A lot of people confused about Crop Factor. 50mm on APS-C give you a comparable FOV as a 75mm on FF. Depth of Field also needs to be converted so your DOF is comparable to F/1.5 FF. However when it comes to light gathering and exposure, the lens is a true F/1. That means that at any given ISO you will be able to shoot faster shutter speeds than your usual F/1.4 FF glass. When it comes to image quality, it is true that APS-C sensors on average produce 1 more stop of total noise (or twice as much noise) than FF at any given ISO within the same technological generation. However having more noise DOES NOT effect your camera settings for exposure. STOP coupling Lens performance with Sensor Size. They are two different things, sensor sizes does not make a lens turn into a different lens. None of this matters BTW. If you want good photos, having a larger sensor and low F-Stops don't matter. What matters most is lighting and composition. Taking a photo at base ISO at night at a Round Table Pizza using the house lights with a Medium Format Camera will still produce a terrible image because overhead florescent lighting is terrible. No gear in the world will save you from a terrible looking photo. I think most people should invest in off camera strobes and lighting equipment before investing in Lenses.

Ok, I will say the comparison between a Leica lens designed for full frame and a Fuji lens designed for APS-C is a little apples to oranges. It's easier for a lens designed for a smaller image circle to garner lower F-numbers. In reality, the Fuji 50mm f/1.0 would be more comparable to a full-frame 75mm f/1.5 (in terms of AoV and DoF), which if you look at Sigma's 85mm f/1.4 ART lens, you can see the size and weight are closer in class.

F/1 sounds amazing until you realize that with the crop factor it's basically a 75mm f/1.5 so it's slower than a full frame with an f/1.4 lens. Great optics are great, but if it was a full frame f/1 lens that would be really impressive. The reason the leica looks softer is because it's meant for use with a full frame sensor. With a crop sensor camera you're zooming in on the center of the lens, magnifying any defects. The leica can let in more than a full stop more on a full frame sensored camera thus the crazy high price.
@SeanWashPhoto3 жыл бұрын
The FOV is a 75mm and the DoF is converted to an F/1.5. But the exposure is at an F/1. So it's not "slower" than a full frame F/1.4 lens since the "speed" of an aperture has to do with exposure not DoF. Now if you want to say that an APS-C has about 1-Stop more noise than FF at any given ISO, then that would be true. But that doesn't make the lens any less "slower" or any less impressive. This is a very impressive lens specs wise irregardless of sensor format.
@CroneKorkN4 жыл бұрын
This is actually a full frame equivalent 75mm f1.5. You have to apply the crop factor (which is 1.5 because of APS-C) to the focal length und the aperture.

I mean, the 35mm and 50mm options for a first lens are usually aiming for full frame - on APS-C we're talking about 23mm and 35mm. The 50mm f/1 is equivalent to a 75mm f/1.5 while the 56mm is equivalent to ~85mm f/1.8. That's nothing you'd choose as a first lens unless you very much know you only want to do portraits. The additional weight is not really important for hiking or travelling - it's a portrait lens after all, you use it on location or in the studio. It might be a point if you'd need to carry it around all day though. The additional noise is imho not an issue during a wedding - there are more noises around you so whatever. I found the 56mm f/1.2 slightly sharper actually - the focus point was set differently. Just compare the eyebrows. Manually focussing an f/1 lens is ... a challenge. I would not want to do this with modern day cameras unless it's a Leica M with the rangefinder system. It would still be quie a challenge to nail the focus. The actual advantage of the 50mm f/1 is the extra light for the focus system. The bokeh won't change much. I find the focal length to be quite odd though. Personally, I rather stick with the 56mm because of the 85mm equivalency, significantly lower price and less weight. Overall for me it's the more sensible choice.

Since this lens is equivalent to a full frame 75mm f1.5 its size and weight are pretty much in line with most other lenses in that range. So no surprises there. Crop factor and conversion to full frame equivalents should always be taken into consideration to get a better understanding of what a lens is capable of.
@MsIrrealis4 жыл бұрын
not really, no. If all you know is apsc, a conversion to FF makes zero sense.

Comparison vs Canon EOS R5 with RF 50 f/1.2 ? You could justify the cost with a followup video air/watercooling the R5, which seems to fix the overheating... and maybe vs Fujifilm GFX100 with the 80mm f/1.7 (medium format f1.7 🤯) when it releases?

Awesome video, Brandon! (I'll have to re-watch in 4k) A little suggestion - it would be great if you had a small (stylistically standardized) tool-tip with imperial-metric conversion when you mention measurements such as weight

I switched from Fuji to go full frame (canon r5) and I miss my xt3 and Fuji colors so much

imo, the benefits of full frame aren't worth losing the feeling of holding a fuji, or the loss of fuji's beautiful color science

In between different systems I always find Fuji and Nikon raw files(except D800 and D4 which Nikon goofed up)gives me the most satisfying colour out of the bunch when shooting landscape, Canon always feels "too warm" for me in landscape but great for portraits, it's a personal taste thing though.

It was hard to tell, but it looked a bit like you might have been focused on his nose with the leica lens (and not his eyes). At 1.0 I assume the dof is extraordinarily shallow, and prob hard to nail the focus with- which might explain how "soft" the leica looked. Or maybe I'm off base- hard to tell! The Fuji looks awesome in any case!

I remember when I had no idea what Brandon was talking about but I watched his videos anyway, because he delivered them so well. Now I am able to keep up with just about everything he says and would love if LMG put him at the head of a camera channel. That said, I don't share his passion for APS-C. Full frame is where the fun is at. An F1 loses all appeal when you realise it's not full frame. I don't think a channel dominated by crop sensor content would appeal to most camera enthusiasts.

Guys, Construction noise is not a big deal when we watch videos... but if you do care enough, you could try to process the mic's audio with NVidia Broadcast, you've already review it and it can do magic for this

I've been waiting for my copy of this lens for a while now. Things are a bit slow here. But between the 56 and the new 50 the biggest differences i've noticed are softer edges to the bokeh (better than the APD version without the light loss!), and barely any focus breathing which was a pleasant surprise for a Fuji where it's usually not a concern for them (and can be atrocious as a result). For thin DoF video, it looks pretty superb! It's definitely a cutting-edge lens for the XF, and it uses all of that glass well. Now someone buy me the 200mm F2, i want to do some street photography...
@WesPerry4 жыл бұрын
a) that aperture ring does sound lovely b) doesn’t give a “50mm portrait look”. It’s a 75mm f/1.5 equivalent lens...and given the preponderance of 85 1.4 lenses, not actually all that special at the end of the day (except to Fuji users). And also: The Leica Noctilux is a full frame lens, making the comparison a bit shaky.
@MsIrrealis4 жыл бұрын
It is special for apsc users. And it does give a 50mm portrait look. This is an apsc lens. And it is a 50mm lens. So it is pretty much the definition of a "50mm portrait look" for apsc users

Brandon is one of the best hosts at LMG I really wish he would do more hosting on the main channel. I couldn't care less about cameras and camera equipment, but I always watch a video with him hosting because he seems to be able to describe and detail what he is thinking so clearly.

As an owner of the XT-4 with the 56mm F1.2, this lens isn't worth the upgrade. If I didn't already own the 56mm I'd definitely be wanting to get the 50mm F1.0 for a prime lens in this focal length. Great video.
