Staraya Ladoga (Old Ladoga), formely known as just Ladoga. One of the oldest settlements in Russia, founded in 753 where Russia itself was founded. It is located in 570km northwest from Moscow on the bank of Volkhov river, not far from its confluence with Lake Ladoga.
According to the Chronicles, Gostomysl, the elder leader of the tribes of Ilmen Slavs, invited the Varangian Rurik to reign on the territory of a contemporary northwestern Russia where lived such a slavic and finno-ugric tribes as Ilmen Slavs, Krivichis, Chud, Merya and Ves.
Prince Rurik came to Ladoga in 862 and started the process of unification of those Slavic and Finno-ugric tribes into the one single state - the state of Russia.

Your ability to articulate the complex, nonsensical english language is amazing. Viewing the natural environment with long lasting houses that could tell stories, along with the historical lessons makes this my fave video, so far. Any archaeology digs or finds would be great. This work is sure shifting the western viewers in how much more healthy & beautiful Russians and Russia are.

I have watched this video several times. I am writing my second comment now because I forgot to mention something very important. The selection of the background music is brilliant. Alexander Borodin's Prince Igor, Polovtsian Dances. Borodin's best work. And, the most significant historic Russian opera. That music is the most relevant for this bit of history of Staraya Ladoga. Thank you, Sergey, for sharing your knowledge with us. You continue to be the best.

Sergey, beautifully presented. I HAVE A QUESTION: In the early '90s i was with a group on a cruise ship from St. Petersburg to Moscow. We were in Lake Lagoda, stopped at Petrozavorsk(sp?), Valaam, Kostroma, etc. We even saw that lone bell tower above a submerged town. I am not sure that i see places for such ships to dock, but do cruise ships go there? I kept looking at this trying to remember if i had seen it. Hard to remember. A few things look possible. Might the ship have gone there.? Thank you..

I just returned from my journey to the history of Russia. A journey that took me to the years before the foundation of Russia in 862. Staraya Ladoga once was a vital place. Sadly, now, it is only medieval history. Ancient churches, fortress, and museums. Except for the beautiful nature that continues to be alive. Comprehensive narrative, though it left me a bit sad. Exceptional skilful filming that brought beauty to our living room. I will never forget Staraya Ladoga because of Sergey's video collection on this unique (now) village and previously an important trading port and first capital of Russia. And, if I ever travel to Russia, I will start my trip from Staraya Ladoga. Thank you, Sergey, for your dedicated hard work.

Staraya Ladoga is filled with legends and tales. Here is one of them... In one village on the shore of Ladoga, there lived a guy from a poor family and a girl from a wealthy one. They fell in love, of course, but the trouble was that the families, especially the rich ones, were categorically against their love and a potential wedding. The girl's parents tried everything to stop their daughter and "son-in-law" from falling in love, but nothing worked. Ladoga Romeo and Juliet were inseparable and, it seems, invincible. Then they turned to the Lappish shamans, who bewitched the guy and turned him into an animal. He disappeared forever. The girl, unable to stand the separation, ran away from her father's house at night, where she was locked up, and jumped off a cliff into the water. But she didn't die. She became a mermaid - Impy . Since then, the Impy has occasionally shown herself to people at night, playing in the water near the shore and plaintively calling out. No one dares to respond to this call, and the Impy disappears again into the depths of the waters.

Rus is Russia; the word “Russia” in relation to Rus has been known since the 10th century. Initially, Rus was the name given to the Scandinavian tribe (according to some versions of the Baltic Slavs), which came to Novgorod and founded the Russian state, and only then the Rus conquered Kiev. Today's Ukrainian "Kyiv" has the same relationship to Rus and the ancient Russian city of Kiev as modern Turkish Istanbul has to Roman Constantinople. That is, none. By the way, in ancient Russian chronicles and documents Kiev is written as “Kiev”, and not as the Ukrainian remake “Kyiv”. Draw your own conclusions.
