Unironically yes. Libertarians don't want to limit the government because they believe the government is inherently tyrannical. They want to limit it because they believe the government prevents the strong from dominating the weak. The end goal has always been strong dominating the weak and limiting the government just a tool for that goal. That is why if a different easier path opens up, such as by gaining the power to subvert the government into supporting the strong in dominating the weak, they will take it. Looked at through this lens of analysis we see why this turn of events is not as surprising as many seem to think it is.

In theory it's like modernized feudalism rather than fascism. In practice it seems like there are no true libertarian ideologues and it's always just used cynically to weaken democratic institutions and strengthen the right-wing group that claims they are libertarian. Put differently, ancaps always succumb to their religion of human greed which is why their failure of an ideology tends to end up in stronger state control rather than weaker. Also why the holy "free market" can't and doesn't exist (monopolies are way more efficient for those with money/power).

milei is going for a short, sharp shock that is analogous to the volcker method for taming inflation, which i'd give about a 5/10. there are better ways to do this. milei's version is even more extreme so will have even more extreme consequences. let's talk about his supposed realism: in discussing his "realistic" options he is practicing disinformation by omission. rather than address those points, let's reinsert what's missing: modern economies are trickle-up - wealth accumulates in the hands of the super-rich and corporations. so in order to beat inflation you have to tax the rich . but governments still need to issue currency so rather than hand it to the banks and offer low interest rates which is just handing money directly to the rich, a government should employ many people at the bottom on infrastructure projects and government workers and welfare payments like UBI. that money is then spent in the economy where it can make its way up to rich where it can be taxed back out of the system, improving the country for all and taming inflation. milei is impoverishing the nation, slashing public services and redirecting the justice system to police speech and away from fighting corruption, which will at least make inflation harder to fight if not actually supercharging it. his magical thinking regarding how money works may succeed in a limited way but the externalities will be terrible for Argentina - a bad solution that may still work, but not optimal. in order to thrive, create jobs, receive investment etc countries need stability. milei is the opposite of that, he's a wrecking ball candidate put forward by capitalism to punish the argentinian people for daring to hope for any way out of their economic woes

Just a little of political context for those who don't live in Argentina. Why would many people be ok with this protocol. And i am not saying you have to be ok with it, but you need to know a couple of things. Groups that cut roads here often cut bridges, by several hours. That often means, for example, that people who are from other cities and go to work to the capital will be late to their job and their homes. A lot of people takes 2-3 buses every day, they spend 1-2 hours each time. Some companies or people won't hire you because of that. Often the roads and bridges are cut without any warning in order to produce a bigger impact. Sometimes they are cut only when people are returning home. Working class in Argentina commute. They cannot just go creative and find other roads. That means for many going back home, eating, sleeping 6 hours and back to work. You can ask people in Retiro station what they think about unions and piequeteros. Unions here are mostly part of peronism, the previous goverment. If you compare the strikes and protest last decades you will find a political pattern, even when the country was getting worse and worse and people suffered a lot these last years unions remain mostly passive and silence. They did complained when the party didn't gave them enough political seats in the congress. Many groups are client political groups. Some of the people that cut the roads get more money for mostly doing nothing and going to political meetings than the people that are affected by the cuts. Middle class are often the most progressive part of argentinian society. What is left of that. They have cars or work from home. Working class is reactionary, regardless the political spectrum. A big part of Milei base is low working class. Sorry for the wall text. Argentina is very complex. We have been suffering for decades, despite some part of the world noticing we exist right now. All the best.

That is true. And it is also true that when people support "shooting the nwords" (as Milei's supporters say on social media) to free the streets, none of them asks "why are they blocking the streets"? Do not forget that a lot of the reasons as to why they are totally ok with mauling the protesters is because they always wanted that. There is a lot of racism, and the working class is posponed and divided, thanks to Peronism, which now tied its own rope and we will all suffer because of it.

I am not fond of considering social media as source because everybody there is awful. But there is a toxic component on part of Milei base. The thing is we live in a frontier mentality, I live in San Isidro, a middle class neighboorhood -for Argentina standarts is like luxury. I have a friend who live in Lanus and he is way more angry about all that stuff than i. The sad part is nobody seems to care about why the roads are cut. Under kirchnerismo they let them protest, let the pressure and streess aliviate a little with that, but didn't change a thing. Anyway, talking about all this is really sad@@Blunderbussy

Not an Econ major but from what I understand there was a huge discrepancy between the official rate for the peso set by the government and the “real” or effective rate set by the market and to maintain the official rate the government has been spending their reserves like crazy which was leading them on a path toward defaulting. This is a desperate attempt by Milei to avoid default but who knows if it’ll even work at this point but he’s not just doing it to favor exporting mega corporations, it might be the only option he sees to prevent the country from defaulting. Just thought I’d add that.

I don't know why anyone acts surprised about this. Right-Libertarians tend to view authoritarianism as 'when the government does stuff and the more stuff it does the more authoritarian it is (this applies to everything they dislike like communism, socialism, "fascism", etc.)', so they think the less stuff it does the more "libertarian" it is. It isn't about WHO does it, towards WHO, what it does specifically and HOW. For that it would be necessary to analyze power structures and hierarchies (something their contradictory ideology can't). Shrinking the size of government means getting rid of "bloat" and "bureaucracy" (aka public and socially oriented stuff). There is nothing to measure the power and force it exerts, only the quantity. This action by Milei isn't a hypocritical/inconsistent move that right-libertarians can hand-wave away as "not real *real capitalism*". This is the inevitable conclusion of their ideology. Quoting Saul Newman on minarchism: "The problem with the minimal state such as that advocated by Nozick, is that it is never minimal in practice: on the contrary, a state which preoccupies itself with security functions - military and police force - is in fact highly interventionist, intrusive and authoritarian. The libertarian minimal state always ends up as a Leviathan state." Even right-berts that advocate for statelessness can't help but justify private authority. Quoting Rothbard himself here: "Again: UNLEASH THE COPS to clear the streets of bums and vagrants. Where will they go? Who cares? Hopefully, they will disappear"

As an Argentinian, I find it amusing to hear someone misrepresent the situation this badly. Protestors here are quite different from other countries. They are full-fledge organizations with huge problems of corruption (among other shady stuff), who block roads and streets for days at a time, preventing people from free circulation. In Argentina, freedom of movement around public spaces (roads as a prime example) is a right which is clearly stated in the Constitution. Protests prevent people from working, studying, visiting family and friends, and even there have been cases of people dying because the ambulance could not reach them when they were in critical condition. In conclusion, Argentina's situation is very very very complex. Calling Milei a fascist and making claims based only on news articles from the US is dumb and reductive. Not surprising from Vaush though...

Do you think salaries are going to go up to match inflation? This is the piece of the puzzle that I think is missing with Milei´s scheme to reset the economy. People in the middle and lower classes are going to be squeezed, and I dont see how that works out.
@astrid4505
@astrid4505 8 ай бұрын
@@TheMageesa The inflation is an issue, that much is true. We are all being affected by it, especially the lower classes that cannot afford to save money by changing pesos to dollars (something which is the norm of you are middle or upper class here). Sadly we don't have much of a choice though, the source of our inflation is mostly caused by the huge deficit of the state. There isn't enough money, so the government prints more and more, or gets more and more debt. Milei's economic policies are sadly necessary to fix the issue that has been affecting our economy for at least 80 years. Even economists that would have worked with the government if the leftist party would have won said that they would be forced to do what Milei is currently doing. Generations of economic downturn and disasters do not get fixed overnight, especially since most of the current increase in inflation was caused by the previous government's poor economic decisions. Edit: Also take into account that even though Milei's objective is to combat the state deficit, he actually increased aid for people in financial need, and said that the Ministry of Welfare (Ministerio de Capital Humano) was the only one that would be allowed to operate on a deficit.

Oil and equivalents is bought and sold in USD. This will double the base cost of fuel, electricity, and the manufacture of goods based on oil. Which is more or less everything. This is a most excellent deal for rich peeps that have overseas accounts and/or assets denominated in dollars because it doubles the amount of capital (think factories, etc) that they can purchase. This is a massive transfer of wealth to the richest in society.
@TheMageesa
@TheMageesa 8 ай бұрын
I agree with the massive transfer to the rich, but on the ground (Iḿ down in Arg) the inflation is eating up a lot of the dollar spending power. Big purchases were always made in dollars, and the black market (aka blue) dollar has surprisingly held steady through the deflation of the peso. People are stocking up on staples, but theres a general feeling of buckle-up resignation to hard times ahead (and most people have been through this before).

I don’t see the problem with removing protesters from the roads (not other places) and seizing sticks (context implies it’s meant as a weapon), but deporting people and recording faces is pretty concerning. Also, what’s wrong with dollarization in this case? It seems like a reasonable response to hyperinflation to me. Are there better solutions?

THIS IS WHY YOU/WE MUST ALWAYS HOLD THEM LITERALLY TO WHAT THEY SAY! THAT WAY WE CAN NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR **OUR** ACTIONS! Holding somebody LITERALLY to what they say is the FOUNDATION of REDUCTIONISM! Since Milei is an Anarchist, that means everyone can do wtf they want. That means Atheists can do wtf they want and burn down the stupid churches that don't pay taxes. That means Just Stop Oil activists do not have to go to court if they don't want. That means Antinatalist Animal Rights Vegans (AARVs) are free to blow up factory farms and free all animals. And worker unions are free to take over corporations/businesses. Guns for Greens! Guns for Worker Unions! Total Anarchy/Freedom can and should be used by Leftists, Liberals, Anarchists, Communists, Antinatalists, Atheists, Worker Unions, JUST like Alex Jones said! Alex Jones spoke out over and over and over and over and over against the IDIOCY of politicians talking as if there were only "one" political dimension, with only "two" ends. In spite of Alex Jones being a MASSIVE LYING HYPOCRITE, that does NOT change the fact that he is 100% right on this point. Animal Rights Vegans fighting to blow up and destroy all factory farms and free the innocent animals inside and force people to go vegan and force cats and dogs to eat biocultured meat instead are the most ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT of all.

Most people don't realize the Eurodollar is the actual international settlement system. The USD inside America are the only 'real' dollars in existence, the rest (about 70% of global supply) are formulated through free floating exchange rates with other currencies.

@@lavellelee5734British banking institutions are the most corrupt organisations ever and has handled more money that would make its way to dictatorships than the cia could dream of and were encouraged to by those like Margaret Thatcher and even Labour Governements. In the modern era, London is now the money laundering center for russian oligarchs like Roman Abramovich and such oligarchs own vast swathes of real estate here and also "invest" and "donate" to the conservative party indirectly through their wives, family and friends. Ironically the loudest voice saying to help the Ukrainians in British politics was also the one paid most by Russian money and had the closest ties to Putin (Boris Johnson).
