As Mr. Spock once remarked “sauce for the goose”. I don’t know about the EU but in the US we have had antitrust laws for at least 100 years. Companies like AT&T and IBM were forced to open their platforms to their competitors. Companies like Apple and Microsoft benefitted from that. It is fine to hold a position against all antitrust laws and actions but not to apply the same laws only to some companies and let others get a free pass.

The problem lies in the potential consequences of allowing side loading on the number 1 phone in the U.S. When this happens, it opens the door for companies whose primary business model revolves around tracking and monetizing user data, such as Meta and Google. They can circumvent the App Store, which is known for its stringent privacy regulations enforced by Apple. A notable example is when Apple implemented changes that required apps to request user consent for tracking, resulting in a significant blow to Meta's stock. Meta, like other data-centric companies, would go to great lengths to avoid such privacy restrictions. The concern here is that we may end up with a situation similar to a cluttered Windows gaming PC, where different game launchers like EA, Epic Games, Riot Games, Blizzard, and more are scattered all over. This could lead to a fragmented and less secure user experience on our smartphones, which is far from ideal.

A great video excluding the part where FPT complained that Apple actually gave in to using a better port and how companies can actually be answerable to government oversight. Look, I agree that the recent EU consideration to simply tell Apple to open up its platform for 3rd party apps is straying from the actually good pro-repair laws and I get that this is the main point of the video. But to liken the USB-C port to something as nefarious as the beginning of the "giving a mouse a cookie" is stupid when it is, in every way, superior to the lightning port it replaced. Heck, Apple contributed to most of the engineering prowess behind USB-C. And 9:10-10:00 just sounds like every company when its trying to defend questionable practices - "Oh, this is how we work, why do we have to answer to laws?" EDIT: After having done some reading on the Digital Markets Act, I think FTP actually has less points going for him than before I did the reading. DMA applies equally to all big tech companies, includes clauses that prevent monetisation of data and uphold privacy (which is FTP and Apple's main complaint), and does some pretty important work in making sure bigger companies can't just toss start-ups off the technology train before they even get a good grip. It seems to me that FTP has just bought into Apple's eternal claims of superior privacy, although I may be reading DMA wrong.

@jpitt916 Жыл бұрын
What's weird is that if you look back, Apple implemented (and helped develop) USB-C fairly early, but for some reason they expected everyone to continue to use USB 2.0 speed Lightning cables. Even the iPad got USB-C 5 years ago!! It sure was nice when even if I didn't have a phone charger handy I could just plug in my iPad charger instead. They deleted the headphone jack. They have been anti right to repair. They refuse to implement RCS (rather than switching to SMS) when Apple users text anyone other than Apple users. Tim Cook snarkily told someone to buy their grandmother an iPhone. Surely if user security was a top priority they would be concerned about their users texting the majority of the world without iPhones. I applaud their refusal to break encryption for any government, or share private user data, but they left this huge vulnerability in place. The point I'm trying to make is they have given their haters SO much ammunition. They failed to think tactically and now it's coming back to bite them. I do not support what the EU is trying to do, even though I was glad to see USB-C in the iPhone a reality. Disclaimer: This is a multi-platform household. It hadn't started in 2021 by EU mandate. It was the voluntary agreement in 2009 that "standardized" USB connectors in phones (first micro-USB, then USB-C). Almost all adopted it, but Apple. That is why it is just Apple that needs to change now; that is why it had to be a mandate. The rest of the market adopted standard USB connectors a way ago. There is a major flaw in the USB-C line in this video. Apple hasn't been the only one targeted by this regulation, and it didn't start in 2021. The idea is way older than that. Do you remember the time before the iPhone? Phone manufacturers like Nokia, Ericson, Siemens, Motorola, and so on all had their own charging/data ports. In 2009, the biggest mobile phone producers of that time made an agreement with the EU to use a common charging port, the micro-USB. Since around 2011, most of the market has adopted standard micro-USB connectors. No hard regulation, no enforcement. Almost all but Apple ... Instead, Apple came with the Lightning. Basically, the proprietary two-sided USB 2.0 with added accessory identification and licensed by Apple. Technically, there is almost no benefit to the user over micro-USB (apart from the two-sided design). However, there is a huge benefit for Apple - license fees and a higher price tag. Anti-customer behaviour in my book. Also, it was a bit funny to hear from Apple that the USB-C mandate would hold innovation when they are the ones still using USB 2.0 (in their connector). As for the sideloading, it is just an option. If you want to sideload, you will be able to do so in a few clicks. Android does have sideloading, but it doesn't mean that most users use it. We will see how it will go - the EU doesn't like to get screwed, and this halfway compliance usually ends up with fines.

I think this argument is tapping into people's "big government" fear, and it is a little far-fetched to say the least. On the argument of opening up iphone access to competitors' versions of Apple's App Store, no consumer is being FORCED to use those same non-apple app stores. In other words, just because the EU would like to give Apple consumers the CHOICE of accessing apps from competitors does not mean that apple consumers MUST use the non-Apple app stores.

With the introduction of USB-C, it's been fantastic to have a wider array of options for port compatibility. Being able to sideload opens up numerous possibilities. I'm currently enjoying playing retro games on my iPhone, all thanks to the AltStore loophole, a feat that wouldn't be achievable without sideloading. It has the potential to unlock various opportunities and might even entice Android users to consider giving Apple a try, which can be a positive development. I'd say, "Open the gates!"

Just by having the option to sideload doesn't mean you have to. This can also be beneficial for users looking to get more out of their phone, for example, if someone wanted to install an emulator and play classic games such as Gameboy games on their phone, they'd have the option to do so. This can actually be beneficial to smart users, so I think it's unfair to assume that this would be bad for everyone, and it may even help some people become more tech savvy by introducing options that weren't previously available on their phone. Don't blame the phone for getting a virus: blame the user for downloading it. Who knows it may even teach some people accountability. I also think that this won't impact people that won't want it to, for example, android gives you the option to sideload, but it gives you a warning message before downloading something off that internet, so if a user doesn't feel comfortable with the download, they can decline the download. This does not force the user into downloading unwanted/malicious content onto their phone, but rather opens up the platform for those that feel restricted by it.

While I typically don't comment when I disagree, I must say that, as an Apple customer living in the EU, it's important to consider why these changes can also be beneficial. The video went downhill pretty fast, very uninformed and full of contradictions. It's not like someone buys an iPhone only to find out that it doesnt have USB C and they were tricked into thinking it has one. Literally the best FPT video I’ve ever watched! I think you raise amazing points, and the fact of the matter is, the consumer should get to choose with their money, and not be pushed around by the government. If the EU wants to make their own phone company with all their requirements, they should just do that, instead of forcing other companies to comply with what they think consumers want. Theres a fine line between forcing a company to operate ethically (like just not using slave/child labour) and forcing them to do whatever you want because they’re winning. Also the clips of Steve really showed what Apple’s core values were and how this essentially targets those directly.

I love your videos Jon and I’m a big fan of Apple, but this time I have to say that I don’t agree with you and I believe you leave out too much relevant information. You make it look like the EU wants to take Apple down with rules, regulations and restrictions. Apple has indeed always been a stubborn company and was the only tech company that refused to switch all of their products to USB-c (even though they did want to switch some products to USB-c for some reason, because otherwise the product wasn’t ‘Pro’ enough?). The EU simply wants to prevent companies like Apple from having too much of a monopoly when it comes to things like App Store. Other companies and developers can hardly compete with Apple, because Apple decides everything inside the App store and therefore also inside the iPhone. Since billions of people are using iPhones these days, developers and companies simply have to comply and accept Apple’s condition and overpowering market position. As for USB-c, a lot of consumers and tech-enthusiasts showed excitement when the rumours starting floating around that Apple would switch to USB-c, even you, so don’t act like you never wanted this. USB-c and opening up to third party app stores are needed to save the environment, create more convenience for the consumer and create healthy competition to the big tech companies which also always benefits the consumer. Don’t interpret this message badly, please. I like your videos and will continue to do so, but I just wanted to share my thoughts and concerns on this video. Keep up the good work Jon!

@daveed_ Жыл бұрын
In contrast, that is actually bad for you. Let's scale this up a little... Would you ask them to force electric car companies to make the batteries replaceable by you the user, without any tools required? Safety in technology is best when sensitive parts are tightly enclosed out of prying hands. This is why you gas cylinders have thicker walls than your regular water- bottle, or tighter caps too. Humans really cannot comprehend scale and I perfectly understand. Throw this deep into the future, you are going to find out that leaving the battery more exposed is actually bad for you as the user. The best way is to make them bring down the price for repairs and replacement parts. It shouldn't cost more than 10% of the original unit value during assembly. But the moral of this particular video is that it is actually wrong to force companies to evolve out of their core values all because you want to exercise control or something. I have friend who will never consider Apple as a primary device.

Apple purposely close iMessages system to other phone users (green bubbles are SMS based) because they will sell more iPhones that way. If it was a proprietary tech or something, that would be ok, but there is plenty of other apps that do exactly the same as iMessages, even better apps, but since iMessages is the standard by a long shot, the people will be resistant to change by default. Nobody worth their pants in the software world would dare argue otherwise Apple doesn't let us, the actual consumers and an OWNER of one of their devices, preform basic admin functionalities and specifically disallows the end user from being able to control iOS to any significant degree w/o zero day exploits of the software that they technically own a license to. The issue is that by the inherit design of their lockdown layer, like only allowing executable applications be downloaded from their AppStore, though the underlying software would otherwise, is the mechanism to how they've been found guilty of anti-competitive practices, and this is undeniable. This is certainly not good for Apple, but a move they had to make and will have to adapt to in order to remain relevant (which they'll almost certainly be lol, but definitely different from how their devices run the software layer now)

If the government was forcing people to shoot you in the face, would you be ok with that?". LMAO of course not. How is this a valid argument?

I disagree with this. There's multiple things that I understand but there's also multiple that I'm completely kind of dumbfounded on. USB-C was a standard that was code, developed by Apple. almost every product. Apple makes now has USB-C except for like two products. Sorry mate but you bit the apple

I agree with this going back to the ship part. The “Keel” of the ship it’s the main support for it all. Changing the keel of a ship means it’s not the original ship anymore because don’t you have to take all the parts off the ship to reach the keel? The keel is basically the core of Apple what they made. Damaging that part means the ship will sink it won’t even make it to its next destination if it’s crack all the way through from the middle. The EU is actively going after that and to severely damage it. If Tim Cook has common sense Apple was created in America foreign nations should not govern how a company runs and I’m fully behind on that being a power trip to force a company. The USB type C in my opinion was a long awaited change for them to ditch lightning. They never changed it or altered it to keep up with Type C. The company in my opinion was beating a dead horse and needed to find better innovative ways to improve on that. I’m glad the EU gave them a push. They took a quarter and Apple allowed it and now they are trying to take a mile. Going back to where Apple was made. I agree they should threaten the EU with not selling in the EU anymore. “Grab his dick and Twist it” from that awesome meme.

I will be fine without apple products. EU should start a fight againsy Americas ridiculous capitalism that is now destroying us all. We have so many other phones and good products so he will definitely lose a lot of consumers with thay

Okay a lot to unpack, but lets take on the conclusion. First of all, why are you claiming Apple doesnt want to change when they indeed changed from desktop computing to ubiquitous computing? You also brought up a video about the Apple colours, where are they now? Second of all, since when was the EU a competitor of Apple? Please mention a phone, laptop, watch, goggles, etc. created and sold by the EU? Third, simple economics lets anyone know that being the only one on top does not promote sustainable growth, that's why monopolies are heavily regulated. Promotion of competition is ACTUALLY healthy.

You have covered an extremely important topic! This is indeed a slippery slope. And it is not just the EU, other countries are seeing what just happened. Expect such regulations dictating even the implementation going forward from EU and other countries😟 It will not be the Apple Car or Vision pro, it may be the stance Apple takes on this that decides Tim Cook's legacy before he retires.

It's really not that bad. around 2010, all phone manufacturers were deciding to settle on just one connector for their new models (to avoid regulations from the EU). They decided on micro USB. Except Apple. They announced lightning. They are the reason why there is a need for this regulation. To sideloading: Imagine windows without sideloading. You can only download programs from the windows store. Would be pretty restrictive, right? People couldn't customise their software if they needed to. Mac also allows sideloading, resulting in millions of little applications that are designed to help you and to solve specific problems, made by anything different than huge companies who can afford getting their apps approved by apple.

They are gatekeeping, if I switch today from android to apple I have to repurchase everything that is not transferable again on the app store and they make sure that you only use their Marketplace I mean imagine you buying a house but when you buy that house they tell you, you can only shop at the walmart down the street not publix or whole foods just walmart how would you feel not only that why can't I get my apps straight from the developer or be able to install my own apps that's why it's such a pain in the ass to install Netflix on iPhone
@jacksonville4932 Жыл бұрын
100% Facts. Gate keeping is the NICE way to put it. They make it IMPOSSIBLE to transfer apps, but thankfully allow regular files to be transferred. Regardless like you said, you’d have to rebuy EVERYTHING that came with your phone if you buy an android. And no, I don’t want to buy 2 fucking phones. Apple should be the first company to make gatekeeping redundant, and they would make WAY more when everyone knows they can upgrade to iPhone but it will support android apps, or android backup

I have watched half the video and I do not at all like where this is going. Let's not pretend that Apple or Facebook or Microsoft care in any way about their consumers. Their loyalty lies with their shareholders and stakeholders. The lightning port was horrible in many ways, locking the consumer into the apple ecosystem, it's horrible design which made it susceptible to breakages, not to mention the environmental problems of electric waste. It is peek Apple fanboy deliusion to think that this is in any way shape or form bad. Not to mention your debating style. The metaphor with the mouse and the cookie is stupid and I could make the opposite argument where apple is the mouse, the consumer is the boy and us letting them get away with their shitty design choices is giving them the cookie. Whats next? Making their iphones break after 5 years? Oh wait they already did that... Update: I have watched the entire video now and my suspicions were right. I do not feel the need to further edit my comment.

Not a commenter for the most part, but this was a fantastic video. I work in compliance dealing with these types of regulations and this was a super well executed video. Bravo, Jonny P!
