I was 10 years old in the fall on 1966. I saw a woman as second in command. Eventually, I went to a Star Trek convention in Los Angeles. The entire cast was there, including Gene (last con before his passing). Also, De Kelly was there, reading his incredible poetry. I saw Majel in an area talking to the fans. I walked slowly up to her and mumbled my love of the show when I was 10. She hugged me so tight. Trek was and is an incredible blueprint for the future.

My father was an original fan. He started to watch Star Trek when it first aired in the sixties. I was about five. I remember him wiring a pair of headphones into the TV so that he could watch his show without missing anything, He even had a switch so we could talk to him during the commercials. He didn't live long enough to see TNG, or the motion pictures, but I know he would have loved it all. I did. When I was old enough to know what it was, I was able to see the original series as reruns, on cable. I saw all the motion pictures, and I was able to watch TNG with my son. Now my son is in his mid-thirties, and he plays the online game. When he talks about the game play, he talks about it the same way my father would have. I can honestly say Star Trek played a role in shaping our family, and that it still does, and probably will long after I'm gone.

First rule: no technology more advanced than in TOS, no aliens that were unknown in TOS.
@brachiator1
@brachiator1 2 жыл бұрын
@@barcham First rule, break all the old rules. Second rule, remember the first rule. So while I agree that they should avoid new technology that is wildly incongruous to TOS, they need to remember that the original show was defined by a 1960s vision of the future. We have already moved beyond that. And I definitely want to see new aliens as part of the Federation. I presume that we only saw a small part of that world in TOS.
@barcham
@barcham 2 жыл бұрын
@@brachiator1 If you want new aliens, set the new series AFTER TOS. That was the mistake they made with STD, they set it BEFORE TOS when it should have been set after DS9. Leave the originals ALONE. Either start fresh in some future date, or move it to an alternate timeline.
@brachiator1
@brachiator1 2 жыл бұрын
@@barcham You don't need the nonsense of an alternate timeline to rationalize intelligent revisions. TOS was a cheap 60s show that had to creatively escape the shackles of budget restraints. Fans need to stop trying to make every freaking compromise into rigid canon. In my mind, we were only shown part of the Federation, not every member species. He'll, if I rebooted the series, Earth would be a junior member of the Federation. Also, I think the original TV show only showed humans as star ship captains. This is unnecessary for the new series.
@barcham
@barcham 2 жыл бұрын
@@brachiator1 They did that in Enterprise, where the Federation did not even exist yet. There is no valid reason for prequel series. What is the point? All they do is invalidate everything that came before them. It would be simple to just set any new series in the future, as they did with Picard. I grew up with the original series, watching it in FIRST RUN. I understand why kids and millennials do not share the same reverence for TOS as those of us who watched it first run, but we really don't give a shit what you think. To be quite honest, your opinions are basically meaningless. DON'T FUCK WITH THE ORIGINAL and make your own series set decades or even centuries in the future. Whatever you do, however, I really don't care because I will not be watching it. I would rather watch the remastered Babylon 5 over any Star Trek series ever made, and yes, that includes TOS.

I first encountered Anson Mount in "Hell on Wheels," and it was his portrayal of Cullen Bohannon that had me glued to the series. I didn't realize he played Pike in any of the Star Trek series, because after a lifetime as a Trek fan, I gave up watching because the complicated story arcs and convoluted themes and characters had taken the fun out of it. This new series gives me hope that I can return to the franchise, and that after each episode I can again arch my right eyebrow in that Spock-inspired way that I practiced so hard to master as a kid (and annoyed my parents to no end) and say, "Fascinating."

Dave, like you I've been watching it since it was simply Star Trek ... Season One of the first series. Discovery has been disappointing. The first big disappointment for me was the revised look of Klingons. But I have continued to watch Discovery, being optimistic and hopeful. That optimism and hopefulness have not necessarily been rewarded. Tossing Discovery out into the future was a good step. I still watch it, but it's not a 'must see' for me. I actually enjoyed Picard and I'm looking forward to what unfolds in the new season. But I'm really hoping an Enterprise with Capt. Christopher Pike will feel a little bit more like home.

I'm 62, watched TOS as a young girl and rolled my eyes through this entire video. The idea that the majority of the audience can't deal with Discovery because they're uncomfortable unless they see a white CIS male they can relate to in the Captain's seat? They threw a temper tantrum over Klingon hair? Spock not mentioning his sister in canon after she was jettisoned into the future? Really? "Strange New Worlds" isn't going to bring the fandom back together. We'll still be split between the people who want to legislate the Dark Ages of the 5th century back into being and those of us who actually evolved. I'll watch the new show because I liked "The Menagerie," not because it's going to right all the supposed wrongs in the Star Trek universe. SMH.

Ah! The good old days of watching Star Trek in black and white in a 19 inch TV with monaural sound in the afternoon after school before dinner every day from Monday to Friday. It captured the imagination of a school boy with good grades in a middle class home with military family members and the prospect of a service career. Nobody wanted to be a day trader, or a professional gamer, or an influencer, or a CEO. The adventure was in pushing the boundaries of Space and students with good grades, self disciplined, physically fit and proficient was the objective of sports. All these interpretative judged extreme sports or console electronic game based skills that rule the media scape of today did not even figure in the lives of the characters of this space opera. It was tridimensional chess, card games of chance, physical training to mitigate long space travel and competitive non contact sports for recreation and martial skills for the job. It predated the USAF I would later join where “Service before self. Integrity above all else. Excellence in everything we do” became my Trek. Discovery is to down to earth and to much like afternoon TV with all the fake courts and judges, gossipy audiences trolling through all the human refuse to entertain bored house-locked individuals seeking to feel better of the failure of others instead of improving themselves and their situation. But it is normal of a society like ours where reinventing the wheel replaced most creative original ideas and Franchises rule, remakes are profitable and The Rock is reinterpreting most roles (I am waiting for his Batman movie, his rendition of 007, his interpretation of Tarzan…) Having lived through the origins of most cultural iconography since 1957 it is difficult to see the newness of what now bears the name of the Star Trek I watched in that little box before supper.

Story arcs are the progression of characters over time. They had that too, but it wasn't the driving force behind every episode, just to continue the arc. Whether it was Q, Worf, Data, Odo, Quark, they all had their own arcs, but their progression from show to show wasn't the episodes' only story. They all had AMAZING story arcs and even two partners, is just not so, to me, with the newer stuff. I believe Strange New Worlds may go back to that. We need Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek today, like we haven't since the original pilot episodes of Captain Pikes Enterprise in Sept of 1966. The 60's were a time of hreat worry and upheaval in America. I think you’re misrepresenting the 60s. I even think you’re misrepresenting what Roddenberry did with TOS.Trek was largely written by serious sci-fi writers. Peace and justice had almost nothing at all to do with TOS. It was however generally optimistic and hopeful simply based on its structure. TOS was variously patriotic, warned against the cultist side of the peace movement, And even made the case that real war was necessary sometimes while clearly peace was preferable and an important goal.

I was and still am an enormous fan of TOS. I can watch those episodes over and over and never fail to be entertained. Next Gen, DS9, and Voyager were pretty good and had the advantage of much higher budgets and newer technology, which enabled them to produce a more visually pleasing product. And some episodes were truly outstanding. But that rewatchability just isn't there. Enterprise was somewhat disappointing but had its moments as well. But then we come to Discovery. I flatly refused to pay to watch it. I knew that sooner or later it would be available free of charge, and sure enough, less than a month after it premiered, I was able to watch the first three episodes on KZbin. It was an unmitigated disaster. A complete train wreck. They desecrated the very spirit of Star Trek with every minute of film. I will never watch any of the other episodes of Discovery. When CBS acquired Star Trek it was the end of everything good and familiar and even slightly enjoyable about Star Trek. I will give Strange New Worlds a fair viewing but it will have to be pretty spectacular to cover the stain of Discovery.

STD (how appropriate those initials) defecated on everything that was (is) wonderful about TOS. I watched only the first season of STD and was appalled. I refuse to consider it canon or in any way legitimate ST. It's just fan fic to me -- bad, really bad fan fic made by people who absolutely did not "get," and possibly even hated, TOS. There is way better ST / TOS fan fic on KZbin, some of it good enough I'd almost consider it canon. And f* all the whiny crap about "canon" being for religion -- in terms of storytelling, canon means only internal consistency within the stories. And yes, TOS had it's own many little inconsistencies, but they were minor and easily explained away, not the gigantic divergences from the established story universe that STD and the JJ universe concoct.

Agreed. I watched TOS from the beginning (in the 1960s), and there was just something about the Trek shows that followed that just didn't do it for me. But, I still watched some of them and supported all the movies. They were still Star Trek. Upon re-watching Enterprise, surprisingly, it became my 2nd favorite Star Trek show. I tried and tried to give Discovery a chance, but there was just too much bad -- and it clearly wasn't Star Trek. I too will give the new Pike series a chance. It doesn't have to imitate TOS. Just give us some good stories, good characters, good writing, a little verisimilitude (make the world at least somewhat believable) and try to respect canon. That's all I ask.

And back in the 60s, it would have been more striking that a woman was high in the chain of command. So now she is more of a blank slate. It is not enough to just say, "hey fans, here's Number One from the early days of Trek." They need to make her a compelling character. I'm an old man in my 70s. I remember when Star Trek was fresh and new. It was exciting then and it's still exciting now. I think people have the right to their opinions, and it's okay to dislike ST if they feel they must, but I draw the line when they say it's a broken franchise. Some people don't like change. They don't like anything new. They only watch the old TV shows because they're nostalgic for what's been lost to them. It's a reminder of better days, I suppose, and they don't care about making new memories. What's great about ST is that it's about a future that none of us will ever get to see. It's still about exploring where no one has gone before. It's still about discovery of new alien empires. New technologies. New adventures. New character to love and hate. It's still about the undiscovered country and the mystery that's the universe! It gives me hope that mankind will eventually learn to live in peace amongst ourselves, because we sure won't be able to live in peace with strange aliens with even stranger cultures otherwise! I will watch the new series too. It's Star Trek, after all, so it won't be stuffy or uptight like some critics will undoubtedly prove to be...

The original pitch for Discovery was an Anthology series, in which case following characters that aren't the captain works fine. As an ongoing series, having anyone other than the main character creates the question of why that character is important and the center of events week after week; in season 1 they struggled with it and streched credibility to the breaking point. Season 2 used the "Red Angel" as a deus ex machina excuse. In season 3 they made her first officer, which more or less worked, and in 4 they finally just made her the captain and moved on. But, you may say, Lower Decks works fine with that format! Yes, but the main character is the leader of her little circle, and it's both episodic and a *comedy.*

I have been watching Star Trek for years. I vaguely remember when the 1970s animated show was first broadcast. I am cautiously optimistic about Strange New Worlds. When I saw Pike in Discovery, I thought that he was COOL and said that I loved his interpretation of the character. I also watched Star Trek: Lower Decks and loved it. So, I will happily give Strange New Worlds a shot and will give my final opinion after the season finale has been broadcast. Concerning Burnham and Spock. I actually thought there was a missed opportunity to retcon the fact Spock never mentioned her before. Watch the episode Star Trek (TOS): Journey to Bable. In that episode, Spock's mother recalls how his classmates ridiculed him for being half human (and that he wasn't truly Vulcan). Spock would run home fighting to not cry. However, she knew that he was breaking up inside. MY RETCON: Build on TOS episode saying that other children criticized Spock... They used Burnham as the leverage and a symbol to voice that criticism. They would claim that he could no more claim to be Vulcan than she could. That is why he never mentioned her (because he grew to resent her) and also why he and his father hadn't spoke for years. Spock's decision to join Star Fleet instead of the Vulcan Science Academy was just the last straw for a feud that was building over years. He resented the fact that his father brought Michael to live with them. Two facts established in TOS retconned together and developed early Spock as a tragic character.

@@ottomellar6774 Also you missed the point of the last paragraph of my post from 5 months ago. If they made Michael part of the ammunition intended to say that Spock isn’t fully human then that would have fleshed out the scene fro Journey to Babel (for those who know that story) but still be complete enough fro those who don’t know TOS episode. I will be watching with a cautious optimism. My concern is that - in spite of their promises - Kurtzman & co. will not be disciplined enough to restrain themselves from building a show culture that once again alienates half (or more) of a rapidly shrinking ST fan base.

they are simply not capable of it. they cant see past their own biases and apparently arent intelligent enough to percieve this. i dont hate nu NOT trek because of a paucity of straight white male good guys. i learned of the triviality of identity at single digit ages with "let that be your last battlefield". i hate it because it insult my intelligence and completely subverts the hopeful vision and message that made me love star trek.

we need more LGBT+ relationships in star trek. and why aren't there any explicit soft core LGBT+ scenes ? like you have hetero-cis scenes, we should have LGBT+ explicit scenes. and we need more diversity too, i think discovery has too many white people in it. is this a white supremacist show ? is this kkk ? we need more LGBT+ and less white in the show.

Ummm. Robert Meyer Burnett has gone on record as stating that Fuller’s vision for DIS was very different from what it became. He’s spoken with him often on the subject and had seen the original treatment… It’s believed that Kurtzman forced him out.

I think that Discovery totally lost its way until the Enterprise, with Pike, came along. After this, I personally could not care less what happened to anyone on Discovery, nor what happened to the ship itself. It never did engender any connection or true love for any character. On the other hand, when the Enterprise and Pike came along, I hoped this thread would be continued and that the Discovery thread would be discarded. Star Trek was comprised of morality plays, and every episode tackled issues we have to live with today. Discovery just ended up sodomizing all true Trek fans.

Of the current Star Trek shows the only one that sticks to Roddenberry‘s original version is a half hour animated comedy. The Oreville is a vastly superior Star Trek show to anything other than lower decks currently airing. That said strange new world sounds like we might actually get some real Star Trek again.

With the current bunch in charge, the best we can hope for is it might not suck as badly. And yes, that's a pretty pathetic estimate, but that's how far Star Trek has slid down into the ditch. Fan film producers these days are making the current writers on Discovery and Picard look like lobotomized baboons.

I'm an Old Trekkie, at least in the sense that I was born in 87, so I grew up watching the "1st Golden Age of Trek". Personally I was extremely impressed with Discovery and how they managed to tie-in the story, and of course the visuals are amazing! Also, I'm not a baby, I realize that as our technology develops that they needed or wanted to update the look. In that regard I have no problems with the new look of the Klingons or any other alien races, because shows always get visually better/different as we develop the capabilities to show those visuals.

As you described the debates among Star Trek's creators, I considered that come what may, Gene Roddenberry's creation inspired the world to create amazing technology. When you began to explain Star Trek's original dramatic design, I started to realize how strongly the characters were impressed upon me as I grew up. You point out that the Captain is moral, and strongly positive, as is nearly everyone else in the Federation. You are right. That was the view of mankind and society I grew up with. I'm a believer, too: positivity enables people to work and create solutions, and to pull together. Now that you have pointed this out, I have decided I want my optimism back. Federation people had a disciplined yet respectful society, with an understanding that we are all human. It was believed people were not only decent but also capable. People across the world enjoyed the benefits of perseverance by Edison, Ford, Westinghouse, Bell and Tesla. (Tesla's story is a cautionary tale that should remind us that US Government is hardly the Federation.) Those positive outlooks and expectations were the better part of American society before it was waylaid by resentment and fear. Between this video's narration, the music, and the scenes of Pike's original story from decades ago, my emotions briefly got the better of me. As I watched Anson Mount persevere while things blew up around him, as he counseled his crew, I thought to myself how people take examples from one another. This worked very well in the age slightly predating my lifetime; that world had some good things I should miss more strongly. Thank you for bringing us the news that the uplifting Star Trek we grew up with is on its way back. If you're wrong and it isn't, thanks for the thought, and we'll all figure something out. Live long and prosper, everyone!

@@Caseytify Roddenberry's stories and productions are inspiring to many of us. Science fiction certainly drives science and technology, by giving people things to imagine, or questions to answer. I regret to say many of the surreal, dystopian social developments portrayed in the original series have come to pass in real life. I suppose we did not heed these cautionary tales.

They never had to change Star Trek the way they wanted. Some things just can't be change. As soon as they at Enterprise explained to us the different appearance of the Klingons between the TOS and the TNG-era, Discovery would turn them into completely new strange ugly creatures. And that's just one of the many problems I have with Discovery. They were supposed to set the story of Discovery in the 32nd century from the beginning.

@Grim UK: No. You're mongering, at least a bit! Let's be honest, many 'fans' are crybabies at best! I am convinced that many _`fans`_ are not actual fans of Star Trek. At all. They're just trash! Somewhere between trolls and bigots, who act like they are all offended when they enjoy pissing people off - they _`get off`_ on it - and, inevitably some of them are, actually pissed off internet geeks, certainly the majority of which don't give a damn about Star Trek, at all, and who align, politically, socially, with the alt-right. You saw them have the same reaction to the Ghostbusters reboot, that was an all female main cast, and to Captain Marvel when it was released! It didn't matter how great or how terrible those movies were, to those idiots; they were determined to shred those movies no matter what, purely because of the perceived progressiveness contained within the storylines, and that is what has been happening to Star Trek since even before Discovery. I can hardly imagine how it is possible that CBS was dumb enough to fall for any of the crybaby antics of the _`fans`._ And the user(s) that uploaded this video may very well be exactly that; they did spew a few lies & ignorant opinions in, at least, this video. This is so stupid it's incredible...
