This is one of the best interviews on Film Courage. Houston Howard gave some great and practical advice that’s relevant for creators today. Rather than feeding into the old outdated advice and relying on hope (to break into Hollywood), his interview details how to break out of bubbles that are self imposed or imposed by old industry standards. Thank you Film Courage for the great content.

This interview was so validating to hear. I realized long ago that there was no path for me in traditional filmmaking, so I decided to take a completely different route. I used stop motion animation to tell the stories I wanted to, and now I'm about to release a stop motion feature film that takes place in a cinematic universe I've expanded with fans. We have a podcast, a wiki, and I'm currently working with an artist to make a comic book. So excited for what the future holds.

I love the title of this and how it’s “Creators” instead of “Filmmakers” because filmmakers are creators at the end of the day. And how he explains the new reality of the film business it’s just so amazing to be encouraged to branch out in other media formats for the sake of benefiting a film adaptation. Nothing but creating more and nothing but more fun ahead!! To attack the market I’m going ham with KZbin first making “cinematic business documentaries” using stock clips and narration. Funny enough, alot of people I’ve shared my first video with have suggested making a podcast out of it. Podcast is coming next, making time to learn animation after that, a book series, all of the mediums/formats will be explored and conquered. For the sake of creativity! 👏👏💪💪❤️❤️

Fun Fact, something of the sorts is happening in Argentina. Hernan Casciari is a storyteller and a writer who created an IP out of himself and the publisher he co created called Orsai. Now he managed, together with the team at Orsai, to crowdfund an entire movie with almost two thousands producers. The movie is almost done shooting and a series based on some short stories is on the way. So with persistence and some charisma it can be done.

The business model will mirror that of the music industry. More doing things on your own. Not replacing the studio. Just like record companies aren't going anywhere. But the ability to get something created without the studio will become easier. To what he's saying about movies being based on a book. There's a Film Courage interview with who I think is a screenwriter, who gave his opinion on whether hollywood has run out of ideas because of all the reboots and remakes that are being done. Who said he thought it had to do with fear of new ideas not working out and hollywood playing it safe, instead of running out of new ideas. But when I started paying attention to the credit list at the beginning and end of movies and saw how many were based on a previously written book by someone other than who wrote the screenplay, I realized that hollywood never had many ideas in the first place. They get their ideas from authors of books.

If it fails, it's their fault. If a producer plumps for an original idea, and the movie fails, it's his fault. Even if everyone else on production is at the top of their game. 17:50 "There's so much stuff out there!" Absolutely 100% true. The market (especially the web market) is completely saturated with stuff (most of it garbage). " And it's way too competitive!" Absolutely 100% not true. I'd say 70-75% of the stuff circulating out there is no-quality, consumerish, watch- me- once- and- then- throw- me- in- the- waste-basket rubbish. Some of it may be popular, but it doesn't mean its competitive. It's way too competitive only when it's coming out of powerful all-encompassing Studios and totally out of the grasp of Indipendent Filmmakers, who could never compete with that high level of specialized artistry, expertise, resources and production values. So you see, in the end it would be wise to be able to get inside them and work with them if you can. The alternative (as an emerging Indie) is a life of back-breaking work that could lead you nowhere. I know lots of guys who woke up in their mid 60s, asking themselves "Ah, if only I had done this! I shoulda, coulda, woulda..." Well, It's a conundrum, I know!

I actually intend to make a series of music videos that, after I thought about it, came out to 47 minutes of straight action with no talking. It could easily be transitioned into a real movie afterwards. But I am not intending to do that. I am actually building a potential million/billion dollar business based off of a product that can be applied to any gasoline vehicle to drastically boost mileage and torque to cut the usage of gasoline down by half or more (possibly double the mileage for some vehicles). I am literally building a real business, and the video series is about the inventor dealing with hitmen, and that could potentially be a real movie. The end goal is that I make so much money I can fund all of my own videos. That has been a dream I have moved towards for over 6 years now. The days are coming

The lord of the rings is an interesting example of IP being purchased because of the massive brand recognition and loyal fan base it came with. Its an interesting example because once Amazon had the IP rights, they promptly departed from the kind of storytelling that established LOTR as a story that fans, as well as general audiences cared about. So essentially, Amazon bought a fan base, and then crapped all over the story. When this predictably drew criticism and a withdrawal from viewership, the audience was blamed for being the real problem. The same can be said for Star Wars after Disney purchased it.
