So I had macco paint my third gen in 2006. Like you I did all of the prep work. I went an extra step and even taped the car in the parking lot. I had the even cheaper single stage enamel paint job done. When it came home I had to do a lot of wet sanding and buffing, but they laid a good amount of paint down. And after 15 years it still looks really good. I would say that it's all the prep work

I had MAACO in TN paint my black 96 vette. I bought the 18 hundred dollar top paint job, and they did a banner job with it. I bought the emblems at a Chevy dealership, and left those emblems with them, and they put the emblems on it.

Looks great. I too have a blue Camaro that got a Maaco job back in the early 2000s. Not the cheapest paint job, but I believe the next one up. Cost about $600. It's beyond faded now, but looked good for about a decade or so.

He had his own paint and body shop for years and can put down a hell of a paint job. When you’re dealing with a black car you REALLY need a good painter.

You did the hardest part man! Prep is the key to get a good paint job, I just paint my dads truck last year in the garage it has orange peel and we spend less than 2000 to get it done I’m not a professional but it came out nice it was my first time painting a full size crew cab truck , next time rent a paint both and do it your self just try with panels until you feel confident to spray, I wouldn’t pay 2600 just to get it sprayed because your already did the hardest part, nice car man!

I had a cherry red 95' Miata that Maaco repainted the same color. Nothing fancy just the basic paint job. Maaco did an outstanding job ! I sold the car to a resto-modder 5 years later and it still looked great.

The rear bumper spots aren't chips they painted over, it's pinholes, and it's also got fisheyes. That's where it likely had wax or ceramic coating on the old paintjob and they didn't use wax and grease remover and wipe it down good enough before sanding. Maaco paints about 1 car per hour in the paint booth. I was a body man at Maaco for a couple of years. The prep guys and painter are under extreme pressure to push cars through as fast as possible. They have to do a bare minimum of 20 to 25 cars per week to even be profitable so yea it just goes to show, as always you're gonna get what you pay for. 2400 sounds like a lot to most people but other shops will charge like 5000 and up for a base clear even if you prep it yourself. Most shops don't even do all over paint jobs though

I fell for the Maaco hype and got the same result with the orange peel and hell after a detail most areas of my car was not sanded. I regret not going a my local dealer which could have cost me $3-5 grand. I'm also planning a repaint in the future and if I go to a independent shop my rule would be if I don't see classic cars on the lot and examples of paint jobs, its no go and walk away.

I have a Maaco near me in Hagerstown MD and it surprisingly has very good reviews. I have never really heard good stories about Maaco. But my new to me 02 GMC needs the bedsides repainted/blended (since it had a little rust and was properly cut out and primed. I'm hoping it won't be too bad for them to paint it for me. Not looking for show quality either, but would like it too still look good.

I have NEVER had a good experience with auto body / paint businesses doing cars / light trucks, (4 or 5 times now) they all sucked. I had some heavy commercial trucks done and they were done well. My wife's Trans AM was at a paint / body place for 4 years! I had to make threats to get it back, then I took it to another place to finish it.Your doing most ALL the prep makes the most sense!

I just paid thirty two hundred dollars to have my black tru trading. They put on three coats of base four coats of clear. Give me my truck back for 1 month. Then they went sanding it. And polished. With a ten year warranty

Dud, I did the same thing when I took my 78 Cutlass to them. I took all the chrome off and lights, like you I left the tail lights in to drive it up there. The only thing I didn’t do was body word which for the most part was good. This was the early nineties when I used them. I’m preparing my 91 RS Convertible now I may give them another shot.

hoovie has gotten a few good maaco paint jobs. it all depends on the shop and who runs it. also deconstruction helps out alot. they don't have to worry about trim, lights, etc.

I had an 89 cavalier, that I turned into a z24 with the bumpers and ground effects. This was probably 20 years ago in Windsor Ontario Canada. At the time, I paid $800 for the car from the side of the road. I had it painted at maaco in Windsor. Cost around $800 if I remember correctly. I had it painted Ferrari red. It was single stage urathane. It turned out absolutely fantastic! They fixed little dings and stuff like that. I couldn't believe that they would, and I didn't expect them to. It didn't have any rust to fix. I did do alot of the disassembly but never sanding on it or anything. Can't remember if it had any orange peel, but probably nothing that noticeable. It was a great deal, but compared to the price of the whole car (same price), not a good deal lol. That is Canadian dollars.

When I went to my local Maaco in Miami, the sales rep saw how much care I put into my car and just straight up told me, "we won't be able to bring it to the standard that you probably expect, cause I see how you care for your car." So I just went to a pro paint place. Made a plan with the owner that I do some of the prep and all in all 1600 got my black gs300 repainted. Good deal 2 weeks of on and off prep work from me, and a lot of appreciation for what they do in the shop.

@@devianb think it was 1600 to go pro with my labor, I think maaco asked for 1500 to do the whole job lol. Pro also replaced the chrome trim on the front and rear bumpers, new emblems, wet sand and polish minor imperfections after clear, and were nice enough to sand and even clear coat my headlights which have looked great ever since.

I'm a body shop owner in south Ga, I don't do all over paint jobs because you'll go broke doing them. I use Diamont paint, 2600 won't pay for the materials to prime and paint that car. If I still did them, and did it from beginning to end, I'd charge around 7500 for everything he named off, and I'd be hating every minute of it. Sure some shade tree guy can do it in his garage at home and do it for 2500 bla bla bla, but in a shop, a REAL shop time is money and all obvers will cost you more money than you'll make in the long run. For the time it would take me to do this car for 7500, I can do 25 collision jobs and make 10x the money.

Mine was painted by MACCO in 2000. But like you I did some prep work and alot of post work. The hood pealed in the same spot as factory so I stripped and painted the hood last year. It's starting to peal around the t-top seals. But if you want a $7k paint job for $1000 that is how you do it. Also for a little extra you can get them to use PPG paint. But back in 2000 I opted for the single stage.

I worked for an ARCA series stock car driver/owner. He had a promotions company where we’d take cup cars to events. I had to take those cars to Maco occasionally. They always turned out bad even for race cars that are going to get covered in decals.

Man! I just went thru almost the exact same experience. Paint just was good. Not perfect but good. I also disassembled the entire car. Basically gave it to them like you said “on a silver platter.” They did ok but the service SUCKED!!!! Again, I knew what I was paying for. Just a spray booth and paint. They have to respray my trunk because they were lazy and said they’d take off my spoiler to paint it and they didn’t.🤦🏾‍♂️ Anyways, great review! I will be doing a follow up video on mine as well.

Depending on who is running the Maaco, the people there, the amount of prep/strip down you do, what you are willing to pay, your timeline, your expectations...all factors into what the results will be. The one in Bellevue, WA. did a very good job on my trucks (base/clear, the half-ton was tutone)- I did buy them lunch & bring them drinks, since we have mutual business friends in the area, as a sign of respect & appreciation. I also have a PGA promo Regal GS with some non-standard pieces (I bought directly from GM- long story) which is at a guy who is a perfectionist; that car will be perfect. It's a different set of expectations

I got my Foxbody from Maaco too! Blue as well the two tone blue and silver and I paid almost the same too but a little and I supplied the front and rear bumper! I get compliments for the paint but when you go up close you see some flaws.

You review helped me a lot and I new just washing my car and dropping it off was not going to cut it. When I looked at addition things I could do sanding down to the metal was mentioned. From trade school I knew that’s no easy or small job. They had recommended liquid paint remover then to start in sanding. I’ve watch this professionals paint cars and they went down to the metal plus other things and then sand and repeat several times. If I can get it down to the metal then as far as I’m going. Knowing what location does the best job is something I’m concerned about and it is very important. I want them to know like you that I love my car and a slop job was out of the question. Maybe seeing that I put work into the prep might help but some people have a talent for spraying. How to find that person at what location is where I’m stumped. Any ideas on that? I’m going from a very red 3000GT VR4 to a medium blue sort of like yours and even with door gams, trunk and under hood I have a lot of red still to cover and I no way to pull the engine to get down in there. The prep and finishing work are all the hard labor; the looks great so good results overall. When you get the motivation to prep the bumper, get it resprayed along with the nits but I wouldn't be in a hurry. Quality 100% carnuba wax (e.g. Zymol) seems to provide a much deeper shine than modern coatings; it does not last as long. You should paint the Astra to match (there was a Saturn Twilight Blue which was close to the z28 blue).

I feel your pain, had a 1973 El Camino in primer. I did as you did and removed everything including door handles. When I went to pick up the car they had painted black, not red as requested. Long story short car repainted and picked up. Close inspection showed dirt in the paint must have painted it in the body work area, paint booth full I guess, rush job. Typical macco work. Your car looks great.

Well I find that MACOO is the “ mash unit” of anything ,get in and get them out as fast as possible.Old saying get what you pay for. But the paint still looks good for what you payed for. Just a note on my 04 Tahoe i spent $2000 Canadian dollars just for two front fenders and rear quarter fenders replaced and patched the rear for that price. independent body shop did it and they match perfectly to the original paint with very little orange peel and fading. Had it done almost two years with southern Canada Salt and grime it still looks good and no rust from the patches yet.

I spent $3,000 each at Maaco on my two Chevy Nova's and they screwed up both cars to the point of where I had to take both of them back to separate Maaco shops. I would not suggest getting your car done by Maaco in Riverside County, Ca. Glad that they did yours up right though, looks awesome. I would love to think about getting my 88 Camaro repainted.

I took my 91 Trans Am to a local dealership in the year 2002 and they did a fabulous paint job for $1400 and prepped it themselves. Many years I would get compliments from random strangers who wanted to compliment the car. One friend on a Saturday night said to me "Dam^, you got that thing gleaming". A few weeks ago I just went back to the exact same dealership for a quote on a paint job for a 2002 Mustang GT Convertible. They said it would cost $3,500. And they do the prep work. This Maaco job where you had to do all the prep and assembly sounds way expensive to me.

Yea I had a pretty decent paint job by Macco, but I didn’t do any prep work. Sometimes you get lucky and there’s some actual car guys working there so when they see a nice car like my 2nd gen they get excited and spend extra time on it. The black paint lasted 15 years and at every carshow ppl would be shocked when I mentioned Macco. I had rust needed to be repaired so the car got painted again.

Im an autobody painter of 24yrs i use ppg envirobase paint system we have a special camera that takes pics of colors we dont have paint formulas for and it works well. Get that bumper fixed you will be fine

Thinking about doing something similar for my 1999 turbo Bug. Similar color too, so it's cool to see they can shoot metallic colors and not have it suck, lol. I know it's probably better to pay around $5k and get a real shop to do it but I'm "balling on a budget" as the youths say until I finish college lmao. Most of the factory paint is still there, I wish there was a way to just reshoot the clear where it's peeling... (Mostly on the roof and top of the hood) All my friends tell me I should just wrap it lol, but IDK. I'll at least need to get the front bumper painted since it's bare plastic right now... Cool car btw! Reminds me of the IROC concept car from Gran Turismo with those hood latches.

Your car looks so darn good 4 years later, is *not* because of Macco, but because *you* put in +40 hours of sweat equity into it before you handed over the keys. Even Macco would have a hard time farking that up. Honestly, given the amount of prep work you did (including the removal of parts), they should've only charged you for materials, paint and booth access!

I think most people dont choose the right colors. This is a nice color that looks good. Most dont do the correct prep work, which us the most expensive and challenging part of any paint job. Most people dont have the right expectations for price. If someone says they'll paint ur car for 500 n u have paint on the trim n complain thats on u. If u dont prep the car perfectly or pay a lot more, because they will do a full paint restoration and fix damage but ur going to pay for every single step, n if cheap out on any of those steps or do not prepare them correctly, u get what u got lol.

I had Macco paint my car years ago and repair some minor damage. the repair work was good, but the paint job really sucked, they forgot to add the catalyst to the paint, so it never cured. They had to strip the entire car and do it again.

For what it's worth, I had a body shop that my company at the time did diagnostics and repair for (friend of my boss) paint my car and put a new nose on it. They got the color wrong and managed to put an RS nose on my Z28. Never said anything to me about it until they dropped it off at the shop. That might have been the maddest I've ever been. My car looks like shit now. Paint bubbles everywhere and falling off the bumpers

Had my 92 sparyed by a former maaco in 2015 paid 2700, and while it looks good and turn heads it has a lot of issues. I stripped mine down as well. But didn't sand it because they would not warranty it and we're refusing to spary over my primer. They wanted to prep. Biggest regret of mine. And will have to be redone in the future. But you hit it on the head they did the same thing, sat for weeks on end and was rushed out suddenly in like a day. You get what you pay for at the end of the day

They painted my first car, a dodge neon... charged me 600 bucks. The paint as far as I know, still looks new. What I did was prepped the car myself. Wet sanded the fuck out of it for a week. And it never chipped
