Hybrid athlete here, I love long distance running and heavy lifting. I ran my 7th marathon last April, during the training cycle I continued my intense lifting cycle of 5 days a week, while running 4-5 days, only thing I cut out was my 3rd leg day which is normally Friday, once my Saturday long runs reached 14 miles. I actually shaved 22 minutes off my marathon time, from 4 hours and 48 minutes and some change to 4 hours and 26 minutes and some change 💪 and I didn't lose any muscle.

Edit to say: sorry for the incoming long post, but I’m a noob with stupid questions and maybe, some other commenters can help me because I’m sure Patty won’t see my post since she’s got such a huge following. I’ve been doing a beginner strength training program at home with dumbbells, mat(and booty bands for squats, hip thrusts, banded walking, etc), and a chair for Bulgarian lunges and hip thrusts using an app(a fitness influencer I found during the pandemic) for almost two months. I was aiming to lose some weight and gain muscle. I’m 5’6” and 176lbs because I was an emotional eater sometimes and I have bad anxiety. 😥 My motivation is great for doing the workouts. I show up every time. My problem is my diet. I have autism spectrum disorder, as well as ADHD, and I have a lot of sensory issues with food. Texture is a big deal for me, and, before I started working out, I ate the same meal every day for over a year because of the disordered eating that sometimes comes with ASD. Once I find something I like, it’s hard to get me to eat anything else. I also struggle to eat even my BMR of calories. I’m just not that hungry all the time. People with ASD have interoception issues where we don’t listen to our bodies cues to eat and drink. Many times, it’s because we get stuck on a hyperfocus and ignore everything but the thing we’re fixed on at the moment. I’m losing weight, but my smart scale says I lost a pound of muscle as well. I’m also terrible at finding recipes and lining up a diet to get the macros I need to succeed. I have no idea what to do. I just want someone to tell me what to shop for, and hand me the recipes to make for the week so it takes the guesswork out of the equation for me. I need food prep because I’m terrible with cooking regularly. I want to succeed, but I feel I’m going to fail because of my diet. I also don’t know how often I should increase the weight I’m lifting. I started out with little girly 3lb pink weights, and now I’m mostly using 10lb weights, and 20lbs occasionally for staggered bent over rows, staggered RDL’s, lying overhead tricep extensions, goblet squats, and hip thrusts. I do occasionally use 6lb weights for lateral raises and arnold presses. The Beginner program on my app does a 40 second timer with 30 second rests in between sets. Started out three days ago week, and now I’m up to four days a week. I make sure to control the weight and use good form so I’m not using momentum for reps and I keep tension on the muscle. The only problem I have with this format is that I don’t know how far I’m progressing because I only get so much time to do the exercise so I don’t know when to push myself to do more reps or up my weights. I also heard 30 second rests are too short and that you get more out of your sets if you wait 1-1.5 minutes in between sets. I’m also embarrassed to go to the gym because of the weight I still need to lose. I still can’t do a perfect squat all the way to the floor. I still can’t do a perfect lunge. I’m waaaay better than when I started, but I feel like I’ll look like a fool at the gym(I also don’t know how to use any machines) and I’m scared some rando will make a Tik Tok about how fat I am and how my form sucks or something. I guess I need more guidance than I’m getting from the app I use. Should I spend the little amount of discretionary funds I have to get a trainer a couple of times a month, or possibly join CrossFit? I’m so lost and I want to do this right. I want to look like you someday. Four or five years from now I want to look in the mirror and think, now I look like Patty. Also, should I get a kettlebell for swings so I work my core well? Should I invest in 15lb weights as my next goal, or get over my nervousness and just go to a gym with all the equipment I could ever want and get a trainer 2-3 times a month? Will people make fun of me at the gym if I’m not in great shape yet?? I don’t even know where to go or what to do after I’m done this program.

dude the vibes before and after the run is so different lol it's nice seeing you feel and sound 'lighter' after that run as much as i wanna try walking/running outside some time, the weather here is way too hot and humid for that (rn it's 91.4°f or 33°c, at 68% humidity) might get a heat stroke if i'm not careful (ok it's perfectly fine to run in this weather, but im a princess who gets fatigued from heat easily) 🥵 maybe someday i'll go to a cooler country and experience that runner's high you keep talking about 🏃♀ in the mean time i'll just hike through some rainforests in the area! 🌳 also yes, the jiggle is perfectly normal - arms, thighs, belly, etc. the toxic skinny culture of the 90s and 00s really did a number on the insecurity women have of our bodies. breaking free from that mentality is so so so cathartic random but for *manifest monday* i hope whatever's troubling you mentally and emotionally is finding its way out of your life. for myself i hope my gym crush is at the gym today (she spoke to me 2 weeks ago after i repped 90kg deadlifts) and that i'm not a nervous wreck if she talks to me again 🤞 ok have a good week ahead Patty! ✨
