Dude earned his reason to be proud, everyone else just fucks up by constantly talking him, his deeds, and his entire person down. While talking Liu up, even despite the fact his brother has fucked up on his own right whilst getting egotistical in life (which lead to his ass getting fried by Raiden) Kung doesn't get enough credit, gets downplayed instead, doesn't have a support group whilst his brother does, and his hard work and years of training and diligence constantly get ignored. The problem isn't Kung-Lao, it's literally everyone else. He has something to prove, because everyone keeps giving him something to prove.

Kung Lao from MK9, MKX, MK11 are three different characters in character. MK9 Kung Lao was the best friend of Liu Kang who wanted to prove to Raiden that he was no worse a fighter than Liu Kang, but he didn’t have such an ego, he was calm and not arrogant. MKX Kung Lao showed no signs of arrogance at all or a desire to prove to someone that he was no worse than Liu Kang, he was like Raphael from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, he had problems with anger and holding it back. MK11 Kung Lao is just a Chinese version of Johnny Cage (which infuriated me wildly), even somewhat reminiscent of Homelander, who almost cried and was ready to kill people for the sake of recognizing his "merits"

Already starting the MKX, it was clear that the fatalities of some players are very stupid and meaningless, and in MK11 5-6 characters have good fatalities, everyone else has some kind of nonsense, like Sonya can throw a person 100 meters, she is an ordinary person. MK1 Fatalities didn't get any better (not counting Liu Kang's fatality with yellow and blue dragons)

Hey it gives him character. In the old games to me he felt like an unessicary extra liu kang like how Luigi was just an extra Mario. But giving him his own distinguishable more personality actually makes him his own character.

@@bird5485 but it’s a rather negative one though. And as for that “extra Mario” quip, it’s been shown that Luigi doesn’t mind not being the main hero. He’s had his own adventures, he’s had some decent recognition, he had his own year in celebration of him. It’s should be the same Kung Lao. In the original timeline, he didn’t fight for glory, he didn’t fight for pride. He and Liu Kang were monks. He acted as a monk should and fought for peace. If that’s not character, then I don’t know what is.

His personality may be negative but it's not in the way that he's on the verge of becoming a villain. It's more like a competitive Allie/anithero way, like with vegeta and Goku or bakugo and midoria.
