This Is Why YOUR FACTORY CAR SPEAKERS SUCK!
In this video I attempt to show why I think factory car speakers aren't that great. The vehicle featured in this video is my 1995 GMC Suburban. This is the same GMT-400 platform GM vehicle as 1988-1998 Tahoe, Yukon, Sierra and Silverado. The replacement speakers used are Infinity REF-6522EX shallow mount speakers. In my opinion, they are phenomenal for the price. I paid just $45 for the set used in this video...

My 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII came with the JBL system. The speakers still sound amazing, but the factory amplifier took a crap. I got a wiring schematic for the audio system, cut the plugs for the amplifier, and wired the factory JBL speakers to a new Pioneer media receiver. I also added a Rockford Fosgate 600 watt mono block amplifier pushing two 12” JBL subwoofers in a sealed box in the trunk. It sounds AMAZING! I’m really impressed with how well the interior tweeters and mids sound, being 24 years old!

When I started driving in 1973, the common standard for speaker upgrades was the Jensen 6x9 TriAxial. Everybody had then (and an 8 track mounted under the front seat out of sight). 8 track player thievery was a booming "business". The Jensen's were easily recognizable for the bright blue foam surrounds. It was rare to get 3 or 4 years out of them because of coarse, the foam always broke down. In 2001, I bought a 2002 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab with the approximately $460.00 "Premium 8 Speaker Infinity Sound System". At about the 5 year mark, one by one the speakers started the tell tale buzz, which of course was the cheap foam surrounds breaking down. After pulling things apart, I was shocked at just how crappy the four 6.5 paper cone foam surround speakers were. The front doors had 6.5" woofers, and small dome tweeters mounted high on the door close to the dash. The back doors had one 6.5" 2-way speaker mounted low on the door. Dodge counts a 2-way speaker as 2 speakers. That was a lesson learned for me, That expensive upgrade was a complete and total ripoff. I doubt if the actual cost to Chrysler for that premium upgrade. was 40 or 50 dollars. I suppose in most cases, you're way better off getting the basic and upgrading. I remember years ago, if you factory ordered a car, there was always a "Radio Delete" option. Are there any factory premium sound systems that are actually worth it?

A drop of 3M 8008 “weatherstrip adhesive” on the screws will keep them from vibrating loose. Dynamat stuck on the metal inner door also is supposed to improve the sound.

My brother recently got a MK4 Golf as his first car, It came without a stereo so I installed an old Pioneer I had lying around. I just couldn't belive how good it sounded (without any EQ) on the front doors, but on the rear it sounded as bad as any generic factory speaker, so I just assumed the last owner had upgraded the front speakers, but left the rear factory speakers in place. One day my bro asked me to fix something with his door lock, and when I took the front door panel off, I couldn't believe my eyes, those great sounding speakers were, in fact , still the genuine factory (paper) speakers! I took a look inside one of the rear door panels just for curiosity and they were also still factory original. (those sounded really bad though) For some reason the front speakers of this Golf sounded as good as the JBL MS-62C's that I've got in my car, with premium amplifiers. Sure, not as loud or as bassy as mine, but just as clear and refined!

Oh! My parents had a gold/metallic yellow 2001 Citroen Berlingo back in late 2005 and early 2006 and I loved the radio and speakers, they sounded really good to me. I used to take the grille off the left door speaker as it turned to the left and came off very easily. Coke from Burger King spilled on the grille so I had to take it off to dry it. So ok, the interior plastics weren't fantastic quality, but their 2004 Renault Master van's interior felt SO thin and brittle and the window winder fell off when I wound the driver's door window up. The speakers in that van had no bass at all, even though I turned the bass full on. Their 1995 or 96 Ford Transit speakers had lots of bass and the interior felt so much better. Oh and they had a 1996 or 1997 LDV luton van and the radio hardly worked and the right speaker was the only 1 that worked. That 1 didn't sound so good. The interior also felt so cheap and brittle in that vehicle as well. This was also the case with 90s and early 2000s VW van interior. The Japanese car interiors always feel so thick and heavy. Very good quality interior and fantastic sounding speakers.

Three things: First, if you're going to replace the speakers with the objective of better sound, use rubber bushings on each of the mounting screws to damper vibration of the inner door panel. Two, spend a few bucks and get some sound dampening mat (like Dynamat) and apply to the inner door panel, this will further dampen vibration to give you crisp, clean sound. Lastly, consider installing dampening baffles to the back of the speakers to absorb sound waves bouncing off the inside of the metal door shell. We did all of these things to my 04' Thunderbird and retained the factory (Audiophile) stereo and speakers. Now the sound quality is night and day...and that's in a convertible!

Great Video! But a question, does simply swapping the stock speakers help? Most say you will need an external amp to drive them. Does swap only improve the highs or does it also improve the bass produced?

My truck is a 1999 Ford F-150!! I haven't upgraded the stereo YET, but I have been working to getting the parts I need for it!! As far as speakers I have used I love JBL, Boston Acoustics, Pioneer and some of the Kicker stuff out there for speakers! I have used those brands a lot in the past, and they all sound great!! As for head units though I was always a fan of the Pioneer Super Tuner hardware, but over the last few years I have switched to mostly JVC head units!! I SHOULD point out too I have had some great gear too from Alpine and Clarion believe it or not, and I once owned a Clarion head unit back in the late 1980s that was AMAZINGLY smooth and super loud!! I also once had an Alpine head unit that was INSANE, but my only gripe about it was the price really didn't justify the sound quality when I have had units that were cheaper and sounded just as rich and full!! My last decent stereo system was in a 1984 Honda Civic and was a mix of a JVC head unit and a set of four Pioneer 6 1/2 inch speakers that was pretty sweet for a "simple" setup!! BUT the wildest system I ever owned was in my 1988 Ford Tempo that had two ten inch Pyle subs in a box in the trunk, a pair of 6X9 Kickers hidden back there as well, a pair of 6 1/2 inch three way Boston Acoustics in front doors, three amplifiers and a crossover controlling them and a pair of MTX Tweeters mounted up front to give me a bit more "snap" in the high end, that was all controlled off a Super Tuner Pioneer unit!! The damn thing was impossibly loud to the point where you could literally be standing 30 yards from the car and still hear it has clear as day with it at only half volume!! A friend of mine who worked as a professional installer, helped me "tune" it, and his employer freaked when he saw what I have stuffed into that Tempo!! Other that the Pioneer head unit and the MTX tweeters YOU COULD NOT TELL there was three amps in the trunk and a sub box stuffed under the back window, and I had to alter the tension rods (that held the trunk lid open) to make it all fit in the back!! I do miss that old stereo!!

Great tutorial video, and your absolutely correct, the factory speakers are garbage because the car manufactures are not concerned about how the audio system sounds. I drive a 2015 chevy Silverado crew cab, and the factory speakers made an annoying popping sound when I had the volume above 25% with increased bass, so I personally replace the speakers with (Rockford Fosgate) car speakers and I get amazing music reproduction! I wish you would have given a sound demo after your installation, just to make a comparison between Rockford and Infinity brand car speakers, awesome video though!!! :-)

I Drive a 2011 Subaru Forester and had to change out the factory door speakers twice. My factory speakers blew out and I did the first change to Boss BV9364B 6.5in. Speakers. These speakers only lasted two months and they produced really low quality sound. Then I swapped out those speakers to Kicker 43CSC654, and they were way better. One thing that I would recommend if you also plan on changing your factory speakers is to install an amplifier that would put out enough power to feed your speakers. It will help provide a great quality sound and also increase the volume range.

I used to install car stereos for freinds and anyone that would pay me as one of my friends was always buying cheap used cars and we'd put decent stereos including large subs back before everyone was buying sub boxes. My latest car is a 95 Neon that my little sister bought new. Her hubby had already had better after market speakers installed after they got married. They sound pretty good but the drivers door woofer is now blown so I'll have to get a few more to replace them. I might even go with the same kind. I did put a small powered 10" suitcase sub that sounds great and replaced the cheap aftermarket head unit with a nice Dual HD radio unit with surprisingly good sounding amps built in. I haven't even added big amps and big wiring to take all the power I used to run. If you pick decent gear even if it's cheap you'll be surprised how much better your car can sound. My Dart I did a full blown install with 2 12"s 8" woofers in the rear deck, dome tweeters, 6.5 woofers in the doors with the old Polk tear drop pods mounted to the windshield pillers. It sounded better than most peoples decent home stereos and had very clean deep bass and overall sound. I didn't feel like installing all the amps and wiring in the Neon like I did for my Dart slowly over time and deals came up. I had 3 independent amps in the Dart, 150 watts a side for the subs and 75 a side for the rest of the rear speakers, and another 75 a side for the fronts. You can go nuts and spend a lot of time and money or just spend a little and have nice sound if you pick your components right.

"You stock speakers suck because the auto manufacturer doesn't specialize in audio." No duh..... I was hoping for a halfway scientific answer like the cone structure is not rigid and therefore flexes causing distortion (or) the crossovers are so poorly designed that they don't account for time alignment and cause huge peaks/nulls in the frequency response near the crossover frequency, etc... In terms of replacement speakers, put a $300 pair of JBL's against a $20 set of Polks and the Polks will sound like junk. Similarly, if you put a $20 set of JBL's against a $300 pair of Polk's, the Polks will blow the JBL's out of the water. My point is, the brand in and of itself is completely useless information in terms of speaker recommendations if that's the only information you're citing.
@johnstuartsmith
@johnstuartsmith 2 жыл бұрын
But back at the factory, number-crunchers decided that if you want a new car with something as fancy as $20 speakers, you'll just have to buy the factory's $400 premium audio upgrade package, or you'll be listening to their nasty standard grade $4 speakers . The auto manufacturers know that their standard speakers are trash and they've invested in market research telling them how many people only listen to sports or hate radio, are deaf, oblivious to sound quality or don't notice or care. If the standard stuff sounded any better, the manufacturers couldn't get the extra profit from the minority who do care for selling them the upgrade.

@@johnstuartsmith Even still, a lot of the 'premium' speaker packages are also very 'meh'. I drive a 1999 Ranger, when I got it, it had factory speakers and an after market Kenwood head unit as old as the truck. Honestly it didn't suck. I started with Infinity KAPPA 682.11cf 6x8" door speakers. Oh baby! what a difference! Next was a new Bluetooth capable Kenwood head unit, then a KAPPA 800W sub in a "custom" center console enclosure and matching amp. The most thumping single cab beater Ranger you ever heard. I pre-wired for a 2 channel amp for the door speakers but I can't justify the expense, the stereo already costs more than I paid for the truck.

My 2004 Nissan Frontier has stock speakers atm and they actually sound good, and the bass sounds like a subwoofer. I’ve replaced the radio with a pioneer Bluetooth HD receiver and big difference already. I’ll keep the speakers in video in mind for when I shop. If I ever do.

Nice choice. Your speakers are 93 db, frequency range 57HZ-21 KHZ, 55RMS. I Have a 2003 CHEVY Avalanche. Replaced the rears w Kenwood KFC 40$. 2 way Coaxial Frequency range 40 HZ - 22 KHZ, 90db. 60watt RMS. I already had a tweeter in front so I just replaced with a midrange , GRS 6AS. 9$. 40watt RMS, 88DB, 75-only 10 khz. Hard to find just midrange speakers. I tried the Kenwoods in the front but thought they were too bright. I still have my factory radio so lower RMS and higher efficiency was what I was looking for. Because there was a separate tweeter , thought that there may be a cross over in front door. Must not be because the tweeters went off when I used the Kenwoods up front. Front speakers are super easy to replace. Your infinity may be a good choice but I will unplug the separate tweeter . Did You upgrade your stock radio? Enjoy the day. Nice Video.

Great Tutorial 👍 Question... how'd you determine the polarity when you placed the old adapter plug to your new coaxial? I know that the coaxial terminals were probably marked, but was there a marking on that factory adapter [for which side is + or -] ?? Thanks

I had a 2007 Camry XLE with the upgraded JBL system, it would’ve been nice. However someone prior to me hacked the stereo and put cheap blown speakers in the car. I bought a set of Kenwood speakers and replaced them all, sounded amazing after that. My car now, a 2017 Civic Si Sedan has the factory upgraded stereo and sounds alright for what it is, I think I’ll eventually upgrade the speakers in my car. But the factory sub and speakers do an alright job for now.

2002 Z71 suburban. Mine says bose, but the only bose I found was the 8"sub. In the rear. The doors were factory. I went with a sound stream set that had separate tweeters and speakers with a huge passive xover. Sound stream DVD head unit, 2 sound stream 12s on the back. And a sound stream Xtream 480 I think under the middle seat bridged to the 12s. Used the factory Amp to the doors was fine.

in my 2010 Toyota Corolla I put JBL Stadium 6.5" co-axial speakers in my front doors. On the back deck I have Kicker speakers which I don't know the model type, unfortunately. I have a Kicker AMP to run those 4 speakers at 65RMS watts per channel. I also have an all in one JBL BassPro SL 8" 'shallow' den subwoofer which powered it 125 RMS watts and to top it off I have a Dynamate sound dampening system throughout the car to stop any unwanted vibrations.

Have a 2010 Mazda CX-7 and it's the base model so no frills. Factory speakers are the dual cone paper pulp and foam surrounds like normal, but when played through factory stereo and the AUX... Literally the best sounding bass ive ever heard on factory speakers. Even with my Alpine head unit these things rock and kept all their bass. It really comes down to tuning your music to play correctly on what you have and not what its made out of.

I used to have a 2004 Lexus RX330 and it had nice polypropylene cone speakers and silk dome tweeters from the factory. It’s a stock system that does not suck. Currently, I have a 2015 Toyota Camry LE and the sound system is slightly worse than my old Lexus that once I had. I have Rockford Fosgate Primes. Sound great! Went with a Massive Audio 5 channel amp, the 2000.1 I think. The RMS rating is bullshit, but it works well for the two 3" fronts and the two 6x9s in the middle. As well as two 8" subwoofers from Pyramid, (don't laugh, as mids they work great and they're cheap.) Set up as mid-range woofers in the rear of the Burb. I also have the Massive Audio N1 Nano for the Kicker Comp 12" subs behind the middle row. I removed the back row for more cargo area and it suits us fine. The Burb is an 85 3/4 ton Silveraydo (sic) Edition. And has over 400k miles and just about to receive it's first open heart surgery for a new 350, 2b carb and 700r4 installed. I left the factory stereo in place but disconnected it completely and installed my pioneer sDIN headunit in the center console so it stays hidden. I've replaced all the carpeting with black indoor outdoor that just happens to help the sub box to blend in in the rear and no one that can actually see through the 5% tint all around, can even tell it's not stock interior. I redid the headliner using super soft plush microfiber fleece blankets from Amazon and it came out amazing. Just a bit of info on my project. Have a good one Jimmy!
