I havent used purigen. I think my method is just lots of healthy plants and good filter. I have a small black water setup that i like the tanins in from the mopani wood. But its not too dark. Awesome video. Always appreciated.

Just a small correction: depending on the amount of floating particles or tannins produced in your tank Purigen might last only a couple days until loaded. I recently had selected a very big (compared to the volume of tank) but questionable root which stained Purigen to a dark brownish colour within only 48 hrs and rendered it useless without giving it a good bleach. Of course had I watered the root a long time in advance (four weeks if I remember correctly) before I introduced it to the tank.

Question: when you added the Purigen to your filter, you put it right at the filter inlet. Wouldn’t it be better off on the outlet side so the large particles hit the mechanical filtration first, instead of clogging the Purigen?

In this particular tank I don't have much that would get caught in it by ways of debris, but if you have a tank that does have debris to get caught then I'd place it lower down in the filter chamber.

Seachem purigen is just synthetic charcoal. Use charcoal, it does the exact same thing for a fraction of the price.

I’ve found it’s also very helpful to make sure the fish aren’t plotting an escape and messing with your filtration. It does happen, watch the documentary Nemo if you don’t believe me.

You can also use Filter Fiber and Poly Filter. Both are really good for removing particles from the water. However Poly filter is also a good indicator on what is going on with the water because it changes color based on issues in the water.

You are absolutely right... In my years of experience the best way to get crystal clear water and NO TANNIN is to have a SEACHEM PURIGEN. No need to hassle with water changes and risk the water chemistry. Amazing aquascape, mate. Keep it up!

Purigen is truly epic. Some friends said chuck it after being bought and I was so upset. But having a 30-p with naturally collected wood that leaches tons of tannins, Purigen clears it up within a day!

Why don't you add what you know about preparing Purigen for the next round? I do it this way: -cleaning bag under running water -pure! bleach for 24 hrs -rinsing thoroughly under running water -detox for 12 hrs (e.g. using Seachem Prime) -rinsing under running water and soaking for 6 hrs Obviously you are better off with two bags of Purigen at hand. You can replace the detox part by using a mix of vinegar/tap 50/50 with no adverse effects on the live stock to the best of my knowledge.

@@detlefh.7090 Nice process, what about the last process stated on seachem regeneration to soak for 4 hours with a solution containing 2 tablespoons of buffer per cup of water (Discus Buffer®, Neutral Regulator®).

@@marcusshhiew5047 Did not do that because my tap is super hard GH 17 KH 12 and my thinking is this might buffer the remaining acids in Purigen well enough (I am no chemist, if I am wrong pls correct me). Also, have been reading that many skip this last step.
