Thanks ARod... been using the oil filter box as a support for years on the yukon and silverado i had years ago. Still use it for the Duty today and prefill straight from the T6 Rotella bottle. Honestly, after my first oil change when purchased, i had a moment when i seen how much oil residue was on the filter in place and a few days after changing it. Have added the brake clean to my process now, to keep the bottom clean as possible to identify anything out of the ordinary/odd leaks or wet areas.

Oil filter prefill! The professional way to do it. Some guys with many years don't do that. "You might get a contaminant in there." Yet piston aircraft engines often don't even have an oil filter. They're fine and under a lot more stress. They last for decades.

So I did the first oil change since purchasing my used 2020 dually. I thought I cleaned up everything real well. The next morning, there's a big run of oil down the side of the filter. I thought the filter was defective and purchased another one. After replacing it, there was another big blob of oil on the side. It dawned on me that it was spill over from the change. So out came the Brakleen and now it's pristine white. I wish I'd seen this video before the first attempt. So I've been binge watching all your videos. Putting a little tip on your channel.

I have never had a problem but that plastic oil pan drools some .... If that filter has a bit of dirt on it and not dripping, it's not leaking. But, with that said, if I do my own oil change, I let it drip for at least 30 minutes and usually more while I putter with tire checks, radiator and brake fluid levels etc, etc, etc, and never a smudge. Unfortunately those home DIY oil changes are a thing of the past where we now live so I get the "privilege" of paying a stealership $150 or so bucks - but the tech also gets to do a tire rotation too
@Dieselnm101
@Dieselnm101 2 жыл бұрын
Many years ago when I was doing an oil change on 5.9 cummins the owner who was a John Deere tractor engineer came to me and said to never pre fill the filter cause of impurities that could be in the oil without being filtered going straight to the crank. So many different ways to do things I think as long as your clean about its ok to pre fill filter but when doing my own oil change on my 6.7 PSD I won’t pre fill due to the fact. Its hard to see what exactly in the 1 gallons oil jugs. I now use a funnel with a small screen on it to filter any unwanted material. I’ve found pieces of plastic from the jug on the funnel screen. We all got to be smart cause we have no control where our oil might be coming from. People make mistakes everyday.

My F550 company truck with a mechanic bed, doesn't look like that. I have always cleaned the filter after installed. (Brake clean) As far as filling the new filter, couldn't care less. I don't fill them. I worked at a Caterpillar dealership in the 90's into the mid 2000's. The instructors ALWAYS told us not to fill new oil or fuel filters. It stuck with me. I don't fill the filters. And if you know anything about the size of heavy equipment engines (3408 Cat used in larger dozers and loaders) depending on the application, could have two oil filters. Never had a problem. But the people who go into a tailspin about filling or not filling filters are just crazy.

If it aint leaving puddles, im not concerned. All truck fleets run the crap outta their trucks and wont stop to fix nothing till one of 3 things. 1, it dont run. 2, I fail the DOT inspection andf wont tag it.. 3, I threaten them with the potential of death if they dont fix it. Major fleets and I mean major from trash truck companies, shipping fleets, emergency vehicles, material handling, all of em. bottom line is what counts. But if the equipment breaks and cannot be run all, fix at any and all costs as fast as possible, money is not the issue, the downtime to repair and maintain is what they hate. I'm outside doing changes so I do not prefill, hell I dont even open the box until I am right there to put it on. The filter is NOT on the priority oiling circuit so your not doing anything beneficial by prefilling it. I've had cancer probably from similar use of chemicals and cleaners like that so I prefer to just take my blue shop towel and guide it in and around the lip, seems to do the trick for me.

Why would pre-filling an oil filter piss people off?!?!?! I've **always** pre-filled my filter so that oil pump gets oil quickly on initial start up after the oil change. Isn't this what everyone does?! Where has common sense gone? No one ever told me to do any of this but I've done it during my oil changes for 30 years. I guess I thought your process Arod was just common sense but it sounds like not. 😂
