The competition has made others rush their products, and launch lots of variants in hope to secure the bag, meaning us consumers have to deal with lots of problems and lots of low quality devices. :( - Great video Taki, i appreciate your honesty. Many won't realise but you could have squeezed a lot of money out of talking good about this device, alongside lots of video content because you get it early, but no, you spoke honestly, and are giving everyone solid advice that needs to be heard. I work in the retail electronics industry and I'll just say this - be VERY careful when buying electronics made from 2021 and potentially onward through 2023. Obviously not every manufacturer will have the same problems, but the chip shortages and manufacturing delays reported are very, very real and many companies, even the big ones like LG and Samsung, have resorted to using subpar components for their products. If you're making a big purchase this year like a washer/dryer or other high-end electronic, _get the warranty_ . In the case of these cheap Chinese emulation consoles, I'd do exactly what you're doing - watch for Taki to talk about it before making a purchase.

Sure the Deck isn't pocketable and it's barely portable, but you're getting one of the most significant companies in video games behind it on top of the wealth of power, features, and ecosystem it has over most $250+ devices (and with shipping lots of the $200+ devices turn into $300 devices). If you're going to spend $300+ now, get a Steam Deck.. If you want a pocket device, don't spend over $100 and understand you're playing in a wild west product ecosystem. That’s another video that proves why I definitely and absolutely trust you and why I happily backed the Odin despite having never backed anything before and not knowing to much about igg or similar platforms. I just did it and since the Odin arrived I’m happier than ever before!!!

Thank you for your honesty and transparency Taki. I usually am a wait-and-see type of person when it comes to buying any brand new tech or systems that just released or are about to be released (except when I pre-ordered the Steam Deck). I was thinking about wanting to purchase an RP3 in the near future, but this is such a huge turnoff for me. Very bad business for Retroid to do this. I have never bought a Retroid handheld, and because of this, I probably never will

Many thanks Taki for your honesty 🙏 i was considering to preorder rp3 but i was waiting for your review. well no longerrr ;) hope that RP will learn from that
@ToeCutter02 жыл бұрын
Of course, this is the first handheld emulator I’ve pre-ordered in several years *before* seeing any reviews. Everyone raved over the RP2+ and apparently Retroid used the same SoC in the RP3. The moment I learned that Retroid updated the RP3 to Android 11 and saw it could be configured with additional RAM, I pre-ordered one because it seemed like a no-brainer. Last fall, I tried in vain to get an RP2+ direct from China, but for reasons I still don’t understand they just never shipped? I placed 3 separate orders with different vendors and still no RP2+?! I got my cash back, but moved on to different handhelds. Props to Taki for telling it straight. 👍 I’m not surprised at all that Taki shared his brutally honest opinions with his members. Integrity is truly priceless, it simply can’t be purchased. Retroid might not be around in a year or two, but I’m certain Taki will continue with his channel for years to come. WHY would Taki dispense with his established integrity for a single product review? Again, I applaud your class act, Taki. 👏👏👏 Handheld emulation is getting so much better, but the handheld manufacturers are in desperate need of *FOCUS.* These early and/or new model announcements don’t motivate people to buy, they actually discourage it. It’s difficult for folks to pull the trigger as it seems that there’s always something brand new right around the corner. In reality, nothing is “right around the corner”, these announcements are happening months before product launches leaving those who DO buy left wondering when their devices will arrive, if ever. Worst of all, this continues even with established brands like Retroid.

This is why I never pre-order anything ever. And for me personally, I'm new to retro emulation handhelds and it was pretty annoying having too many options to choose from mainly because a lot of these companies have this "quantity over quality" mindset. AYA NEO, Ayn, and Anbernic are especially guilty of this. I decided to go with Retroid because of how good of a product I heard the Pocket 2+ was and that the price of the system was good, but I wanted to get the Pocket 3 mainly because I love the handheld's design more. I wasn't going to give money to this product, until it released and until I saw reviews from true and trusted reviewers. After watching this video, I honestly don't know what to buy in this case.

If you're having trouble ordering from China, then try to find a local reseller. I live in Australia and eBay is a great place to buy it, but there are also Aussie websites that order from China, test it to ensure that it's working, then ship to you. I ordered a RG353P and it arrived in 4 days.

thank you for the honest review, as someone who got a 2+ "hit", it sucked too see people getting shafted with no response from Retroid on Reddit etc.. Its unheard of, i had a DOA Aya Neo, they paid for EVERYTHING, DHL collection, re-import fees, came back working 100%.. how is this not a standard..

I don't agree with your "A product should be judged exactly how it is on day 1" If it's a software update, make it available. If it's a hardware update, the company CAN offer to fix it. Look at nintendo switch it's great on day one, but the joycons will drift eventually, even with light use. Should we judge the switch on that flaw among many other flaws it had/has? Nintendo COULD fix the problem permanently, but instead they have you ship your joycons to them to fix them temporarily. Though everything else I agree with lol Thanks for the video and info on this device in the meantime!

Some of the most honest & insightful views shared by you here Taki, your process has always been methodical and thorough and I respect that! It amazes me that some companies lack so much integrity for their own product but unfortunately it seems to be happening all too often!! Fix the problem, keep your user base happy by building on the brand with quality products, that way your user base will always return because they “trust” your product.

Honest review, with the user put first - as always. Considering all the testing you have carried out for them, you would have thought that stood for something. Disappointing for Retroid to push this to the consumer.

That absolutely explains the specs. I thought there was more to this story. I prefer 4x3 and the rp2+ form factor so I wasn't interested, but I'm happy to know the story behind it. I do think COVID makes this a little more forgivable though. Greedy, lazy, and downright dumb, but what can you do if you invest a bunch of time and money into something arguably unsellable.

Strange how no one with this device is complaining of these issues...
@sethsez2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this seems like half complaining that the product isn't what it ideally could have been rather than taking it for what it is (and what it is is perfectly fine, plenty of products have to cut features between conceptualization and release), and half reacting to prototype issues that didn't actually crop up for anyone in the real world. Props to Taki for recognizing he was too close to this one to give it a fair shake, but this "not a review" still functions as a review for plenty of people (see all the comments here) and that's not particularly fair for what amounts to a collection of pre-release anecdotes that have little bearing on the product that actually made it into people's hands.

A huge thanks for this. I have the RP3 and accessoires in the basket for a few days but still not 100% sure that I want to preorder a product I've only seen a few people guessing on if its worth it. Not sure if I understood everything you warned about - its a lot of information but I'm thankful nonetheless and hope for more reviews and updates on this. It would be my first retro emulator handheld and I'm still interested. The RP3 seems to have some nice features and looks comfortable to use. Recommendations are welcome. : >

I’m very glad you made this video. I ordered an RP3 the morning I got the email about it. Your videos combined with their marketing material about how much faster it was (I thought it was comparing itself to the RP2+, not the RP2), well, it sounded like a no-brainer at $129. After hopping on Discord and Reddit, and feeling a bit hoodwinked, I cancelled my order. Too bad, I thought Retroid made great strides with the RP2+, but it sounds like there are still some boneheaded decisions being made. Thanks for coming out about this, as yes, this did affect my opinion of you. Your video is appreciated.
