Ken did a masterful job of handling Troy’s question and managed to cut through the itemized career concerns, right to addressing his worry that his life might be “cut short.” Other hosts have mocked callers by laughing or minimizing, but Ken kept focused on this young man’s path to progress. In my opinion, this is an example of what compassion and empathy look like. He didn’t give Troy any parables relating to his own life, he just kept it real by reminding him that life has uncertainties for all of us. I really respect Ken’s ability to talk to a young person without being condescending or preachy. Just remarkable. 👌🙂

Just a couple of years ago, Ken seemed condescending, and then something changed. He's now the most empathetic host (he and Rachel). He's great at discernment and getting to the meat of the question. He really seems to care about the callers, not just pay lip service that he does. He's become one of my favorites.

Yes, we all want a great retirement. But there is also a balance with enjoying life now. No one knows what retirement is going to look like health wise, and some of the saddest people I know are retirees who saved all their lives for their retirement and now don't have the physical ability to do what they dreamed about.
@bettedavis9261
@bettedavis9261 5 ай бұрын
That happened to my in-laws. My FIL got a brain tumor at 62 and had to retire early. My MIL had to retire early to be his full time caregiver. Their lives became going to doctors appointments and the grocery store instead of the traveling they had planned on. He lived for seven more years, then my MIL passed away 13 years after that. She did reno her house, so that brought her some satisfaction. She also had lunch monthly with former coworkers; and she and I went to lunch and shopping monthly. But it was definitely not the retirement she thought she'd have.

That question about the lottery and CC points really got me thinking! Even tho DR believes no CC for points im 50/50 on that thinking. I would never give up my CCs and I don't even have a business - pay them off as soon as a charge posts and use the points for SO many items that I don't have to put into the regular budget (gift cards, food for church pantry, etc.). I also like the tracking my CCs automatically provide and, since I travel, I get lots of perks on planes with my cards (free bag, priority boarding, etc.) Returns are much easier with a CC when I have to make an exchange and we can also reserve a motel with a CC and pay with a debit when we check out and know the final total. I can't imagine the hassle of trying to find a car rental company that will take a debit.

I was thinking the same thing. I agree as a 17 year old he wouldn't know how to handle it properly but once he's 18 he should have access to it legally. She should tell him about it and have him help make the decision how to spend or save it.
@notgivingmyemail3381
@notgivingmyemail3381 5 ай бұрын
I have a little different point of view. One, he’s been adopted so he’s not in the foster care system anymore. (Not that it changes my view if he wasn’t). Two, money received from social security (or foster system) while the child is still a minor goes to the caretaker to take care of said minor. Three, the fact that his parents are choosing to spend their own money to support him and save the social security money for him to use at a later time is exactly that, a choice. They are not obligated, see point two, to give him any of it. Side note: how does a foster care social worker say that the minor child is the one to dictate how the money gets spent? Does it change based on age? Are we allowing 4 year old children to dictate how the monthly stipend gets spent, either before or after adoption? Is the monthly stipend not meant for the care/support of the child?
@kyliemagitz2641
@kyliemagitz2641 5 ай бұрын
I appreciate your point of view. To answer your question, children who grow up in the foster care system (meaning they haven’t been adopted or assigned a legal guardian) get independent living skills starting at age 16 where they learn about budgeting/finances, college prep/ workforce prep, apartment living etc. So yes if they are 4, no they are not contributing to the conversation about money. But in this example that I am addressing, he is 18. They said he was adopted at age 17. So he should be aware of the resources available to him and the financial resources as well such as free education for in state colleges. I mostly raised my eyebrows at her not even telling him about the money because it is in fact his money & she should ATLEAST have a conversation to him about it. In that, she can provide her point of view of what he could do with the money. This is a unique situation. We don’t know how long he has been under her care, but because he was adopted at 17 I’m guessing maybe a few years. I just don’t think it’s fair to approach this situation as if it was a child that she has raised since birth(with or without government involvement). Again, main concern here is purposely keeping it from him.

David has debt, so he is in baby step 2. He is also in storm mode. He needs to stop investing and stack up cash. 15% of $103000.00 is about $15,450.00. Add to that his half of the savings minus the baby emergency fund of $1,000.00 and his half of the proceeds from the house. He quite possibly not have to dip into his retirement at all. David's call about the divorce - why is he responsible for her student loan debt? And if she makes as much as he does, why does she get part of his retirement? He also needs to figure into the equation that IF his eventual social security will be larger than hers, then she can claim on his as long as they were married at least 10 years. So if there's a big difference there that will benefit her in the future, that should reduce what he has to lay out for her in the interim.
@buckibanker
@buckibanker 5 ай бұрын
Ah but the divorce courts don't care in most states. They take the total pie of both parties, cut it in half and split it. Unless one is making insane money and the other stays at home or makes a small %. Social security benefits down the road is irellivent.
@notgivingmyemail3381
@notgivingmyemail3381 5 ай бұрын
Possible answer to both posed questions: because they used their joint income to contribute $140k more to his retirement accounts instead of paying off debts. There could be (marriage longevity unknown) a solid argument that part of her income went to increase his retirement account. She should get that money back. Another possible reason for account balance differences: they invested the same amounts into retirement but his investments performed better than hers. They could have intentionally put her account into more conservative funds to diversify (as my wife and I have done), she shouldn’t be penalized for that. As far as the social security goes she would have likely received that benefit whether they divorced or stayed married. Since the benefit would be hers either way it makes no sense to reduce the amount of marital assets she receives upon separation.

Best part are the hosts, worst part was their credit card lottery take. Credit cards take money from people paying interest and give it to those who don't. The lottery takes money from those who can least afford it and gives it to those with good grades regardlessof their need. It has nothing to do with whether the scholarship recipient played the lotto or not, the money to them by a bad system. Just like credit card points.
@Trustbutverify2651
@Trustbutverify2651 5 ай бұрын
Totally do not understand the point you are trying to make in relating two completely different elements. To pay off a credit card or not is a CHOICE. It is a false narrative to claim those of us who pay our cards and pay no interest and still benefit from the points are somehow "paid" by those who are irresponsible about paying their cards. Even if EVERYONE paid their cards on time, the banks would still make money off of the float. Sorry, but I'm not accepting your guilt trip just because I pay my cards and enjoy the benefits.

I was hoping for a better answer on the sinking funds, that isn't talked about much. I don't think the caller was being "paranoid or a worrier." I am wondering how to approach those types of funds as well. I will need another car a few years down the line, I like to travel, and Dave has said have at least 1 % of the house value in a sinking fund. That is a good chunk of change, that absolutely needs to be planned for and also slows down paying off the house....
@bettedavis9261
@bettedavis9261 5 ай бұрын
We have sinking funds for every conceivable expense (new vehicles, roof, driveway, foundation repairs, vacation, car repairs, home maintenance and repairs, furniture, kitchen appliances). I budget for each item monthly. Every quarter I transfer the funds to our money market account. I keep meticulous notes on amounts in each category. I've done this for years, and it's allowed us to pay for everything in cash. Also, our emergency fund isn't to cover any of those expenses. It's strictly for a job loss. We don't plan to dip into it for planned (or unplanned) expenses. Prior to paying off the mortgage, we were also paying an additional two principle payments monthly.

Too many people look for shared INTERESTS when looking for a spouse. It's far more important to look for shared VALUES. The signs are all there IF you look for them and see a future partner in all kinds of various situations. How does the person spend money? Is the person able to make and keep boundaries, including with parents and siblings? Can the person keep a confidence? Is the person hard working and one of the first to offer help, or does he or she sit back and wait for everyone else to step forward? Does the person change his or her mind all the time? Is the person high maintenance? Does the person allow you to maintain your personhood or does he or she need to be with you every minute? What is the love language of that person and how does it mesh with yours? Hint: if you have a "quality time" spouse, that person will need a LOT of time with you! But it's so easy for young couples to get distracted by chemistry or someone they have fun with. That's nice - but it won't keep a marriage together.

It's sad, Baltimore spends over 20k/per student in public schools and less than half the schools have a single student proficient in Math or English st their grade level. Most parents in Baltimore try to send their kids to private schools if they can. It just shows that increased spending by government does not improve results. Baltimore is one of the highest per capita spending school districts in the country. It has been run by Democrats for decades. 😮 A few years ago, a couple schools didn’t even have heat and some don't have clean drinking water. Where is all the money going???

But you can partially think idiotic George Bush Junior with the quote No Child Left Behind " Act many years ago Just like with the problem with idiotic Democrats who just loved to let floods of immigrants just flood our nation guess who paved the way for that? Yes he came before Bill Clinton who had no problem with illegal immigration This is why I say it doesn't matter if it's demoned rat or reasonably can they are both equally evil and both equally worthless

His second (and current) car is an automatic. He's grateful for knowing how to drive a stick. My husband's 2021 Jeep Wrangler is a stick. I don’t disagree with the answer that they gave, but they did not articulate it very well at all they just Kaina said that it was categorically not the same, but didn’t articulate why I think the answer is spelled out could’ve been a lot more interesting and educational for people instead of just kinda scoffing it off as a non-question.
