I really appreciate you posting this. I'm working in Hildale and the first thing I noticed that was worth seeing was the flag on top of El Cap! I would also like to express my appreciation to the Barlows for the great work they did in getting Old Glory flring so high and beautiful. It gives me great pleasure to know there are true Patriots in the area. You have my respect.

OK, so I tried this hike a second time two weeks ago with less wind and snow. Made the saddle in about an hour and a half this time. We got on top and then the trip to the flag is pretty easy. The flag was wrapped around the pole about 5 times so when the wind died down for a minute, I unfurled it so it could fly in all its glory. Really appreciate the men who put that flag up there, and you for putting the video up. I would call this a strenuous hike. Beautiful views.

I went up this trail today. It is indeed a beast and the wind was beating on me the whole way. I made it to the saddle and there was more ice/snow in the chimney than I was comfortable with so I didn't top out. I was whipped anyway. Talk about a lot of loose sand. Took me three hours to make the saddle.

Biggest issue with the hike is the endurance test on the sand hill.

This route reminds me of Kinesava East Face in Zion National Park, except for the sand (on Kinesava it's dirt) and the rock scrambling is much more challenging on Kinesava. All in all a better day out on Kinesava by comparison. Now on to a much more serious issue. The Canaan Mountains can be a very dangerous place for the unprepared. The route finding can be very challenging, and the massive - and numerous - cliff faces can land one in trouble with a misstep or two. In the process of trying to figure out where this hike is located, I found a route in Water Canyon that greatly resembles the actual route description in this video. Problem is that the top of this other "Sand Hill" leads to some very hard class 5 stuff. The actual route to El Cap is just northwest of Maxwell Park at UTM 12 S 323483 m E 4099804 N according to Google Earth and my GPS. Again, knowing where one is going and what one is getting into in the Canaan Mountains can be the difference between a great day out or a trip to the emergency room courtesy of Search & Rescue ... or worse. By the way, the link to mapmyhike doesn't work on my machine.

@@skiutah48I appreciate the time and effort you take in posting your videos. Very well done!! If you are interested, I can recommend some really off the beaten track scrambling adventures in Southwestern Utah. They'd make great videos, especially some 45 degree sandstone ridges (around 800 vertical feet) next to Snow Canyon State Park.

@0:50 notice how fast one gets winded on that first part called "Sand Hill". It happens to all of us. This is a 2 - 3-hour hike. Take water with you if you plan on going up, and hike as a team.
@skiutah485 жыл бұрын
That's excellent advice for this hike as the trail is more about knowing where to go than actually following a visable trail!
@halfstep843 жыл бұрын
Is the trail head up that route from Maxwell Canyon?
@VoxelJackal2 жыл бұрын
@@halfstep84 No, El Cap's sand hill is the trail head, it's not in a canyon, it's at the base of El Cap, there are a few dirt roads that lead you to it.
@halfstep842 жыл бұрын
@@VoxelJackal Thanks Kyle, so access through N Pinion St.?

@@halfstep84 pretty much yeah, you may need to park before the roads get too dicey and walk if your car is low clearance

This looks like a completely different level. Much like the cables at half dome. The lack of safety is cool, but this is on that level where its getting dangerous. If you're down for this then the next step is those walks on the worlds most dangerous path in china I believe.

Odd that a State that elects people like Pelosi, Newsom, Harris, and Schiff, even flies the flag of the US.
