Halloween in the Philippines has been around since I can remember. I'm 68 years old and I partially grew up here. It isn't like the states or anything like that. I also grew up there. So, I haved lived both Philippine and US Halloween experiences. The Philippine experience is just a result of US influences. As a 1st Grader in the Philippines I remember hearing both US and Philippine national anthems being played in school every morning. Both flags flew at the same flagpole. This was in the mid 1960's...well after independence day of 1946. Can you imagine a Commonwealth practice surviving 20 years after Independence day? Halloween is just another cultural practice that has been adopted from the US and will last for as long as people celebrate it.

Hollowen is for younger people obviously in public places, disco and nightclubs for they love wearing costumes etc but not celebrated seriously- for fun only. But on the others side-the serious one, you are right, it is rooted to a catholic teachings/tradition(in fact a legal public holiday-not here in new zealand grrr) where everybody is celebrating and reflecting the life of the saints-their good deeds and praying for the souls of the departed loved ones! time to gather the family together, go to the cemetery-the busiest place of the whole occasion(you can film it), light candles in remembrance. An awesome gesture of paying respect and gratitude to their rested ancestors... loved it...

I am in Manila now from 10/15-29 Who cares if Holloween is better here then America. As a 75 year old white male the good hearts and kindness here is way more then in the USA. Fewer complainers and respect is still taught in families and school. No matter how rich or poor I have been treated well here and spent about 15 months in the Philippines on and off over the last 10 years. Every paradise is imperfect so enjoy the good and accept the bad as the price of paradise. Where ever you go make sure you have plenty of money. An American will not get a job here unless it's remote

Halloween in the Philippines is more religious than commercialised. You would be surprised if you would go to cemeteries of the Philippines on the 1st & 2nd of November. It is like feast day in every cemetery as it is the time when we visit the graves of our loved ones and stay with them overnight sometimes. Actually, we start the day with offering mass for the souls of the dead. It is one of family occasions. We bring lots of foods, lights up candles to offer prayers for each members of the family who passed away and we deck the grave with flowers as well. It is our way of showing love to our beloved who had gone ahead of us. Those who dress up nowadays might have been influenced by movies and/or tv shows or social media. Anyways, enjoy your stay out there. Watching your channel always from England.

Halloween is more for the rich and affluent but simple folks go to the mall SM AYALA ROBINSONS to celebrate in a less outlandish way. In some odd or strange way Pinoys make visiting the dead like a Fiesta of sorts, some with music, cards, mahjong to pass the time.😀

I was out in the provinces during Halloween, and there was no celebration just for all souls' day . This mostly consisted of going to the cemetery and spending time with a loved one who has passed away. They may do it in the tourist bubbles, but i think beyond that it doesn't get celebrated because the people are already very superstitious and they don't want to stir up the evil spirits that lurk in the night .

Hey Brian. GREAT vid. 😂😂😂 I miss Halloween in the Ph. But honestly, my memories of Ph Halloweens as a young adult were in Malate. Back in the 2000s, Malate was a nightlife center and Halloween was Black Party. People would get dressed in costume and roam around a 2-block area filled with bars and dance clubs. It was crazy. And as for Halloween itself, its become a celebration like it is around the world, amd though the holiday itself is borrowed, we do have something that began back in Spanish times. It's called "Pangangaluluwa," which literally translates to "Acting like Spirits." It doesn't happen much in the cities, but in the provinces, kids and adults would walk from house to house, usually dressed as ghosts and sing for gifts at each house. It's similar to trick-or-treat, but of course, as Pinoys, we HAVE to sing while doing it. 😂😂😂 Happy Halloween!

I love Halloween but when people start celebrating monsters and not remembering their ancestors, something valuable is lost. Make no mistake, the powers that be known their family trees, usually direct descendants of Kings like William the conqueror, Alfred etc, as are most celebrities. Halloween is fun time of candy, parties and sexy costumes but don't lose the knowledge of your ancestry. There's more to that knowledge than just ancestry. As for the girls holding hands, I've often wondered but have you ever tried to find a Filipino in the Philippines after being separated... Not saying everyone looks alike but mostly same hair color, height and similar skin tones in a sea of humanity. You lose a 6'5" white, black or even ph guy and it won't be hard to track them down visually or by asking around.

It's the "best city to live in the Philippines" because it's absolutely nothing like the rest of the Philippines. They've built a gated community, all shiny shopping malls and coffee shops where a latte is a days wages to someone from Tondo, for the 0.01 percent and to keep the 99.9 percent of Filipinos out. I don't see the point of living there unless you have to be in Manila for business as I was for a year. But it's not real.
