why france and netherland have exact same flag :( (russia flag is a little different)
@AppalachianCatholicPoet Жыл бұрын
On today's episode of Sheldon Cooper presents Fun With Flags lol They're not "having the same flag." All three flags were designed independently and the color similarities are completely coincidental. Not to mention, the bars on France's flag are columns, not rows like Russia and Netherlands. And those two flags have the colors in different orders. So, it's false to say they're the "same flag." Plus, the chosen colors all represent something. Russia: the white color symbolizes nobility and frankness; the blue for faithfulness, honesty, impeccability, and chastity; and the red for courage, generosity, and love. Netherlands: The red band symbolizes bravery, strength, valor, and hardiness; the white band, peace and honesty; and the blue band represents vigilance, truth, loyalty, perseverance, and justice. France: The three colours are occasionally taken to represent the three elements of the revolutionary motto, liberté (freedom: blue), égalité (equality: white), fraternité (brotherhood: red). 23:33 "Would someone explain to me the English language, how can a P be silent?" Because most of those words come from Greek. In Greek, Pn, Ps, and Pt clusters are allowed and are therefore the P is pronounced. In English those letter clusters are not allowed, so the P is silenced. Basically it comes down to etymology and languages of origin. Remember, English is a language derived from many different languages such as Greek, Latin, Arabic, etc.

For France we have many explanations for why our flag is like it is. But the main explanation is the 1789 french revolution's explanation : the red and the blue symbolized Paris' colors and the white flag was associated to the nobles. Hence this explanation: the red and blue (paris) captured the noble (the white flag). if there's historian or ppl qualified in history who can correct me feel free to do it

Short history lesson. Russia's flag before 17 century was just Jesus's face. In a year 16-something tzar Peter decided to make brand-new Russia and (among other things) said, kind of: "We need a new flag for our new fleet. Also I like Dutch flag. Let's use it, but we're gonna change the order of stripes. Oh, and red must be redder." Boom! That's all.

English has such weird pronunciation because it's essentially all the western and central european languages blended together (with occasional loan words from most other languages too). The silent P in particular is most commonly from words with Greek origin. Almost all other languages still pronounce the P when they have the same word. So when your kids ask why English has so many weird pronunciations, you can say it's because English is a puzzle made of so many other languages. The 2 main ones would be German* and French, with a massive asterisk cause on German cause it's more like a shared ancestor than actual modern language relationship.
@drthmik Жыл бұрын
it is the Saxon part of Anglo-Saxon and another major part is just enough Gaelic to ruin all attempts to have consistent grammar and spelling rules
@aaronparry2636 Жыл бұрын
@drthmik exactly. Then, throw in the many phonetic shifts over time (e.g., the great vowel shift), some of which were geographically isolated, and you're left with our lovely collage of pronunciations that vary so widely around the globe.
@Pawtacle Жыл бұрын
Silent letters are weird because I feel like they still change the way you pronounce the word. Like in "pterodactyl", the P is supposedly silent but it sounds subtly different if you just say it plainly as "terodactyl" vs. if you lightly touch your lips together right before you pronounce the T (and I feel like the latter sounds more correct?)

I don't know if anyone explained this live, but the reason the English language is so hard on spelling is because it's an amalgamation of other languages. So you get some spelling words from Germanic bases, some spelling from French, some from Latin. It's a real hodgepodge and no one is willing to just trim the fat. Like the letter c. Who needs it? No one. The hard c sound is covered with K, the soft c with S. But good luk konvinsing anyone to get rid of c.
