Before visiting Mongolia i had a stereotypical knowledge: cold asians riding horses....but NOW I know: as soon as you are kind, they try to be kinder; you are grateful; they are more generous. I do not know what kind of Mongolians were in the eras of my ancestors but I loved Modern Mongolians. For me, country is not about its territory, or its nature...but its PEOPLE and Mongolians deserve to be called a noble nation.

Mongolia is the 18th largest country in the world behind Iran. It only had 2 neighbors, Russia to the north and China to the south. The country is landlocked meaning it has no direct access to the ocean. Even though it is a very big country, it has a tiny population of just over 3.5 million people. The capital city of Ulaanbaatar has almost half of the country’s population. The gdp is a about 14 billion USD and the gdp per capita id around 4500 USD. The country is home to taiga forests in the north, the gobi desert in the south, grass plains in the east and tall mountains in the west. The average temperature of Mongolia is 1 degrees Celcius making it one of the coldest countries in the world. In the winter it can reach up to -30 degrees celcius, while in the summer it reaches a whopping 35 degrees celcius. Mongols make up 95% of the population, while the remaining 4% are comprised of Kazakhs, Tuvans, Altais and other turkic ethic groups. The Mongols form a branch in the Mongolic family. Mongolic also includes people like the Oirats, Buryats, Daur, and the Mongors. The Mongols speak a variety of dialects. The Oirats speak the Oirat language, the Buryats speak the Buryat language and the Daurs speak the Daur language. The Oirats are divided in many tribal groups, those being: the Torghuts that mainly live in Xinjiang province, the Khoshuts that live in Xinjiang and Qinghai provinces in China, the Altai Uriankhai that live in Khovd and Bayan-Olgii provinces of Mongolia, the Dorvod that live in Uvs province, the Bayad that live in Uvs and Zavkhan provinces , the Zakhchin that live in Khovd province, the Minghad that live in Khovd and Uvs province, the Oolet that live in Khovd and Uvs province etc… the Buryats are a little more complicated as many of the tribes aren’t buryat but tribes from other Turkic or Mongolic branches. The Khalkha mongols make up most of the Mongol ethnicity. They speak the Khalkha dialect and have many individual tribes within them. The inner Mongols are a subgroup comprised of 24 main tribes and many subtribes. They live in the Inner Mongolian autonomous region in China. The Barga mongols mainly live in Hulunbuir aimag of Inner Mongolia and speak a dialect of Buryat called Barga. The Mongols were mentioned by the Chinese as one of the tribes of the Proto Mongolic Shiwei people that lived in Manchuria. The Shiwei people eventually settled in the Khentii mountains in Mongolia. In the 12th century a boy named Temujin united the 5 khanligs of Mongolia and established the Mongol empire in 1206. He was then known as Genghis khan and set the bases for the largest continuous land empire in history. By 1259 the empire streched from Russia the west, Manchuria to the east, Lake Baikal to the north and Persia and Vietnam to the south. By 1271 the Mongol empire collapsed and split into 4 different khanates. The Yuan dynasty that was ruled by Mongol khan’s eventually collapsed due to the red turban rebellion led by the Chinese. The Mongols were then weakened and were unorganized into many rump states and tribal federations. In 1626 the Khorchin mongols subdued themselves to the newly established Jin dynasty of the Jurchens due to the fear of the Chahar mongols influence over them. In 1635 the Chahar mongols surrendered to the Jin dynasty. In the same year Huangtaizi khan of the Jin renamed the name Jurchen to Manchu. The next year he named his empire the Qing dynasty. In 1644 the Manchus took over Beijing and the Ming dynasty of China collapsed. In 1688 the Oirat mongols of the Dzungar khanate invaded into the Khalkha mongols territory. In 1691 the Khalkha khans and princes joined the Qing dynasty and helped supply the Qing with Mongol troops. Until 1755 The Dzungars and the Manchus fought a war that lasted around 6 decades. In 1755 Dawachi khan of the Oirats surrendered to the Qing army. In 1756 Amarsana of the Oirats started a rebellion against the Qing government. The rebellion ended in 1758 and the Manchu emperor ordered the mass genocide against the Oirats mongols. Qing rule of the Khalkha mongols spanned 250 years. The Mongols were divided into banners and the banners were ruled by Mongol noyans. The noyans gave their loyalty to the Manchu amban that were stationed in a large town. The Khalkha mongols had 86 banners, the Tannu Tuvans had 5 banners, the Khovd frontier had 32 banners, the Barga mongols had 17 banners, Inner mongolia had 49 banners, the Qinghai mongols had 29 banners, the Ili frontier had 13 banners, the Tumed had 2 banners and the Chahar had 8 banners. In 1911 the Khalkha mongols declared independence from the collapsing Qing empire. By 1912 they liberated the Khovd region and the Khvusgul Uriankhai banners and otogs of the Tannu Tuva. In 1915 under the treaty of khyakt Outer Mongolia would be under Chinese territory but as a special autonomous region. And this autonomy would be ensured by the Russian empire. In 1919 Chinese troops occupied Outer Mongolia for 2 years until the white Russians took over. Soon after the Red army kickstarted a communist revolution and the Mongolian people’s republic was established in 1924 under Soviet influence. In 1991 when the Soviet union collapsed the country had a peaceful democratic revolution switching from a socialist market to a capitalist market. The country still thrives today even though with all the hardships that it faced
