The best thing I heard from the anesthesiologist before I went under was (and it’s so simple) ‘we promise to take good care of you’. The amount of relief I felt with those simple words was before I fell asleep was immeasurable.

I know from so many years of surgery that I'll wake up throwing up if I don't get some Zofran or something. One surgery I told the anesthesiologist that and she refused to give me something for the nausea. I wasn't going to fight with her, she's the educated one, but it was pretty annoying to wake up sick when it could have been avoided. She apologized to me, but I don't understand why she refused. It sure feels better when you feel listened to and heard. I would hope I don't have that same issue if and when I need more surgery.

Omg, I always had a hard time getting up and speaking. All through school. Once there was a miracle-I was next to speak and there was a fire drill. However, the last time I did at the family reunion, I actually came out and said how I hate speaking in front of groups, I calmed down, and I did fine. I think it helped that I was with my family.

My gallbladder removal surgery was the most traumatic experience i jave ever had. They forgot to give me any type of nerve calming medicine before surgery and definitely let them know how scared i was and what meds i was on for that. I went under crying hysterically and woke up the same and in so much pain. I was told they couldn't do anything more for me and i would feel better after i get up and dressed and go home. It was horrible. And come to find out, i didn't even need to have it out.

In my opinion, if l have confidence in my doctor's, I am much more relaxed in the OR. I have had 2 cervical spine operations. Love my neurosurgeon, can ask him anything, and trust him with my life. I broke both my tib and fib bones in my leg. Excruciating pain. Only arrived at the hospital 7 hours after my accident. Did not know my orthopaedic surgeon but he put my mind at ease with the anaesthetist when they saw me the next morning of surgery. On morphine l didn't really care what happened.

years ago when insurance companies allowed for admission the day prior to surgery. It was protocol to give a preop IM injection. I worked with a old school anesthesiologist who ordered a preop IM injection of Demerol/ Vistaril / Atropine about an hour before the scheduled surgery. She also ordered valium with a sip of water, and maalox. Ok Dr now you are cringing saying this is too much medicine., but the pt was relaxed ( not overmedicated btw,) and I promise you her patients NEVER had post op nausea

@21550spurs I do remember that preoperative IM injection during all of my childhood surgeries in the 90s. I think I remember one nurse saying that it was to relax me, but ha, I was afraid of the hip injection. I also do remember having nausea and vomiting after surgery with local, which I find curious cuz I had so many surgeries without n/v under general.

How can an anesthesiologist watch your vitals and the reaction of the patient to the medication while the patient is under sedation type medication while they perform the procedure? An example would be an Oral Surgeon who does dental procedures, cosmetic procedures etc. I woke up during a dental procedure by an Oral Surgeon who was preforming the procedure. I remembered and automatically went into defense mode by raising my hands to stop what I felt was a harm toward me.

Easy. I woke up before my surgery was over. that's why I want more or longer anesthesia. I'm a nurse, and the O.R. records were illegible. So I don't know what I was given, or for how long. No fun, being able to hear what's going on, feeling everything, and not being able to move at all, especially when I CAN'T BREATH ON MY OWN. Having the surgeon tell me that I'm too heavy, that I have to help move myself off of the table onto the stretcher to go to PACU.

I have been treated with Spravato (esketamine) for my depression and PTSD. A car accident where I was a passenger and the person who hit us died. She was successful at committing suicide. That was a very sad and very difficult experience. I have had a lot of other very traumatic experiences in my life. Losing my brother, 6 years ago now, was the most difficult one for me. I and so sorry, Lucy, that you have experienced that. I have treatment resistant depression and Spravato (esketamine)has been an amazing treatment for my depression. I just had my 5th spinal surgery on Monday. It was an ALIF at L5-S1. I struggled when I was waking up for anesthesia. I don’t remember but they told me I was in a lot of pain and I wasn’t calming down. They used ketamine after awhile and apparently it helped pretty quickly which was very interesting to me and I am so grateful it did helps so much. I’m in so much pain 5 days later but I really wanted to be home and I was able to come home Wednesday. I didn’t have nausea from the medications but I did have severe pain and I continue to. We are trying to figure out what more we can do for my pain at home. I have PT and a nurse coming to my house. We are trying to work things out. I’m trying really hard to use as little medication as I need but I have also have some really tough experiences with past surgeries and having an abscess on my spine. Two surgeries in a just over week because of the abscess on my spine and also meningitis. I had a fusion at L4-L5 at that point, 1.5 years ago. So all of this pain after my fusion at L5-S1 is definitely cause for anxiety for me right now. I’m grateful that esketamine has helped my depression so much and I was very grateful ketamine helped so much after surgery with some acute pain. Right now my heart rate is really high and my bp has been really high but I have recently had a full cardiac work up and I don’t have any chronic cardiac issues so they think this pain is causing the high BP and high heart rate. I haven’t been able to sleep either. I am hoping we can figure something out soon so I can rest.

People, Dr. Kevah: End goal is to fix and benefit the patient to go back to normal physical, and spiritual, function of the Body. So, whatever we go through to get back our normal life and bodily function, it must be done sometimes with the doctor of medicine and this begins with Anesthetic to the pain...too bad we do not allow in America USA Chinese Medicine's historically proven Acupuncture to close off the Pain and do the operation pain free.
