Geddy's book includes an interesting discussion on how some people have taken the lyrics here out of context, as if they meant "I can be as selfish as I f***ing want to be." A perfect example of this came during the height of the pandemic, when he posted a picture on Instagram wearing a mask, and some anti-mask zealots threw the words "Free will" back at him, as if they gave them the right to ignore public health guidelines and endanger those around them, but as he said, "even the strongest individual must, to some extent, bow to the needs of a responsible society." As for recommendations of a drum solo, my favourite one is Leave That Thing Alone/The Rhythm Method from their 1997 Toronto show. Have a great day, and Rush on! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥

Those who hear a "celestial voice" are those who are religious. Neil's point is that he finds that a less reliable way of looking at reality and instead he chooses Free Will (i.e., he's a free thinker).
@AnthonyKellett3 ай бұрын
I think the key, to understanding this (or Neil's point), is to read the verses, with emphasis on, "There are those who think that..." These words are followed by a list of excuses, which people choose to believe to explain their poor situation or their actions. In short, I believe Neil is saying that you can believe in gods (not "God"), astrology, or any other predetermind outcome...but he's not having that. It seems he believes we have the freewill to determine our own outcomes. For the record, I agree.

This is how you react to rush, listen to the studio cut and follow it up with a live cut. Also, neil never writes "I'm an atheist and you should be too" he writes "you can be catholic, Jewish, Muslim, and that's OK by me, but I will choose freewill"

You have a choice of what you want to believe in. You still have made a choice. Think about it. 😊
@mattbaker57573 ай бұрын
I think that celestial voice can mean anything spiritual, any religion or belief in any higher being, a voice from no where and everywhere, not limited to a God, but might be considered a spiritual guide, or angelic messenger, aliens speaking to you telepathically, what ever you believe it is, heard but not seen. And it could be something audible to you or just an inner voice you hear whether real or imagined. Phantom fears are fearing the unknown or in myths that effect the way you live and need not or fiction or lies told to scare you, of non-existent threats that effect your life because you choose to let them. Kindness that can kill can have all kinds of interpretations, and either a giving or receiving perspective.

You need to do Cygnus x-1 book 1 off of farewell to kings and Cygnus x-1 book 2 of off hemispheres off of the albums and in one video because the songs are related to each other.

Love this song, albeit primarily for the music. I think Peart’s family were Methodist Christian. Alex’s parents were Serbian Orthodox and Geddy’s family was most certainly Orthodox Jewish. Growing up in the ‘60s, all three would have had a stultifying (and, in Geddy’s case, suffocating) experience of organized religion. It was also almost de rigueur for them to have rejected their respective families’ faiths as young teens. As the lyricist, Peart was not just rejecting Methodist determinism (defined further below), however. He used it as a proxy for all organized religion, which was certainly something his band mates could get behind. The problem was (and remains) that most Christians don’t subscribe to a deterministic theory of salvation. Rather, the majority of us would instead subscribe to the proposition that free will is a sine qua non element of our faith. God doesn’t want automatons, we say; “He” wants beings capable of freely choosing to seek “Him” (or not). Arguably, this approach pretty much negates the idea that God somehow directs people’s lives, much less taking an interest in who the next President will be, etc. - but it’s not the religious faith any members of Rush were taught some 60 odd years ago (or that many evangelical Christians in the U.S. continue to believe today). Hence, we see Peart creating a false dichotomy with this song between religious belief and free will. So, Peart writes: “you can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice” but says he “will choose a path that’s clear… free will.” The rest of us believers, he implies, are “a planet of playthings [who] dance on the strings of powers we cannot perceive.” While there’s no doubt the man was a brilliant autodidact, the fact [obviously] remains that he never studied an intellectual discipline - and his writing often showed it. That being said, it was still head and shoulders above anything else being written for rock songs (then or now). Christian determinism - by the way - is essentially an interpretation of St Paul’s writings that posits that it’s already been decided who gets “saved” and who will become the demons’ charcoal. Since nobody knows whether they’re among the saved (aka “the elect”), we are all supposed to take whatever steps we can to avoid having to take the ultimate brimstone bath. The funny thing is that many atheists actually subscribe to a similar mode of thought: scientific determinism, which posits that humans only experience the illusion/sensation of free will - even though the truth is that every so-called decision we might think we make was already pre-determined by our genetics and their interplay with our respective environments. From this perspective, “if you choose not to decide” continues with “you still haven’t made a choice” instead!
@cpmf21123 ай бұрын
Most people do not choose their faith or religion though, it is chosen for them as children before they ever have the knowledge to make "free will" in such a choice meaningful. Determinism is really that your parents were determined to make you go to church with them.
@Fred-vy1hm3 ай бұрын
@@cpmf2112 Exactly, my parents never pushed religion so it's never been a matter of choice for me but rather a non issue that has no relevance to my day to day life as I've long rejected the idea of a belief system that tells you what you can and cannot think and prescribes a punishment for not doing so.
@Fred-vy1hm3 ай бұрын
The line if you choose not to decide you still have made a choice refers to agnosticism.
@SnowDogisVictorious3 ай бұрын
@@Fred-vy1hm, me neither. That's why I'm happy to be a Christian (just not of the evangelical or fundamentalist varieties).
@SnowDogisVictorious3 ай бұрын
@@Fred-vy1hm, I disagree. The dichotomy Peart draws is fundamentally between freedom and determinism. "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice" would be a fundamental come-back for the proponent of free will, vis-a-vis determinism. Sure, that would arguably include agnostics, but Peart's beef wasn't with agnostics. Indeed, he sometimes sounded very much like an agnostic himself in his books. He was targeting the religion he was presented with as a child (or at least his youthful understanding of it).

I believe you asked about relating to God and freewill. Im a rush fan, and a god person not the only one. I see you believe also, yeah the religious thing involved, but Im going to take a dive into the pool cause I see, go out and tell the good news Id rather be relaxing in Hawaii, after more than 2 hrs of editing this one comment lol. My view I'm hoping everyone understands when it comes to eternal salvation, revelations 3:20 "Behold I stand at the door and knock, whoever hears my voice, and opens the door to me, I will come into him, and dine with him and he with me." this happened for me when I was a kid many moons ago, I heard his voice (not religion) and opened the door. this occurs when the holy spirit prompts you to ask Jesus to forgive you of all your sins and asking him into your heart. this is eternal salvation and the purpose for the crucifixion.Once you have this eternal bond he will reveal himself to you. writing about my life with God and hidden things, concerning heaven and the powers of darkness. well wishes p.s. love freewill and rush
