He signed with Akon in 2004. At this point Akon has only released one album. He didn’t get real big traction until the song lonely was released as a single in February 2005. T-Pains first album came out in December 2005. Akon Was not made of money at this point. Who knows how much he has even made off his record, less than a year after releasing it. Chances are Akon covered many expenses for T Pain as well leading up to the album. There’s a real legit chance Akon didn’t have much more than 20k to offer. At that point in time he wasn’t close the superstar entertainer he became. He was an artist with 2-3 hits.

As great as Tpain was and still is, Couldn't he have believe in himself more. Could he have walked and chew at the same time.? Take the 900k so long he isnt tied to interscope beyond that one single. Use the exposure from a big record label as a spring board for his subsequent albums. Even from investment perspective, 20k is a long way from 900k. Am I missing something? Though akon might be a savvy business guy, I am not sure he had that much clout over the parent label. Big enough cloud to squeeze their hands hard enough to leave enough meat on the bones for TPain.
