When I went to Auto Shop in VOTECH school we were told and shown in manuals that the bearing used to disengage drive by applying pressure to the clutch pressure plate was called a “clutch release bearing”. Our instructor an old dirt track racer said most people refer to this bearing as a “throw out bearing” that pushed on the pressure plate so you could throw the car into neutral or another gear. I applaud your enthusiasm and energy. 🍺

One thing that I have learned is that any throw out bearing that comes with a clutch kit should be thrown away, never installed. They are always noisy from date of installation. I did an Auto to 5 speed conversion on my 1974 Mazda RX4. Auto could not handle upgraded 13b, neither could clutch plates. A factory release bearing should last as long as the gearbox.

I just finished a set of rear trailing arms with a disc brake conversion for a Syncro Vanagon. VW discontinued them ages ago, so JP-Dansk are the only new option, at $400 each (I've seen them priced over $500. The parts arrived, and I immediately got a cut on my hand unboxing them due to the razor-sharp edges around the perimeter. The paint was flaking off, and the welds on the shock mounts were sloppy and spattery. I put many hours and dollars into smoothing all of the sharp edges, adding TIG welds where needed, blasting to bare steel and applying 4 coats of paint. The brake calipers also had sharp edges that cut my skin upon unwrapping, and one of the banjo fitting seats had damage that would have made for a leaky connection. Because this damage was hidden by a rubber plug, I didn't discover it until I removed the plug to connect the banjo for final assembly. Because I already had hours into de-burring and painting the calipers, the vendor's weak offer that I could ship the caliper across the country for inspection and replacement wasn't worth the time and money penalty. I ended up having to fabricate a tool to resurface the fitting, so several hours of labor were needed to get aftermarket parts up to something resembling OEM quality.

I had to go to my local super expert machinists to get exactly the correct parts made, fabricated to replace crap afer market replacement stuff. Learned to not even hesitate to do this for farm and truck stuff. I mean some equipment was old, necessary but only occasionally used. Parts were sometimes scarce and expensive, more expensive than the machine shop. The machine shop also limited the downtime. Maybe this applies to your situation from time to time.

The term "throwout bearing" comes from the bearing's function of "throwing out" or disengaging the clutch when the clutch pedal is depressed. The bearing is designed to push or "throw out" the clutch release or pressure plate, which in turn releases the pressure on the clutch disc. This allows the clutch to disengage from the engine's flywheel, enabling the driver to shift gears without grinding or damaging the transmission. So, in short, the name "throwout bearing" comes from the action of "throwing out" the clutch when the driver presses the clutch pedal. Boom

I've had to put my car back together to then go and get the correct part. Make sure you give us your registration so we can confirm and give you the right part. I do that and the office staff still get it wrong because they aren't trained to confirm parts, just use a flawed computer system.

Aftermarket parts and getting the right parts in general can definitely be hit or miss. I spend so many hours researching individual parts, as I'm sure you do, just to try to find reviews and pictures and cross check with numerous websites to make sure it's actually correct. Even then dubious quality is an issue as you mentioned. One particular part I no longer recommend is AC Delco Silver rotors. Every time I bought them, it seemed like if the car sat for even a week or two they would rust over far worse than any other rotors and it would actually degrade the surface rather than just being cosmetic rust which wipes away with the first drive.

I live in Belgium and I own a 77 and a 91 GM truck, which were never dealersold in Europe, so I order all my parts from vendors in the USA. So even when I order parts from the same brands that supplied those parts to GM when those vehicles were built, I receive more then often parts, carrying that very same partnumber, manufactured in China an basically half the quality of the parts that were installed from factory. And in those listings from one of those vendors, that we all know probably know and buy parts from, you can even chose between various quality ranges and in the end the only thing that is different is the price...

My fun experiences with spare parts on a 2003 Mazda 6: The parts retailer listed a non-VVT cam drive chain kit as a 2.3 VVT part; the chain is of wrong pitch. The protective boots for front control arm joints dried and shattered and the joints rusted through not more than 18 months after complete overhaul. The left wheel bearing lasted about 20 000km. The front uprights apparently got redesigned after 2003, the press fit collar is more than a centimeter larger than the neck on the hub.

"I know this looks brand-new but it would be wasteful to _not_ replace it while I have the transmission out." I totally agree with your philosophy. We once had a Subaru wagon and it died right when our usual mechanic was on vacation. We thought it just needed a belt and took it to a different mechanic, who found there was more wrong, and had to pull the heads. When I got a message about that, I called so I could say "put new or rebuilt heads on it when you put it back together." With all the labor to take it apart and put it back together, my attitude is: update everything. The mechanic said "I looked at it and the heads looked pretty good so I already put it all back together." Argh. One year later, we got steam from the tailpipe. Cracked heads, water leak, we needed new heads. We got to pay for the labor twice! (I'm not really a car guy. I'm thinking they called it "the short block" that was pulled and a year later needed to be replaced.) The problem the first time was kind of unusual. The fastener securing the pulley on the crankshaft came off; the pulley stuck out past where it should have been, the force of the belt pulling on the pulley bent the shaft, and the pulley instead of spinning around in place was now banging against the soft aluminum of the case over the heads. So we needed a new case and a new pulley for sure, but the mechanic "helpfully" didn't put in new or rebuilt heads. With 20/20 hindsight I wish we had said "since this turned out to be a much more serious thing than we expected; no offense, but we prefer to have our usual mechanic do the work."
