@@annettewissinglaursen4280 what a leap, just because she's overreacting while *on her period* means that she can't handle her emotions well? She immediately recognises that her behaviour was "psycho", something a lot of people wouldn't be able to admit. That *is* handling emotions, being able to feel the feelings and let them out and then being able to say "I overreacted, sorry". Suppressing emotions just leads to bad stuff down the road

My 5th grade students tried to surprise me in my classroom for my birthday... The day before they kept asking my what my favorite cake is and when I ask them why they answered 'secret' the day of my birthday two waited for me by the school gate and had me wear a blindfold... Almost tripped thrice and bump against a wall multiple times but I appreciate what they tried to do especially as it was my first month teaching.

Agreed, everyone pretending they forgot before a surprise party in the evening sounds like the most gut wrenching thing ever. Like yeah, you didn't actually forget, but I still had to experience feeling forgotten for, what, 7-12 hours? Fuck that

And to me that's more suspicious 😂. It would be far more surprising if everyone acted normal. Said happy birthday, etc. The party will still be a surprise, you don't have to pretend to forget.

Knowing how much I hate surprises my cousin planned a surprise 30th bday party for me. I was so pissed off everyone was “too busy” to join me for birthday drinks I shut off my phone, went out and got sh*tfaced all by myself. I got home late, really loaded, bitter af and when everyone jumped out I just went in my bedroom, slammed the door and passed out. The next morning I could tell by the big mess and half the guests passed out everywhere that the party went on without me. When I told my cousin he had to clean up all the mess he was genuinely surprised, (Uno Reverse Card.)

We threw a surprise party for my mom one year. The only reason it worked and she enjoyed it was because NO ONE PRETENDED TO FORGET IT WAS HER BDAY. Literally everyone either sent her messages, posted on her fb or called her wishing her a happy birthday. We also told her we were having a small get-together at my aunt's house....she just wasn't expecting 25+ people when she got there lol

I think another way it can work is - still don’t pretend to forget because that’s horrible - but tell them you have a fun thing planned at a club or like a mini golf course or something and that y’all are gonna meet up at ____ house/apartment, etc. don’t say it’ll be only like a few people but don’t give away how many people will be there! That way, they know to get ready, and they would be prepared for an event! Bonus points if you have a surprise party planned AFTER going to what you originally said was the plan! No one has to look forward to golf or the club (or whatever) and not get to go, they just get an added party!

Gosh this is giving me trauma flashbacks. We planned a surprise party for my grandmother's 60th birthday (she loves surprises FYI). My cousin, Barb (mother's sister's daughter, also a granddaughter) lives out west on the other side of the country, 4000 miles away. There was no way she could make it (she expects other people to pay her way, but anyway. Knowing how jealous Barb gets, I told my mother not to tell them about the party until after it happened. My mother, always wanting to see the good in everyone, tells my cousin "so she doesn't feel left out" but says its okay because Barb promised not to tell. The day of the surprise comes. I spend hundreds of dollars on food, the cake, presents and gas getting my grandmothers elderly siblings and friends all to the venue. Everyone hides and we do the whole SURPRISE thing. My grandmother has no reaction. Like absolutely none. Just kind of goes "oh thanks". I know something's up because she loves surprises and with all her friends and family there she would normally be delighted, happy crying and hugging everyone. I find out later on that Barb called my grandmother the night before and told her about the surprise. I was SO angry. I knew this would happen. It's been 15 fucking years and I'm still mad at Barb for ruining what turned out to be our grandmother's last birthday. Brat.

Why do we live in a society where being mean is considered a prank? *sigh*. As for surprises, I like little ones, like “Hey, I got you your favorite candy bar while I was out today,” not something huge like a party where I don’t have time to prepare to be social.

We gave my mom a surprise party on her 50th and invited all her siblings. (she had lots of them, came from a pretty big family!) She thought we were just going out to dinner, just the 4 of us in the immediate family. When she heard a bunch of people outside making noise, she looked out the window and saw everyone starting to sing HB. She cried - happy tears! We just did it again on her 90th, but she only had 1 sister left, but plenty of friends! She cried again - happy tears. Totally surprised both times!

I think the key is the party was thrown in a public place. I feel like so many people hate surprise parties because they’re going home ready to relax only to be bombarded by a ton of people. You take them out to eat or a bar, etc. they already are in the headspace that they’re going out to have fun with people. The surprise ends up being there were more people than they thought! Lol I did it to my husband for his 30th and he loved it! Told him we were going out for drinks with some of my fam and he showed up to tons of friends and family! It was great!

That night I let him know how upset I was for him forgetting or ignoring my birthday. He got really angry, he informed me that he and his family had decided to celebrate my birthday on a more convenient day and planned a surprise party for me for the following Saturday. Surprise parties aren't usually my thing, but I'm really proud of the one for my late dad's last birthday. He passed away this year (extremely aggressive cancer) and last year he turned 65. My brother and I wanted to reunite him with all of his cousins and siblings, who'd not been in the same room for decades. As brother's fiancee was pregnant, we told dad it was a baby shower, put it the weekend before and complained the party room wasn't available any other time. We told him it was family only but not exactly who was coming. We got video messages from out of province cousins. When he walked in, we yelled "Happy Birthday" and he immediately SCOLDED US. "No no, it's their day!" We laughed and explained it was a ruse. Then he saw the photos on the wall, his aunt, who never leaves home, sitting there... and the cousins... and had a really amazing birthday. Storytelling, laughs, a playlist of songs I made (one for every year he was alive). He deserved that joy. I joked it was like that movie Big Daddy - "we wasted the good surprise on you".

I once heard a story about a surprise b-day party done (presumably) right. As I was told, the young man in question wasn't used to get huge gifts or a lot of attention, so everyone congratulated him in the morning, he got a nice sweater and thought that was it. But in the evening he was unexpectedly taken to a restaurant where his family threw him a proper party. It's not obligatory to be a jerk to your loved one so that you could feel good about yourself for pranking them later.

I had gone there to mope and spent the entire evening salty that I lost my birthday weekend because everyone had lied to me. My party was 2 hours at an expensive bar with no food and a guest list I didn't choose. Overall I appreciated the thought and can say I enjoyed myself, but never again. If you do throw a surprise party, do it BEFORE their birthday. Threw a surprise party for a young lady in our youth group one time AFTER her birthday. We did not pretend to forget at all, but usually, we would make some kind of plans with her (movies, restaurant, etc...). We didn't make any other plans than the surprise party so she just thought no one cared about her enough to do something with her. It was aweful. I felt terrible. Never again. If the person likes surprises (some of us do), then do the party EARLY.

I've never understood the thing about being mean or ignoring a birthday just to make the surprise 'better.' I've never had a surprise party before, but I have had my parents totally ignore it was my birthday and be extra nasty to me just because they were pissed I didn't finish the dishes or something. I was like 12 years old! I honestly don't remember if anyone even said happy bday or even acknowledged it was my bday at all because the hurt and guilt that I'd done something so horrible they'd do that to me totally squashed anything good that might've happened that day. Since then I've never enjoyed my birthday. Unless my son does something for me, then it's always happy! 🥰

I once surprised my sister from another mister twice on her birthday. Found out she'd be at home, so I send her a card and flowers and she didn't suspect a thing, so that was surprise #1. She loved it. Then, work was slow and my colleagues allowed me to leave early, so I drove an hour and a half to her house and showed up on her doorstep unannounced. She was crying in my arms with how much she loved me being there.

I surprised my mom with a party when she got to come home after almost 2 decades of being in another country (she couldn’t go home until then). We didn’t know how to pull off the surprise without mentioning that there’s a party because I booked an appointment with a salon to do her hair and makeup and I also bought her a nice dress. The party was scheduled around lunch time and her plane touched down at 6am. So after breakfast I just told her that there were some people excited to see her again, so we have to go to the salon to get her hair and makeup done and asked her to put on the dress I bought which she loved. So it wasn’t a totally secret party. The surprise elements were the hair and makeup, the dress, the people who were gonna be at the party (I enlisted the help of a representative of each group of her friends/relatives because I didn’t know most of them) and got to gather around a hundred people to attend the party. So she didn’t expect the party to be huge (I had to rent a venue, hire a caterer, and styled the venue to make it festive). When she saw the whole setup with everyone welcoming her she screamed with delight like a little girl. I asked my uncle to hand her a large bouquet of flowers (my dad was unfortunately already in heaven at this point) and at some point in the party I showed a surprise video of people (who couldn’t make it to the party) giving her a heartfelt message. The whole thing was a lot of work to set up and it wasn’t super perfect, but she was very happy with all the surprises and that’s what matters. ✌🏻

On what my mom thought was her 53rd birthday she was so excited to find out that she was turning 52 and not in fact 53 like she thought she was. For an entire year she thus he was a year older than she actually was. Then she was sad because she realized she missed her entire year of being 51 by thinking she was 52. Funniest shit ever. She just turned 71 in September. We still give her crap about forgetting her age. I put the number candles on her cake, and I put 70 to see if she would think she missed an entire year of her life again. 😂

I've only ever once thrown a surprise party and it went really well. It was a friend's 16th, she had a bit of a rough home life, so my parents threw her a surprise party. At school in the week leading up to it, it was spilt so many times by people asking about party details and me giving the "shutupshutupshutup" look. My friend was often not paying attention to things going on around her, so she actually never picked it up. She thought she was just coming over for a sleepover and was pretty excited when everyone jumped out and yelled "surprise". She metioned it every now and then over the years. It's a nice memory becuase we had a falling out when we were 30 and she has passed on, now.

When my grandmother turned 90, my mom plotted a surprise party. Her plan was to try and essentially prank my grandmother(her mother) and attempt some kind of surprise scare thing when entering the party. My dad and I both pointed out she was turning 90 and her plan might kill her mother. Thankfully she toned it down to just a simple surprise party in that she was expecting just a few people; but there were a lot.

My husband surprised me with our wedding!!! Even had my sister help, and to be honest, I don’t have the greatest family, and after Covid and many MANY insane things postponing it, he didn’t want me worrying or stressing over anything, my sister made our cake, my bouquet (which was honestly the most beautiful I have ever seen) I already had a dress for 3 years (thankfully it fit perfectly still) and I was told at 10am that the preacher would be there at noon. And it was perfect. It wasn’t about what my family wanted. It wasn’t about which family member hated who said they wouldn’t show up. If they were there in the other person wouldn’t show up if that person was there. it was about him and me and the love we have shared for the last four years all the ups and downs that we have weathered together celebrating everything we have gotten through with each other, because of each other. I have video evidence to prove it too, and the shock and joy are DEFINITELY obvious 😂, but I wouldn’t change it for the most expensive wedding in the world, it was us! ❤

I feel, if you want to do a surprise birthday party, you should arrange things with friends and family to greet the birthday person (while acknowledging their birthday) and do nice things during the day, like inviting them to a café and buying them coffee (and if they're working give them something during their break). Then when they go home they'll be in a happier mood (unless work made it bad). But only if they are the type of person to like surprise birthdays.

I had a surprise part last year for my 30th. I had spent the afternoon working my charity's booth at a convention and was EXHAUSTED when I got home, so when my dad said "don't take your shoes off we are going out to dinner" I was soooo cranky. He said that my aunt was buying pizza for us and I was just like "ok cool, have it delivered" but everyone including my husband was like "no, no, let's just go out" blah blah blah I finally caved and I am incredibly thankful that I did. My cousin that I hadn't seen in two years was there and so was her kid that I hadn't had the chance to meet yet. I literally cried because I had been wanting to see them so badly but covid made it hard. Normally I'm not a big fan of surprises, they make me very anxious because I'm constantly anticipating what is going on, but this is a surprise that I will treasure forever!

The birthday confusion was very funny! My older brother genuinely thought he was turning 39 when he was actually turning 40. I reminder my parents about his big bday. They called him and he politely informed them that they were a year early. Confused, they laughed it off and then called me. I was confused. I confirmed his birth year with my parents and confirm again what I knew to be true. It took some convincing and a birth certificate to prove that I was right. 😂 we still don’t know what year he had skipped or year he lived twice. But I think he’s good now 😂😂😂

I had the same scenario with my younger sister. She was turning 21 but thought she was only turning 20. In her case though, she had a baby just a week before her 19th birthday so we assumed that was the cause of her missing time. She would've been more focused on his 1st birthday then her 20th.

The best way to initiate a surprise party would honestly be to wake your friend up with a birthday text, take them out and keep them busy with fun things like breakfast, or a walk or shopping or something. Have an amazing day with them while the others prepare. Tell them your next plans are coming, but it's a surprise. At this point, and this point only when the friend has agreed to take part in the surprise is it okay to walk them into something like this.

@dinasilva9263 I know you what you mean, it's just that online people are very prone to use hyperbole when talking about creators they either love or hate. I just tend to be a bit weird about it 😅 sorry

The best way to surprise someone for a surprise birthday, is to acknowledge: the birthday, take them for coffee or brunch or something, give them a small present, and let them think that this was their whole day. Then surprise them with a full on party - IF THEY LIKE PARTIES! I don't like parties so it wouldn't be fun for me, but y'know.

I like little surprises and sweet gestures. My wife recently surprised me on halloween by decorating the house and putting on lights and halloween music because she knows how much i enjoy this time of the year. It was a small simple thing that made me happy. But a full on surprise party with a bunch of people isnt my cup of tea

I had a surprise party for my 18th birthday. I was singing in a band back then and they told me I had a concert booked that was supposed to be listened to by a manager of one of my favourite bands to maybe pick us up. I don’t think I’ve ever been more dissapointed in my life… 😂😂😂

First story, a sparkler not going off proper and no confetti, seriously, this is where it's the thought that truly counts!❤❤❤❤ Even if everything had gone wrong and my hunting had done this for me I would still love him for his efforts!

On my 21st birthday, not one friend or family said happy birthday. They didn't acknowledge I was 21. So after work I went to a liquor store and bought mad dog 21. The guy that bring me up looked at my ID and said happy birthday. I thanked him and went to my older sister's house, telling her she can't have any then proceeded to sit in the corner open it up and drinking it singing happy birthday to myself. Just that one cold bottle. I didn't get drunk and no hang over. 😂Best time ever!

I actually ran away on one such birthday surprises and my mom had to hunt me down to bring me back to the party. The reason being that at that point of my life I was mostly a loner/introvert and due to past bad experiences I wont get into, I wasn't used to being in large crowds of people nor receiving positive energy/reception/feedback from said crowds. The people in the party were all good people and the first individuals I got along with, made friendships and accepted me with my issues. (Mostly hung out with only 2-3 at a time due to my social anxiety) So my mom thought it would be cool to celebrate that and gather EVERYONE that I got along with to throw me a surprise birthday party. Needles to say I panicked when almost 50 people yelled surprise! at the same time and before I knew it my mom was chasing me down the hall. After she caught up to me and made sure I was ok I went back to the party and had a good time, albeit wile being embarrassed at my initial reaction. 😝

That's kind of crazy because almost the exact same thing happened to me as a kid. Walked into a room, dozens of people yelled happy birthday, walked out, Mom went to get me. Made more sense a few years later after the autism diagnosis 👍

@dannaaay7542 Yeah, I found out later that I have an anxiety disorder. I'm just glad that that day it turned out well and I had a good time in the end. Family is now more careful not to startle me too much since the diagnosis, too.

*Awww...did you see the couple the first cake was for singing happy birthday to the gal in front? That was awesome! Looks like an over the hill cake. The guy leaving one....the silly string squirted on him did it for me on that one. Now...if you have to do a surprise party, act like it's a normal day, give them a card, your gift, say happy birthday, etc. THEN everyone there, after a day of happy birthdays wished to you, is a good surprise. Food, drink, already got gifts singly, chilling...that is ok.*

The cake is a radio used in trucks. The guy was probably a truck driver. 5:45 Ok 13:50 made me remember a time when my family threw a surprise party for someone and a neighbor called the cops because there was “suspicious activity “ we were all parking around the block. The cops showed up and knew what was happening and the person who the party was for was right around the corner. So one cop(there were 2 ) ran to the patrol car to move it and the other stayed inside to yell surprise 😂😂😂 He stayed just to make sure we all moved our cars😂

The amount of times I’ve gone thru the one where the family and friends just ignored the girl’s bday and were rude to her, asking for her to do things and for “favors”, for it to *NOT* turn into any sort of surprise reveal or a party *at all* and still have people call me “rude” or “ungrateful” anyway … too many times. 😒

I'm Australian, and when I was a kid I didn't think American's did surprise parties, because I thought that's how people got shot! Also, dude at 8:10 wasn't leaving, just waiting for his heart to start beating again lol

My mom did a very similar mistake as the second one. She was throwing a birthday party for my grandmas 50th birthday. Everything had 50th. The cske, the balloons the confetti. My grandma shows up all surprised like "......its my 51st" everyone had a great laugh. And its been a running joke ever since. My grandma is in her 70s now and shes still like "you know how old im turning this year right?" 😂😂😂

I remember the only time my friends threw me a surprise party for my graduation after I told everyone I didn't want to celebrate lol as soon as I opened the door and saw everyone there, I walked back out. Some people, me included, just don't like surprise parties. They're a nightmare to deal with

Yes thank you! And what I hate is when people don’t like your reaction and assume that you’re a bitch or ungrateful because it doesn’t occur to them that not everyone loves surprises or a whole room singing at you
