if you are injured enough to be rolling around on the floor you should leave the pitch and get "treated" for 5-10 minutes.
