I love how they go for strategies that SHOULD work, keeping themselves in the air to throw attacks she couldn't sense, but she still manages to detect those attacks with her hearing and counter them. It just goes to show that Toph knows her own weaknesses and has developed measures to circumvent them.

It's not exactly her hearing. Toph's seismic sense extends to all earth regardles of whether its connected to the ground, allowing her to see rocks flying at her. And it's not bending either, you could throw a rock at her with only your physical ability and she'll still catch it.

Actually, thats not it either. Toph 'sees' around her by sensing vibrations in the earth. Sort of like ground sonar. She can sense all movements around her, and if someone picks up a rock to throw at her she will see the person picking it up and throwing it. Once its in the air though, she cant see it. She predicts where the rock is based on the angle and strength of the throw

Because said rock would vanish from her vision the moment it stopped touching the ground. Then at the same time she'd be utterly defenseless against barrages because if she can't see or sense the projectile in the air she doesn't know if it's being propelled at her at full force or perhaps the bender deliberately propelled with less force to make it slower. Or sends multiple rocks at varying speeds. She would get hit. Toph can sense vibrations even through the air that's how she senses rocks flying at her despite them being first risen then propelled.

rather than her simply being "smallest girl with the biggest punch", her biggest perk is that she was born blind and she became the ultimate earth bending powerhouse in the series by taking advantage of said disability instead with a very quirky personality to booth, small girl or grown woman only makes small difference and her bending certainly don't always need to pack a punch just to show how awesome she is, like her metal bending for example

I believe they said that they'd originally intended for Toph to be a boy, but thought it would truly inspire and add to her character by being a young girl who was blind. I love how Toph is a total powerhouse, and her blindness may have actually been turned into an advantage in combat because she learned how to sense the world around her, rather than only focusing on what can be seen like so many other benders in the series. I think that that is why everyone tends to forget that she's blind. Also, the reason that she's portrayed by this massive dude in the Ember Island play is because nobody wants to admit that they got their butts handed to them by a twelve year old girl.

It's super cool how they managed to make her disabled in such a way that she DOES learn to live with it and she IS still incredibly powerful, but they go out of their way to remind us that she does still have a disability that very much gets in the way of her life. Like, she can live with it and still have a happy life, but that doesn't mean it doesn't impact her. Appa getting stolen is one of the most crushing moments in the show, and it's not just because it's sad that our favorite flying bison got nabbed. It hurts so much seeing toph, this totally powerful and capable person who seems able to muscle through every situation, be almost completely handicapped by her disability ***while still holding up the team and being awesome***. In any other terrain she would be able to do enough to the attackers to help Appa fight them off without losing too much grip on the library, but in the sand she's... Blind.
