Thanks for the video, Tony. I use 2000, 3000, and 4000 Daiwa LT reels in my inshore fishing in the Mediterranean. The ideal setup for an all-rounder is 3000 size reels and completely filling it with 150 meters of j-braid, 0.16 or 0.18. I don't use backing in this scenario and never had any problems. But, on occasion, I'm getting spooled by large amberjacks or bonitos. So I got another setup ready for high-risk situations with a 4000 Fuego CXH filled with 300 meters of 0.16 j-braid. I don't use backing here, either. First, I don't want to weaken my line strength when pulling a large fish. Secondly, backing and braid connection knot, double uni, or an FG tends to get in the way when you are casting. I have had more than 10 incidents over the past in the middle of fishing, backing comes on top of the braid, and finally, I gave up. No backing anymore, and pretty happy with it.

Thats the way to do it. Electrical tape is all you need. The other thing is this buisness of spools that are fitted with a rubber " band" having the adhesive let go is just nonsense I sell and spool reels for a living and have never seen that . And if the adhesive did let go the sheer pressure of the line on the rubber would hold things in place because the rubber naturally wont slip on the bare metal in exactly the same fashion that nylon doesnt slip. And nylons a lot smoother than rubber. This dude is a complete drongo. Do not listen to him.

Some of the newer reels that are "braid-ready" no longer use a rubber strip in the center, instead they use textured metal inside the spool that the braid can "bite into" which I have found works pretty well. I can't speak for saltwater as I fish the Great Lakes which are freshwater. Electrical tape also does the job but should be removed/changed up whenever the reel is re-spooled.

Mono or fluoro works. Electrical tape works. I usually use a small rubber band. I’ve also used a couple wraps of elastic thread like Atlas miracle thread. Essentially anything will stay fairly stationary against the spool that braid can “bite” into works.

I'll just stick to using electrical tape because every time I use mono backing the braid eventually ends up digging into the spool at some point and that ends up pissing me off. and if I use electrical tape I can just tie it directly to the spool and it won't slip because the rubbery texture gives it something to grip onto. And my uncle Ryan's the same way too he uses electrical tape and he prefers it as well over mono backing.

Consider that the mono likely won't come into play unless you get a fish that goes on a long run, but you still have to join the mono to the braid, so you don't want really thin braid on really thick mono. I use 20lb sufix braid on 10lb mono. That gives me plenty of backing and if the fish goes on a long run, the mono just acts like a tow rope for the braid.

@brucer94093 жыл бұрын
@@micknoname6466 I don't fully understand the concept at hand, but have read elsewhere that the pound test of the mono backing does make a difference in the overall functioning of the final braid line you are fishing with. I recollect they advised to use thinner 8# or so test because if you use a heavier, larger diameter mono, there will be more space in between the wraps which your final braid line can more easily dig into, which obviously will result in less smoother casting and shorted distances. These guys invite questions but don't bother to answer them. It's an important consideration which should have been addressed in the content of the video!

There’s a great knot my local tackle shop tied on so there was no need for any backing, flat rate for spooling up so I’d rather all braid anyways, I was skeptical about this “new knot”. Fast forward I broke the reel, took it back to BPS with my gear guard and suffice to say they were impressed with the knot and no need for backing. I have to ask the guy Pete what he tied and how!
@jasl73584 жыл бұрын
Probably a reverse clinch knot
@markrigg66234 жыл бұрын
Its not the knot! Its the fact that the braid has been put on tight enough that it grips the spool, which often doesnt happen because of the lack of stretch it has. Mono has stretch and the tension we put on it when spooling means it contracts a bit and is hence very tight! Braid doesnt do this. I would still strongly advise to put some tape on because regardless of the knot you are at some risk of it slipping if your spool gets too wet (to the core). So you should remain skeptical. People try to be clever with silly knots and take a risk with YOUR FISHING. Theres just no need for it. Use tape. Where I work I have to re spool reels very frequently because of this. Its irresponsible what the shop has done with your reel.
@6atlantis4 жыл бұрын
mark rigg no it’s definitely the knot and tension. Not to sound condescending but I know my gear and gear in general, this knots the real deal. For two seasons all three reels he spooled up with braid (all 3 spools had factory “braid grooves” keep in mind) had no problems. No need for tape, only mono if I’m looking to save money from now on if this guys spools me up, if I spool myself up that’s a diff story.
@6atlantis4 жыл бұрын
Jas L maybe I have to ask next time I’m in the shop.
@markrigg66234 жыл бұрын
@@6atlantis Its not the knot. Its just the tension. The knot is only securing one wrap of braid around the core of the spool. You cant get much friction with 1 wrap!. Everything else that happens as you start to fill the reel is due to the tension and pressure of the accumulated wraps of line on top pressing down on the core. Please think about what Im saying carefully.

what knot from the mono to the braid?
@stevehare4984 жыл бұрын
Been workin in the tackle industry 40+ years and spool reels everyday...maybe how you do it on eastcoast..but here on the west coast we use a turn of electrical tape on arbor to lock braid to spool and then fill from a bulk spool of line to ensure proper filling..leaving room for a floro or mono topshot...that way you have capacity for long runs,which you loose when only putting on 150 yards and having mono on bottom that over time becomes weaker with salt and compression from braid and possibly losing a fish of a lifetime due to line failer and lack of capacity
@stevehare4984 жыл бұрын
Also you do save money in the longrun filling off bulk spools wether from a shop or DYI..as braid can last 7-10 years if cared for. While only putting 150yards on you will end up replacing more often if you fish alot thus spending more on small filler spools

How often do you guys have a fish take you down to the backing?
@bigtex7414 жыл бұрын
You basic premise, that backing prevents line slip is incorrect. The practice of adding "backing" to line was introduced originally in English fly fishing where silk lines were used. Backing added length because of the smaller diameter of the line which allowed greater line length. Further, because of the lower quality materials, then wood was the predominant material, compression built up as the line was wound under tension and would warp or destroy the spool. In20th century, when aluminum became the material of choice the tension issue emerged again. Backing provides a cushion for the arbor. Mono is worse because of it's ability to stretch, thus increasing the tension on the arbor. Dacron is the preferred material.
@markrigg66234 жыл бұрын
Ive worked in the industry for 26 years and have never seen an aluminium spool distorted by the pressure of nylon. Its all we used to use! There is no need whatsoever to use dacron. Backing is used for several different reasons as well. !
@seanwoodburn26164 жыл бұрын
@@markrigg6623 I also work in the industry. Much of my life in the 80's and 90's was spent rigging fly gear for bill fishermen and salmon anglers. He is right about fly reels, especially older ones like the Medalist or any of the old Hardy Lightweight or Marquis series. Like you though I have never seen a modern spinning reel or conventional reel distort. It just does not happen with a modern reel...including many fly reels now available. When we started putting braid on bluewater fly reels we found out fast that the line would slip. The bass guys were a few years ahead of us though and we learned to use some mono backing from them. Tape came later and rubber even later. Backing reels other than delicate fly reels has a pretty established history especially with the advent of monofilament but not because of spool distortion so much as line characteristics. Many big game fishermen employed mono as a shock absorber. Dacron and linen line stretch no more that Spectra/Dyneema. They are just "fatter" for a given diameter. Sometimes you want the casting characteristic of one line but need capacity. Another reason is casting characteristics or abrasion resistence. Braid on a conventional long casting rig with no level wind is a nightmare. If the line lay is less than perfect it buries itself. I am talking about rigs casting 100 to 200 yards on a conventional reel with no level wind. Mono on TOP here is more castable and gives abraision resistance. The braid underneath gives capacity and with pressure from the leviathan the problem of line being buried is mitigated. You do still need backing, tape or rubber underneath to prevent slipping though. I use this kind of setup for oversize sturgeon from the bank... Just a comment or two... Cheers!

Im running 20lb braid on my baitcasters with mono backing. I recently just ripped it all off because the braid would dig into itself, and stop mid cast/snap my hooks and weight off. Sometimes it even looked like the braid made a loop around another part of the braid. Should i up the lb of braid? I use powerpro. It was put on with resistance so it wasnt loose, brakes and everything was set to what i was rigged up with. I fish in texas bays, i run green braid, and there are also oysters bed sometimes. Thanks

From another video, spool the braid with a lot of tension to get it tight, and it shouldn't bite.

You can also learn how to tie a knot that won't slip it is so easy it took me 5 min to learn it and it works great

There is no valid braid knot on regular spools. As it shown on the video, there is a braid ready spool, but it is much cheaper if use mono backing. Most of braid which is manufactured of trusty brand cost a lot. And we always need new size, new colours and it hard to afford it. So we quite often by a 150 meters and that is not enough to fill up the spool because the braid is thin. Again, the mono backing is smart way the fill up the gap. Don't let anyone full you that, there is a good braid knot for regular spool. And, if I may say, the best knot for connecting the backing mono and braid is the double uni knot.

Super glue works good too better for salt water. I got a good system for Superglu but I honestly don't use it I just use electrical tape
@Jbonn61412 жыл бұрын
For me its because when casting, you never use a full spool. Its pointless filling an entire spool with expensive braid when you dont need it. Fill the spool first with cheap mono that will never leave the spool then top up with braid

Its scary that nonsense like this can be put out to the public. Just use electrical tape, and if your reel has a spool we pre installed rubber, do not get in a panic about the glue letting go. On some reels there is no glue! Rubber grips metal better than nyon line, with or without glue . Holy crap.
@thedon96704 жыл бұрын
you've been ripping customers off for years getting them to buy way more braid than they need to you can make more money. Not cool. Mono backing saves a lot of money and has always worked well.
@markrigg66234 жыл бұрын
@@thedon9670 No I use mono backing all the time with 150 yd rolls of braid. Its only when they insist on a full spool of braid, which is a legitimate thing to do for some applications, that I use electrical tape. You might want to put your brain into gear before you accuse people of things matey.

Roland Martin just uses super glue and glues the line right to the spool.

You know what would be great? If braid manufactures would somehow mark their line every 25 or 50 yards with a change in color for a foot or so.
@kevinalt84374 жыл бұрын
They do make that, usually used for offshore deep dropping baits

Great idea for PE braided line factories! If i order 300 yard braided line at the local angler shop they put some little peaces of utility tape every 50 yard.

Get multicolour braid they usually change colour at different lengths like every 20 yards for eg
