It's relevant that Akbar was considered a "good" Mughal emperor in the sense that he reduced taxes that were charged to non-Muslims, used politics to gain territory rather than solely relying on conquest (although trust that he did plenty of conquesting too), and generally seemed more accepting of people of various faiths. Most other Mughals - including Akbar's son - were not as tolerant. For example, any mythmaking around Aurangzeb would not go over nearly as well, considering how unfriendly he was to non-Muslims, even as he could be considered the emperor that brought the Mughals to their apex in terms of territory.

Wasn’t Akbar tolerant and progressive even compared to Rajputs of his time though?
@karankshah
@karankshah 2 күн бұрын
@@TheKaurK Akbar almost certainly was more tolerant; however, I don't think the Rajputs were ever even in consideration for educational children's TV. Just pointing out why Akbar might be better suited for children's comics/TV, not at all trying to imply he wasn't an outlier for the time.

@@karankshah oh of course yes! I think your comment just made a lightbulb go off in my head. All my life I have been hearing people compare Akbar just to other Mughal leaders, and I recently went to Rajasthan and learned a bunch more about Rajputs.. and then reading your comment just made that comparison pop into my head and I ended up mentioning it! That’s all!

Lamput is a very underrated Indian cartoon. Also Krish Trish and Baltiboy is my favourite, they tell the folk stories from all over india in a traditional folk art style (I don't know the name) that's very unique and different from any other Indian cartoon.

Yes, i used to love watching lamput so much. It's pretty good but not a lot of people know that it's an indian cartoon. KTB at least gets more attention which it deserves. Does anyone here knows about "bandbudh aur budbak"? I think it also has a pretty watercolor artstyle and this was also a big part of my childhood. Another cartoon Simple Samosa has different and new concept and good art too even tho i don't like the cartoon as the story isn't that interesting but still it's something different at least. I think the idea was better than the execution.

this version of akbar and birbal actually aired a lot earlier than 2014, in fact iirc it aired more than a decade before that, around 2003-4 (but i can't remember 100% when). my sister, cousin bro and i used to love this show. this show reminds me of another indian cartoon called The Adventures of Tenali Raman, which features another king and wise advisor duo. please try to watch that show if you can!

Ok im glad you said this because i DISTINCTLY REMEMBER ☝🏾☝🏾 watching this show in the early 2000s, so if this came out in 2003/2004 then that aligns with the time i lived in India...but i couldnt find any proof that this show was ever on air except for an article that said it was going to air on discovery kids in 2014, so i just assumed it was a Mandela effect sorta thing where i imagined watching a whole cartoon 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

6:00 it is lol. I remember crying while watching the old man suffer in the cold as a child. also, calling him brahmin may be a reference to his occupation (priests were called brahmins/pandits even though its more known as a caste now) instead of his caste because it would be really odd to mention caste in a cartoon made for kids. also, in the Hindi dub which I watched, they didn't mention dowry, they simply mentioned that he needed money for his daughter's marriage lol. regardless of that, the cartoon was in-fact too deep and heavy for children even though it meant to teach morals. one more similar cartoon I grew up watching was "Vikram and Vetal" which is very similar to this cartoon where Vikram is the ruler and Vetal is a ghost or a soul(?) who is his advisor. and all of "Little Krishna" cartoons (there's a lot of those lol), "Role no. 21" is also another cartoon based on mythology. My favorite Indian cartoon however is this one called "Krish, Trish and Baltiboy".

for me the most morally impactful episode was the one about the unlucky servant. The story goes this way - At Akbar's Palace there worked a man named Bhikhu. He was a gardener who worked with honesty but was unhappy because everyone around treated him badly. The reason was people believed that looking at his face will bring bad luck upon them. One day when Akbar woke up he asked for a glass of water but none of the servants came with water. Finally Bhikhu came with a glass of water. The emperor was disturbed to see his face at daybreak and when drank the water he brought his started to get painful stomach aches. He began to cry in pain and tossed himself out of the bed which ended up breaking his leg. The Palace guards arrested Bhikhu for bringing "bad luck" upon the emperor. Even with the broken leg Akbar decided to attend the royal court. When the court began his courtiers started to bring him bad news after bad news which only further spoiled the mood of the emperor. He began to blaim the poor Bhikhu for all this misfortune and at the advised of his courtiers decided to hang him! However, Akbar noticed that Birbal was unhappy with this decision and when asked the reason Birbal stepped down for Bhikhu. Setting aside all those superstitious beliefs Birbal derived logical possibilities for each and every misfortune and bad news of the day. For example the reason for his stomach ache could be because of the heavy dinner at yesterday night. Birbal then said these famous lines , " What was the crime of Bhikhu? He was only serving you by bringing water to you. When you saw his face, he also saw your face. If he is unlucky for you then for Bhikhu the real unlucky one is you your majesty! You are the emperor, you will continue to live but the he will be hanged for the crime for giving you water! Just what kind of justice is this your majesty?" After hearing all of this Akbar went through a change of heart. He thanked Birbal for removing the veil of superstition from his eyes and immediately freed Bhikhu from all blame. He also issued a royal decree which forbid anyone to call Bhikhu the "unlucky one" and those who do that would be punished severely. The episode ends with Bhikhu visiting Birbal's home to express his gratitude for removing the stigma from him and Birbal greeted him with a smile. Trust me guys, I was in tears 😢 after watching the episode. It touched my heart and realised me about how superstition can affect our lives. Truly this cartoon was one of kind. Miss those old golden days.

Growing up, we enjoyed Bengali cartoons like Thakumaar Jhuli, Nonte-Fonte, and Nut-Boltu. There is also a Bengali equivalent to Akbar-Birbal called 'Gopal Bhar,' which is just as whimsical. In this tale, Gopal serves as the court jester and advisor to King Krishnachandra, and they share a friendly bond. However, a jealous minister, who disapproves of their friendship, continuously tries to sabotage it but fails. To this day, I don't grasp why these cartoons are marketed to children, as their themes and storylines aren't truly child-friendly!

The moral of the video is "You can never glaze upper caste rajput/brahmin enough" The portrayal of akbar is in stark contrast to that of vikramaditya in vikram and vettal and even krishnadevaraya in tenali rama.

@@nav2417 who? Both the real and the ceremonial head of state are """"lower"""" caste lol. The last people who were in these roles weren't even Hindus lol. The only people who benefit from caste are those who avail reservations. Besides your original comment has no ground lol. Krishnadevaray has been portrayed like akbar in the adventures of tenali rama show, as in trying to unfairly punish people. Hell,the main villain of that show was another brahmin priest. Then there is the story of "Gopal Bhar" ,a bengali counterpart of Tenali Rama or Birbal and the king there was also portrayed like akbar here, hell he was portrayed to be incompetent more often. Vikramaditya is the only person who was portrayed vastly different in folk tales and shows, simply because he wasn't a king that ever had a close advisor or relied on his ministers, rather his own experience. Vikram and Betal isn't about Betal and Vikram being a counterpart to Birbal and Akbar respectively. Betal is a ghost that latched on to the neck of Vikramaditya and wants to kill him. He tells him a story (that is normally what an episode would be about) and then asks vikram the underlying motifs of the characters. If he answers correctly, he leaves him alive for the next story, and this is how the folk goes. That's why Vikramaditya is portrayed as highly talented and intelligent unlike other rulers.

You should check out 'Krish, Trish and Baltiboy' and the movie 'Arjun: the warrior prince'. Also, its a Japanese production, but the 1993 animated 'Ramayana: the legend of prince Rama' is a classic. It adapts the first 6 kands(parts) of Ramyana in short and leaves out the 7th, which is believed to be an interpolation by many academics and sampradayas.

I enjoyed this as a kid ; it used air in our country too. I remember watching this in Hindi/Urdu dubbing. But there's a reason why Akbar is shown to be filled with Hubiris. There's a reason why he addresses the the old man as a Brhamin(it reflects the makers adherence to the caste system). Many instances in this cartoon now would be considered as stereotypes and filled with prejudice and hate towards Muslims and the Mughal rulers of India. Despite this ,Akbar is considered as a "good" ruler in history, however he is caricaturized and shown to be an idiot.

I am not a Birbal fan. He’s been Unnecessarily made a hero. He threatens our Guru (Sikh) to stop preaching before he comes back or he will punish Guru ji when he comes back from his trip. GUESS WHAT!! He never came back and was KILLED… so much for being best minister.

Yes, this show and those stories were my childhood but you really put it into perspective, I have questions. Also, I was that person who bought wholesale the fact that Tenali Raman had a cat and people in Vijayanagara Kingdom spoke in an American accent.

No way Akbar was Birbal’s best bud though! Also, I used to watch Tenali Raman as well and it has the same King-Advisor dynamic except that the King is a bit of a himbo haha! I’d say the animation quality is better too and it’s a little less colorist than this one too and the designs are better!

There are very handful original Indian Cartoons that Were good. Since in India animation has no value and cost way too much with poor results. Even though Akbar Birbal is based on history but this one is one of the very few ones that were gold both enjoyed that could be enjoyed by kids and adults. Sadly never became that popular among many Akbar Birbal Stories or other popular mediocre Indian Cartoons. Speaking of Akbar Birbal The Big Magic Live-Action is Masterpiece though. As a Kid I forced myself to not like it since I loved the cartoon but in just few moments it became my most favourite. That is the only Series in India that is the most re-watchable of Every episode. It could have infinite epsiode and yet never got enough but it also got cancelled for the popular mediocre show that cancelled many underperformed great shows. Most of the great ones either got cancelled early or got ruined by unnecessary dragged episodes.

Original stories were based on Krishna Deva Raya of Vijayanagar empire and Tenali Ramakrishna the court Jester who saves the kingdom. Unfortunately, it's copy of fake stories Akbar and Birbal is more famous

Actually these kind of stories, like King - Witty minister relationship are kind of prevalent in different regions. In north, you have the Akbar Birbal stories, in south they have the Tenali Rama stories and here in Bengal, we have Gopal Bhar stories. So these are mostly regional based stories

India didn't have any concept of dowry until the British came. Before that, we had the parents of the girl give the girl money for her new life and family.
