As a Brazilian I can surely say that it's not that easy to just 'use another app'. Here in Brazil basically EVERYONE uses WhatsApp. If you have a smartphone and a phone number it's literally impossible to talk to people in the internet if you're not using WhatsApp. It would be really nice if we all could use something other than these big tech junk, but I guess we're all fucked in the hands of Meta at least for a while.

@nomore-constipation Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting dilemma. I'd personally like to just avoid anything "everyone else" uses. Unless it's in a bubble of sorts. It's like having WindowXP back in the day. I moved early to Linux because I didn't want to have to use what everyone else was using and all the security issues I ran a Virtual Box with XP but I actually made my kids slowly acclimate to using Linux as they grew up. Even installed it on a laptop so they could play games on a VB on XP. Sure it was slow as hell but it also was just a low graphics game not like today. Gotta tell you, one of the best decisions I made back then was to teach them a different OS. They now don't have fear in using another OS like the rest of the population seems to have. Lol

True (especially people in Latin America). It has to be plan B in that case: maximum social profit while mitigating the risk and cost to you to minimum. If you can, try to get an independent separate phone for each situation (social, work, etc). Treat it like you would passwords. Harder for those who are living in countries with SIM registration (thus no access to burners), but at this point the increased cost is worth it in my opinion. Also try to always convert people out, it might work and they might switch (low chance of success, but also low effort at attempt).

Maybe you could do a video about the so called "Public Records Databases" or "People Search" sites. It's scary how easy it is to find the current address (and past) home addresses and other info. This attack vector reminds me of how in Roblox, you could make anyone say a text chat message via scripts, including players. Roblox even wrote a similar "We'll ban you if you abuse this" note in the documentation. This led to an incident in July 2022 where players accidentally got banned by joining a malicious place (or hacked games) where they would automatically say horrible phrases which triggered the automated moderation. Thankfully, Roblox did poison ban the malicious users and start fixing the vulnerability (can't find a date-stamp on if and when it was fixed...), and affected players were able to get their accounts unbanned if they could show Roblox Support that they got banned via the exploit.

As I'm still working on a decentralized messenger with GNUnet: I implemented links to start a chat with someone, not using a phone number or even a username. It uses a public key of a randomly generated key pair (per link) which allows you to retrieve the actually required information (which are a 512bit hash and another public key) to start communication. However the user who created the link can drop it at any time technically, leaving zero information behind bound to them. Also the hash required to open a chat is randomly generated for each chat room. The public key required to start communication is randomly generated per peer in GNUnet. But you don't need to use your own personal peer in theory. So even that part could be not identifying you. In short though: The best thing an attacker would get from scraping those links is public keys which might point towards the peer you use. But then they still don't know who runs this peer and who would be behind this link if not retrieved otherwise. There's also no differentiation between links pointing towards group chats and private chats yet.

@fra34543 Жыл бұрын
Classic stuff, don’t open any links, not trusting everything they send you, stuff like that. For experience I can say don’t trust neither if the SMS seems legit, always check with the service that should sent you that, just to be sure.

In their defense. Phone numbers and names are pretty public information. You don't have to dig deep to find it.

Against this defense: Activity data and "updated" info about the numbers aren't meant to be pretty public
