Lifeson is so underrated. Just try playing some of his parts. Much more sophisticated than they may seem at first.

My favorite Rush song is still the first one I fell in love with, 2112. As a prog fan, it's hands down one of the best songs of all time. Epic, powerful, legendary with moments of intimacy. Amazing work.

This is so cool to see Alex still keeping up with the modern times, and making his tones accessible to the masses. Rush went through a lot of stylistic changes, and always managed to keep their ear to the ground with what was hip, and what they could add to their musical gumbo, so it’s nice to see the tradition continuing.

Jeez! Those runs in the intro! Superb! 😎 I'm showing my age, but the two classic rock guitarists current when I began learning were Robin Trower and Alex Lifeson. It's great to see this collection of capture's from Alex's rigs.

'Distant Early Warning' and 'Red Sector A' and 'Kid Gloves' from the album 'Grace Under Pressure' His ambient splashes are legendary.. Also, Middletown Dreams from 'Power Windows', 'Show Don't Tell' from 'Presto' - The high end jangles and opening riff are so brilliantly inventive.. 'Time Stand Still' from the album 'Hold Your Fire' is a master work of guitar tone... sooooo many examples..

The Marshall Club & Country was Marshall’s take on a Fender Twin amp. He used 2 of these amps on the “Moving Pictures,” “Signals” and “Grace Under Pressure” albums.

La Villa Strangiato's solo, dynamics are unreal, over 7/8. YYZ's solo, has a little Asian flair to it. Rush is the best, Alex is always overlooked because of Geddy and Neil.

Meh, it's pretty easy to get most of Alex's epic tones on your own. It's more fun, too. It's all pretty basic stuff, the magic is in the playing. Early stuff is honky marshall with some reverb and delays. Later 70's added some chorus/flanger/phaser type sounds. Some of the early '80's stuff was solid state believe it or not. All culminating in my favorite Alex Lifeson tone, Power Windows. Hate me if you want but I love that mid 1980's guitar sound.

I wouldn't say Lifeson is in my all time Pantheon of Tone (will always love Rush though) but this all sounds pretty spot on to me! I would imagine these captures would slot in really well with most Rush tracks with Alex removed. I think these collections are just bursting people's bubbles about their hero's actual amp tones and preferences. The Satch collection sounds quite dark in general, but that absolutely makes sense in the context of his music. When I hear those captures in context, they work just as intended.

I saw a Satch interview where he said his tone was set not for screaming high sounding solos due to that basically his show was an hour and a half guitar solo. A tone that is easier on the ears. I found that concept interesting.

@patrickdenny-pk5ko I've grown to love that sound a lot since making a similar discovery. Same thing with Aerosmith on Rocks. I think it was an Ampeg V40, or at least an Ampeg combo amp. Sounds quite ratty in isolation, but it's just got mojo all up in there. I used an SVT amp model on my Pod Go for that sound, and it's one of my go to sounds ever since.

That Marshall 4140 is really nice. I think he may have used a couple (one clean , one driven) and maybe even with a HiWatt as he played them around that time. Check out the Anarchist as a recent-ish release

Man I could go on and on about Alex Lifeson... Listen to the guitar work on 'Natural Science' from Permanent Waves. Really cool stuff he's doing on there. I am obsessed with his tone from their 90s 'grunge' record Counterparts. I think he used 5150s on that record? Not totally sure but sounds so good to my ears.

Rush is one of those bands where, in spite of me being a big fan at one time, I look and see they've released more albums that I haven't heard than ones I have. Iron Maiden and Jethro Tull being 2 others. What surprises me is when I do the usual trick of looking on Spotify to see what people are streaming from an artist 2112 isn't featured at all? I'm not saying they're wrong but they're wrong. That was *the* Rush album. For me that is Rush. So I don't really recognise all this YYZ stuff or particularly like it if I'm honest. They were this mid/late 70s band with riffs, acoustic guitar parts that impressed us no end and what we thought as teenagers were deep conceptual lyrics. During the 80s even though they were releasing albums and mentioned in Kerrang we weren't listening to them much at all. Nor going to see them play. Maiden (who took the 'write songs about Samuel Taylor Coleridge poems and stuff' from Rush and ran with it) and Ozzy, Van Halen were more our wheelhouse by that point. I guess it's telling that they didn't feature in Monsters of rock. By 1985 half the bands were wearing makeup and dresses and the other half were metallica et al and fans followed suit. We went down the metallica route (although we did go to see Wasp for some reason) A couple of years later we'd seen Vai, Satriani et al play and largely stopped listening to or trying to play stuff from your average band guitarist. I'm trying to gauge here whether Lifeson has a following today guitarists or if these 'Brian May' and 'Lifeson' collections are mostly aimed at people my age? If so, IK Multimedia should note I'm trying to play Ted Greene chord progressions more than sounding like 70s guitar players - although I do play along with isolated EVH guitar tracks occasionally. Yes, if they'd existed back in the day, along with computer software that could make your guitar sound like Rush we'd have snapped their hand off. Back in the day we spent most of our time with Rush trying to figure out and playing all the pseudo-classical stuff, intro to Farewell to kings, Discovery, The trees, LVS et al than we did his lead playing. Riffs like Passage to Bangkok were popular too. I guess that was similar with Randy Rhoads, if a rock guitarist played something vaguely classical sounding or an acoustic intro we thought we were John Williams if we played it (and yes we got tabs for Cavatina too) which made us think Alex and Randy were not just rock guitarist but brilliant classical musicians even though with hindsight I guess these pieces probably wouldn't be classed as more than grade 3 or 4.

Thats bad ass! When re-taught myself to play lefty, Alex Lifeson is who I turned to learn his solos and technique. I was a rythm player righty but left hand Ive totally flipped Im a lead player on lefty. So I even went and bought a left handed single cut with a floyd just to play lime light. ( Not the A-L Epi though, it has gold hardware LOL ) Now its a good thing I dont live with any body. Because I LOVE playing Limelight especially the solo. I play it over and over and over again, if I had a mate she would bust that guitar over my head!! Well time to get that dam tone x one working becuase I must have these clones. Thanks John!!

Im an all tube guy and i just bought Tonex one to try at home. So offcourse the damn thing wont connect to my mac. Read tons of forums, and many have this issue. IK is holding my off with bad suggestions, and testing my patience. So now im stock with some ok clean tones and some bad overdrive sound from the stock presets. But I will say that the feel is way better than the helix im using for late night practice. Cant put my finger on it, but it just feels better.

After hearing a lot of these collections, and loads of Tonex modeled amps, I'm actually less interested in buying some of them. I don't have the pedal, and only use the software version. With time, I think I could get close to these tones - I been using/creating Amplitube (and now Tonex) patches for about 8 years. Take the second amp that John played through - it's a Marshall, not the Club & Country Marshall, just a Marshall. Could a regular old Tonex Marshall be tweaked to approximate this one? Sure could.
