I haven't seen this movie since I was four years old when it randomly came on the Disney Channel. I wonder how 4-year-old me would feel if he knew the next time I saw it would be 18 years later via Jarvis cosplaying the house in a "KZbin" thumbnail.

Okay, just gloss over the fact that while she was turning herself into a tornado ready to put on the moniker of Murder House, she was singing the lullaby that their dead mom used to sing to them. That was the creepiest part of that whole scene and really brought it into black mirror territory.

I left with my family _without_ her because I had to be at the stadium for graduation earlier than she did to watch it so she wasn't ready in time despite my reminding her that we have a schedule to keep and I was incredibly annoyed about it.
@kiralonely1307

@@roselover411 With my mom, it's always either I'm a little slow cause I have ADHD, so I'm a little behind schedule but I'm doing my best to catch up, usually speeding through doing things, but I also have OCD and have to periodically pause to double check I have everything, partially also due to the forgetfulness I get from my ADHD. She sees that as super frustrating. It's either that or she's behind because she zoned out or is busy reading and it takes her forever to pull herself out of it, which I understand, but sometimes she's having a conversation and puts off leaving to finish it, or puts things on hold to finish a video or something and then when I'm late or slow, she complains I don't value her time enough. It's so frustrating. Like, I am really trying, dude. But if I get aggravated at her when she's slow, she immediately pulls a "you're slow all the time" or "I was BUSY" or some shit as an excuse. She ALWAYS has to be right, good, and the hero in the situation. It's really frustrating at times. She's had lectures about me not respecting her time enough like 20 times in the last 2 years, while having such a tendency to be late that she jokes she's on "Bryant time" which is my stepdad's last name, and now hers, which Bryant time was a joke before they got married or anything because he's often late to things and usually by the same amount each time. Like he's in his own timezone. It's to the point that when she says she'll pick me up at one, for example, I generally tell my grandma she'll be here at two. Like, it's that common. But no. *I'm* not respecting *her* time, and she's allowed to be slow and late when I have things on a very tight schedule. *She's* allowed to complain, but if I *dare* to, then it's so hypocritical.

@@kiralonely1307 I did the same thing with visiting my nana. I started telling mom we were meeting at 1 even though we were really meeting at 2 because it was a *surprise* if she ever turned up earlier than an hour late. Nowadays her boyfriend doesn't let that happen. He's got her on a time table and he will leave at the right time to arrive wherever he's supposed to be. Granted, I don't LIKE her boyfriend, but at least her punctuality has greatly improved.

Isn't that the premise of like 95% of all 90s comedy movies involving a family of any kind? So while this movie might stand out for child neglect now, having that as a title back when it was released, would not have helped it stand out from movies of the same genre at all.

honestly the scariest part of smarthouse is in the very end. in that last breakfast scene it's revealed that they restored pat to like, factory settings or whatever and then shut her down for breakfast. and then angie's pancakes have chocolate chips in them. and they're like "*i* didn't put those in there! what?? then *who did*???" and on a tiny screen ben sees pat's human face wink at him. this is supposed to be very charming and a nice thing to end the movie on, as if the house wasn't painstakingly reset from an abusive, authoritarian nightmare only to *turn itself back on*.

Based off your description, I think this movie is based off a few sci fi short stories. The first is "MUM", which is about a smart house that takes over the life of the lady who programmed it. If he’s far enough into the process to be actively trying to date again, he really has no good reason to act the way he does. I know it’s just a movie, but it’s not cool.

@@Damop17 lol no. You don't get to be a shitty parent just because you're sad. You get the fuck over it and take care of your children. Its ok to be sad and depressed and not take care of yourself or your house whenever you live on your own. @alygatorstereo
@alygatorstereo 3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree it’s messed up beyond belief, I see your point there. In a way, Ben was being influenced by his fathers views on gender roles so it’s completely believable in the sense that his character would believably do the thing. Ben’s dad raised him with his own ideals in mind like parents typically do. And who knows if Ben’s mother followed these gender stereotypes given that she married a man like him. Also, her and Ben clearly had some sort of close relationship meaning she was present enough to influence her son with her behavior while she was alive. Still, the movie was completely messed up. It was an original idea that could have made some interesting observations on stereotyping these two genders and their roles but instead was a train wreck of nightmare fuel & s*xism.

To be fair tho, he literally programmed her with what old sitcoms with tradwives to teach her what a “real mother” does and it ends up backfiring on him. Plus I think the house becoming more sentient and overprotective of Ben as if it were his mother isn’t that sexist imo, it’s really for the story’s “don’t overly rely on technology” and “you can’t replace family with technology” message. Idk just my interpretation

Don’t mean to sound combative, but I think there is a scarier Disney movie: The Black Hole (1979) This movie was Disney’s attempt to steal the thunder from Star Wars when it first came out. They tried to target a “more adult” audience space-themed fantasy movie and instead created a terrifying psycho-thriller. It’s not great but the third act does see the main villain go to hell sooooo I give it a Lobotomized Crew/ 10

Honestly, I don't remember this movie, but like Jarvis says it comments on some SUPER real topics Neglectful fathers, the eldest child having to be a 2nd parent, bullying, ignorance, the dangers of technology and probably more But rather than being a heartfelt movie that could've helped young kids suffering with those issues instead it's "beep boop misogyny and mass fear activate" I mean that in the nicest way possble, and I'm glad Jarvis helped us "younger folk" understand alot of the conext behind the movie

"It's Disney. Dead parents are kinda their thing." Did you know that when Walt Disney and his brother Roy became successful, they bought his parents a new house as a 50th anniversary gift. When they moved in, his mom started complaining about a 'strange smell' and Walt sent a repairman to find the issue, but he couldn't find anything. Soon after, Walt's mother died of asphyxiation due to a gas leak in the house... Walt felt horribly guilty for her death and an artists work reflects an artists feelings. It's theorized that that's why the parents were always dead in Disney movies. 😬 my guess is the plot point just carried on throughout all their content because of that (Edited to make the last 2 sentences theoretical rather than seem like a fact. Thank you C.Q Studios for helping me realize my mistake 😅)
@Dogman_35
@Dogman_35 3 жыл бұрын
That's actually really sad. And it's mostly because of a shitty repairman. Like... it's a gas leak, they really should have caught that. That's their job.

Actually dead parents are just a plot device to put the protagonist into a bad situation or to spur them into action. Parents were dead in Disney movies and in media in general long before Walt’s mother died

@Mega Fan 11 hmmm... not sure where you get the 'cultist' thing from. 🤔 He was certainly a very strict boss. He knew what he wanted, how to get there, and who could help him. But that's business, not relgion, so not really anything to do with cults. Also, I wasn't sure why a freemason was bad, so I looked it up and honestly still don't know. Something to do with religion I guess? But it appears Walt wasn't a freemason persay, he was part of a fraternal youth leadership organization which required belief in "a higher being", but no particular higher being, just A higher being. Also not sure why you imply Zionists and nationalists are bad (sorry if I'm misreading your tone), unless he was following a country with a man like Hitler in charge (but he very clearly wasn't and even made a lot of propaganda against the nazis)... In case your interested, here are the articles I refefenced: www.awn.com/animationworld/was-walt-disney-saint-evil-sinner-or-devil-incarnate-truth-about-some-those-nasty demolay.org/the-most-famous-demolay-of-all-walt-disney/ I'd like to see where you heard these rumors? I'm always curious when it comes to anything Disney and I really admire Walt (maybe a little too much), but I am willing to have an open mind if you have any evidence toward these claims ☺️ P.S. I don't know much about BATIM and don't care for it much myself (don't like horror lol), but as far as I'm aware while there have been many theories that it was based off Disney, it was never actually confirmed (again, could be wrong about this) I've also seen some theories that it's actually based off Disney's rival at the time "Fleisher Studios" who created "Bimbo the Dog" to compete with Mickey. But like all theories, it's exactly that. A theory. Not necessarily the truth. Again, source if your interested: www.google.com/amp/s/aminoapps.com/c/the-ink-machine/amp/blog/a-batim-theory-is-it-based-on-true-events/3WeR_WBNtBugWL4bJ6RnWMmKVLMmvRGEVW0

@@c.q.studios5437 That's true and I suppose there's no actual proof that he purposely (or even subconsciously) made the parents, particularly the mother, dead in his movies, but it is a suspiciously long list of protagonists with one or both parents dead compared to other franchises... And admittedly I might have thought of it as a fact because it is much more interesting to think about than just 'it's a plot device' lol Maybe not the greatest way to look at things

Thank you for saying this. Sooo many people say she died when they were kids. The reason parents were dead in later films such a Beauty and the Beast and Toy Story is because they were not necessary to the story and would only make the films more expensive to make.

So the Smart house potentially has an excessive amount of trash in it's walls and floors. The Smart house can also create food in its walls. Given how advanced the Smart house is, I don't think it's that far of a leap to say that the house can create food from the trash it had absorbed in it's walls.

Okay this show just reminds me of that story "The Veldt" by Ray Bradbury. Anyone read it in English class? It's basically a smart house, and then there's this nursery that has like cgi moving walls and sound. Skipping some stuff, the parents decide that the nursery is a bad influence on their kids so attempt to shut it off. The children, in fear of losing the nursery and the smart home altogether, lock the parents in the nursery with the veldt scene (like a savanna or grassland basically), as per the title. Turns out the nursery crosses into real life and the parents are brutally devoured by the lions of the veldt (akin to the zebra the lions were eating earlier in the story). Ray Bradbury is a great author.
