One thing I find special that I don't see mentioned is how he seemlessly makes us, the viewer, different characters throughout the story. We are Jenny being mugged. We are Richard being charged at by Screech one moment, and the next we're Screech being shot at by Richard. We are the surgeon coming in to attend to Violet. We are Violet being beaten to death. It all helps us empathize that much more with multiple sides of the story.

So descriptive, and a flawless sense of rhythm
@AndrewJonesMcGuire Жыл бұрын
It's incredibly descriptive but also so necessary. Just think how many people will watch this exact scene play out in a TV show or movie, and not even raise an eyebrow, because the brain absorbs it passively. But with Ren's storytelling, and specifically the fact that we have to imagine the story he is telling, our brain works to fill in what is not present on the screen, which is why we are horrified, because we are actually processing the image he is painting so very descriptively. And that is necessary if we are going to start having conversations about the "controversial" content he presents us with. ♥️

You need to checkout his other music, he crosses many genres creating a sort of fusion that is all his own. REN is in his owe lane (btw he not only composes and performs his music, he also writes the music, the lyrics and produces it) He does duets with many musicians most people have never heard of but are super talented in their own right. Just a personal observation but I think American music has such a hold over us musically these days. I am not calling out American music, I love plenty of it, but because American culture is so formulated around corporate enterprise I find that the music that comes out of that is often specifically designed around marketability and sales and that has also spread through a lot of Western music in general. It's very common for American artists, even bands, to be picked up by Record labels early in their career and then become moulded into a product and it is less common for artists these days to build up their own following through regularly performing at smaller venues and in the streets. That's not to say that all music and bands who hail from the States automatically conform to that, there is tons of great music produced in America which doesn't but it almost always quite niche. Every now and again one can really break through to the mainstream, particularly 20-30 years ago but I get the impression it is becoming ever more rare. For example bands like Nirvana, who reached the very top but spent much of their early years in a very localised music scene, were more possible back in the 90's but since the 2000's, particularly once internet streaming became possible, such local music scenes are much less common worldwide and especially in America (it's 1 of the reasons I think many people reflect back on the 90's with such fondness as it was the tail end of an era where bands and artists had to really graft and develop on their own rather than just drop a KZbin video - & there are a pros and cons to both, I am just highlighting a point in time where there was a recognisable shift). However, I feel like the culture we have in Europe still toward smaller, localised music venues and, specifically, toward busking has the ability to really create interesting and unique artists who are able to cut through that and, in some cases, transcend to the mainstream. Just look at Ed Sheehan as a great example of an artist whose time spent busking in the streets really helped challenge and evolve his writing and musical talent to the point that, when he did eventually breakthrough, he felt very fresh and different. Ren's style has clearly been influenced by his background in busking too, where you are not performing to hoards of fans who have been sucked in by your brand and clever industry marketing but to normal people just walking down the street and so you have to be able to develop something "extra" in order just to get noticed and grab people's attention.

Couldn't agree more. Most of the truly exciting music I've heard in the past decade has not come from the US, with a few exceptions in a few different genres. I think that my generation still used to grow up dreaming of "the land of opportunities", but I think that ideal is getting more and more lost nowadays for various reasons. If that will translate into more musical experimentation, I'm all for that.

Welcome to the RENaissance, a home for the lost and broken; enjoy the ride If you want to dive more into the rap side of his catalogue, I'd start with "What You Want" which is a brilliant homage to the Beasties, followed with "Genesis" followed by "Sick Boy" followed by "Illest of Our Time" (this one goes after the previous one so you have some grasp of the meaning) and the trail goes from there For more ... Rock(?) fare... Follow the breadcrumbs to The Big Push ... and dive in (I personally suggest Sweet Little Lady, Swan Song, Englishman in New York, and the cherry on top ... I Shot The Sherriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop) Last but not least, don't be afraid to check down the alleys, Ren has built himself a circle of talented musician friends that will surprise you and make you glad you chose to look for hidden treasure (Hint: Chinchilla, Eden Nash, Sam Tompkins, and so many more)
