Every Costco shopper knows that the store has some of the lowest prices around, but there are certain deals that will still make shoppers do a double take. For example, Costco sells its cooked rotisserie chicken for only $5, and the price hasn’t changed in years. No one is complaining about the quality either, as countless customers keep coming back for more, so how are they able to keep the price so low? Of course, Costco knows what they’re doing, because if you’re in the store to buy some chicken, you will likely look at other things as well. Here’s why Costco only charges $5 for a rotisserie chicken.

I don't like it very much, I went to the states two years ago and I tried the Costco chicken but something was wrong with not only the taste, but the texture, the chicken in America is too soft.

@Iraq Lobsta!! 45 I know, I've slow roasted chicken before, and it does come out tender and juicy, but there's something wrong with its texture, it threw me off. Where I come from, the chickens are smaller than the U.S, maybe because they put too much growth hormone in the chickens in the states ,and that's why they don't grow naturally, so in compromising the taste and texture of the bird.

Short version: it's what's known as a "loss leader". This is when a store intentionally sells a product for less than what it costs them to put it on the shelf in order to attract customers who will usually buy something else while they're there. Grocery stores do this with milk.

Another story.. I remember back in the day in Washington, Costco locations were very scarce. So most people would have to travel on the interstate for more than 45 minutes just for groceries. But of course, buy bulk and save, and before Costco only accepted cash! That said, the reason why Chicken, Hotdogs and food court goods were so cheap was because it was a treat for the long trek home. And some people were eating chicken in the food court!

If it had not been for friends, strangers and those birds I would have starved to death. I am sure there are a lot of needy folks that get healthy meals that they might not if birds cost them more plus good scraps for pets. I'm forever grateful to all the stores that do this. With a big bag of potatoes, 100 lb. bag of rice and those cooked birds a man can eat well for a while. A cane pole for fish and a good book in wild edibles and you can eat like a king.

Amani Murph that is what I ended up learning through all of it. Slow down, relax and sure as the sun will rise tomorrow everything will be OK. My kids were grown so it was just me and my dog. Every day it was like, it could be worse and for some I'm sure it is/was. As a child I would let the air out of my lungs and slowly sink to bottom of lake or pool and set on bottom. With the sun cutting through the water is was really peaceful so as adult anytime I'd get stressed I would let my mind go back to the bottom of the waters. I know it's mind over matter but for me it truly worked and now a stress free lifestyle is the natural life I live. It's a shame it's not an aid that is taught to us when we are young. It took the school of hard knocks to teach me, and today, I wouldn't have it any other way. Thank you for your reply and peace be with you and your loved ones.

I'm a Sam's Club member. One year my boss gave all his employees $100 gift card to Costco as part of our Christmas bonus. I used over half of my card to simply purchase the rotisserie whole chicken. My card lasted me into the start of summer. Their chicken tastes better than Sam's IMO.

Especially now since Sam’s Club made the bone head move of changing their ovens. Its now a big air fryer and it sucks. Costco still has the classic roasters and their chickens are bigger besides being way juicier than Sam’s Club.

I went into a publics and the price of a rotisserie chicken was 8.99 ,so I called Costco and ask If i could come buy just one chicken because it was like pharmacy food for the soul ,they said no so I asked if they could start selling the whole cooked at the food court ,the manager said he would look into it.I got chicken on my taste buds so I was not going to give up,I then asked if I could borrow a chicken for 4.99 and promise to buy a membership on pay day,the answer was still no and you could see the ripples starting to form on his fore head at that point I attempted to ask one more question and he blurted out just go and get 1 chick and no more and man did it taste good when I got home.I wore him down but the next day I sent an e-mail to the corporate office and recommended the he be the employee of the year. I love that Costco's chicken.

Vertical integration in the food industry is driving farmers out of business. Costco, Tyson, Smithfield, etc. externalize the costs of production (barn, feed, electricity, labor), putting all of those burdens on the farmer and then only pay $0.20/bird. Not to mention the dangerous/unhealthy working and living conditions in those barns. Please don’t turn your nose up at farmers charging $15-$20/bird. That’s the actual cost to produce a good bird. It’s time Americans start to appreciate our farmers more by paying just a bit more for good food that doesn’t destroy our environment. Source: I’m a farmer...

I know these animal farm shots get people talking but let's stay away from the binary arguments. A chicken's brain is the size of a shelled peanut, it does not process its lifestyle with the same awareness or value as we do, and its life (on a food farm) is rather short. Projecting humanity onto an animal is not the same as treating it decently.
