Good video and information. Only just found this but I am going to start selling camp firewood this year and see how it goes. I can get 2 to 3x the money for the same firewood and the same work as I will with home heating firewood. I am also thinking that presentation is everything. I look around literally everywhere I go and most firewood bundles are sloppy and poorly presented. What do you think about putting together a nice display rack for retail businesses instead of having it tossed on the ground? I am considering making racks cause I have my own sawmill too.

You can add a 'handle' to your bundle. Simply go one more wrap but bunch up the wrap to the middle at the top and let to go around the bundle until it reaches the 'handle.' Then you can put two pieces of packaging tape on each side of the handle to hold the loose end of the wrap. I think sticker is easier and better label... don't need to be that big. Just some thoughts.

Retailers (over here) have at least a 30% - 35% margin, so (over here, Again) they earn more per bundle than Joe, who does all the work… OK, they have the financing and inventory risk + overhead costs but with close to 0% intrest rates for the time being, a bundle sold on a road side stand delivers more per bundle when priced somewhat below what the retailers do ask for. Hi Scott. Most convenience stores works on a 40% mark up. You can google a retail markup calculator to do some scenarios. I find what a local store is selling theirs for and calculate back to what my cost would be. I go from there with negotiations.

Hi Joe! We are new to the bundled firewood game. A few retailers I’ve contacted are reluctant because they would most likely keep it outside and they are not a 24 hour business and are worried about theft. Are you mostly in 24 hr businesses?
@TheDriftlessHomestead3 жыл бұрын
One thing to consider... I have a stand at my house and still loose a couple. Wal-Mart has a system where the pay as the customer buys. Eliminating their labor and the supplier labor of checking in the product. So maybe if you accept the risk of your low cost product being stolen it will still pay off?
@ohiowoodburner3 жыл бұрын
All my accounts keep the wood inside. The industry term used for losses to theft etc is "Shrink." If the area is prone to high shrink maybe that location wouldn't be a good fit bc they would want to sell them cheaper and therefore want to pay you less per unit? I was working on a deal for a gas station chain that wanted me to come up with a lockable bin but for that extra work and given the $$ he was wanting to pay me per bundle it wasn't worth my time. I went and found higher end retailers.

Hi Joe, as usual great information. In speaking with a supplier of firewood bags, the cost of bags seems pretty significant in the total cost of the product vs. the cost of shrink wrap. Less upfront cost, but higher ongoing costs for using bags. The same supplier gave some advice it's best to try and sell direct, make more money that way. He said that if a bag of firewood sells at a store for $7.50 you'll get about $4.50 to $5.00 a bag. How has your experience been with direct sales? Higher profit, maybe lower volume? Can you give your thoughts on website design, cost, and ongoing maintenance and any ongoing monthly fees? Thanks for all your positive advice, it's very helpful to a budding firewood bundling entrepreneur - Will

@@ohiowoodburner : Well West Coast wood is light and fluffy compaired to you guys in the Midwest and East Coast.. Plus this truck owes me 2k in work for an engine I just put in it. For being 30 years old (just like my F250) its not super nice but it is not beat to death..

That bundle looks way better than any in my area, all the bundles here look like garbage, wrapped loosely, falling apart, very inconsistent sizes and alot of twisted limb pieces. No tags either. Your making me think I could take over this area with some good looking bundles 🤔

I think if you have noticed it you can make it work! Get it going!

I use bags but I’m thinking of going to wrap. Bags are like $75. So takes me over 15 bags to make my $$ back.
