I know I'm late to reply, but no you're not the only one. The effect wasn't explained very well. There's a red filter applied to the photo - one uniform shade of red - but because your brain knows that things aren't all one color, for example fruits which are usually many different bright colors, the red filter sort of "cancels out" & appears shades of red, pink, grey, etc. It becomes more noticeable if you stare at the picture for a minute or two. You might start seeing bits of other colors pop up where they aren't!

i mean the op is either joking or completely clueless. "youtube quality" has nothing to do with this effect, it was documented in the 1950s, long before youtube existed. this is about how our *brains* rebalance colors (after you stare at them for a long time in full screen - it won't be immediate, and won't work if your eyes can see other colors, like "real" green, at the same time). its basically the same effect you get after you wear anaglyph (red/blue) 3d glasses for a long time. when you remove them and close each eye alternately, the eye that had the red lens will see everything in blue and the eye that had the blue lens will see everything in red, because your brain rebalanced the input from each eye.

for most of that picture i only see red or pink. i see no oranges or greens at all. except for that area above the plastic cup. pause at 0:52. look at the plastic cup on the middle right of that picture. look straight above it. in between there and the arm (closer to the cup), that is definitely green. i even tried it on paint using the color picker tool. it is dark grayish-green im 100% positive. but aside from that, the picture is only red and pink as i can see.

It’s interesting, for me it changed right after I saw the video/explanation. First time the green was so obvious to me, I was almost in disbelief when he showed the wheel proving it was just a grey. But the day after I had watched the video for the first time, everything was all of a sudden obviously red (various shades) + grey. I guess once the brain knows the lighting conditions it initially perceived are not “real”, it can see the colors objectively for what they are

Same here but with red & green. They both look brown to me in dim light when I can still see other colors just fine. I think this has to do with the rods/cones (I forgot which one is for color lol) that see red or green needing more light in order to distinguish the two. Red/green colorblindness is the most common form in humans, & even other animals, like dogs, also see red & green as the same color (usually brown). So it makes sense that some of us struggle to see colors when we don't have enough light!
