as someone who worked in a kitchen store, i 100% agree with the knife block thing. they're ugly and awkward to place, often come with a bunch of knives you really don't need, can blunt your knives over time, and can definitely accumulate bacteria. Magnet strip is 100% the way to go. It looks nicer, it takes up less room, and it doesn't come in contact with your blade edge at all, so doesn't impact sharpness

I love the idea of having a kid in your life make art for your home! If you know a kid who's really interested in making art, not only do you end up with a super unique piece for your space, but it's also super affirming for the kid!

Yes! Kids are often great at doing massive abstract pieces too. I took a roll of lining paper outside and my kids worked on a stretch of it with loads different art supplies. The result is my favourite and our most complimented artwork. And it's massive.

huge fan of footstools, I have 3 one I move all over the house whenever I need help reaching high shelves, one I keep under my bedside table as a place for books, and a third next to a side chair as a side table. Two have fabric or crochet covers which can be swapped out like a pillow for seasonal pop of color. And also fan of hanging interesting textiles. We have a very graphic wool hooked rug my grandfather made back in the 60s that is actually really cool and is sort of a family heirloom we hung in the stair well (which happens to get excellent light).

See on the 'swap in for real plants'. If you kill anything green or live in a place without enough light for a plant to thrive, get real dried flowers. I saw beautiful dried arrangements in France, still really lovely texture and colour for a space, but the fact they were natural just elevated the look more than a plastic or silk alternative.

Yesss, I think this is a much more realistic replacement! Living plants are just not the same, they require specific conditions, you can't just stick a real plant anywhere.

I don’t understand the issue, there are actually some really amazing design books out there. Like landscape design books are amazing or a retrospective on an artist… Like if you actually read the text and not just look at the pictures it would make sense to you why they are great.

As someone that doesn't have a green thumb, or a lot of time, I like to buy easy to care for plants and mix in a few fake plants of the more difficult kind. Ppl are often surprised when they find out there are fake plants hidden among the real because the fake plant quality has improved lately.

I think if you don’t read then don’t buy real books. Etsy has really cool decorative book sets that you can buy. Why spend a lot of money on books if you’re not a reader?!?! That makes absolutely no sense to me. (I’m an avid reader, I read around 60+ books every year. If you think I own all of them physically you’re wrong. I read mostly on my tablet and I purchase pretty physical copies of my favorites and ones I want to reread). But you’re spot on with the plants. Either buy real plants or don’t do plants at all. Fake plants just look really weird to me.

I love the tip about custom framing. One of the reasons why pro framing is so expensive is your photos are archivally sealed, and should last significantly longer than if you just threw them in a target frame. (Many framed prints are rated for 100 years or longer.) If you have photos or art pieces that are really meaningful to you, get them custom framed! It’s worth it, I promise!

As a professional framer: thrifting frames is amazing! It can be cheaper than a ready-made. However you have to be aware that only wood frames a able to be re-used! Those foam ones are impossible to re- fit. You can also purchase less expensive frames but get professional Matting that will protect your art and make it look a million times better. Also do go look into professional framing, it’s not the cheapest thing, but I swear it changes everything when it comes to your interior design!

About the art idea- yes! I am expecting my second child and I am setting up the nursery very soon. My 5 year old will help with the art wall, we've talked about what should she paint, we have chickens and dogs, so far she's decided she will paint a chicken, our dogs and she wants to include a portrait of the family. I'm excited to have something original and not from Target instead and I will save myself some money! great video like always!

I absolutely hate knife blocks for the same reason you mentioned, but I also don't like having them out on a magnet strip because I have an irrational fear that somehow it will lead to easier access to either accidentally (or purposefully) hurting someone (mostly myself). Couldn’t agree more about the throw blankets; we were gifted the exact ones you showed but I crotchet my own, so those are in the storage part of the chaise in my couch (IKEA!) and mine are out on display. And I framed the first pieces of art my kids made in preschool and have them on display. They’re abstract and meaningful and I love them. Glad to hear that’s on trend, though I’m keeping them up even after it’s out of style 😂

Yes to original art! Using mats when framing original art is super important- otherwise the art will eventually stick to the glass and basically be ruined. Sadly I know this from experience. It’s tempting to cheap out when yr on a budget but you can get mats for cheap too, it’s worth the extra step.

In The Goodbye Girl, Marsha Mason’s character had a large Indian tree of life tapestry nailed to the wall behind her bed in lieu of a headboard. I fell in love with it. I bought two very similar ones and made them into curtains. She had the quintessential 70’s NYC boho apartment. Lauren Hutton had an even better one in The Gambler. I draw more design inspiration from film than I do magazines. I like that set design uses decor to give us insight into a character or family. I also like that it can run the gamut when it comes to period, socio-economic status, location, or someone’s state of mind. It is as much about expression and personality as it is about aesthetics.

I paint, my son paints and does digital art, I have paintings from a brother, a cousin, and friends, I've inhereted paintings that my dad bought plus his edible blueprints (which he sold in the seventies and my sisters and I still occasionally find in antique or second hand shops) and I don't feel at home until I have those things hanging on the walls. I literally could live without furniture but not without art! Loved your suggestion to get kids a set of paints in the colors you want and let them paint a one of a kind piece!

I so agree about the vintage frames. I buy most of mine either on Ebay or flea markets, then (if the picture warrants it) I take them to a professional framer for a proper, high quality mat and backing and also good glass if they don't come with it. I just got rid of my knife block to make more space on the counter and now use a knife insert in a drawer. Sadly, I didn't have space on the wall for a magnetic knife rack.

Oh, knife blocks! The big thing with a huge knife block set is that you're getting knives you probably don't need or will use. Thinking steering clear of them in the first place and investing in a few nice knives you'll use consistently is a better approach, if you can swing it. And knife blocks are gross! Especially if people aren't diligent about making sure their knives are dry before putting away. For people who aren't feeling magnetic strips (thinking kiddos or people who don't want their knives exposed), you can get drawer knife inserts to store knives out of sight--which kinda feels like a compromise between the giant knife block taking up counter space and the exposed magnetic strip. Drawer knife inserts are easier to eyeball to make sure they're clean/not getting gross.

I agree 100% about the wall hangings and the knife block, even though I’ve had one on my counter for nearly 30 years! 😂 It’s just been convenient, but I hate the look and the space it occupies - exactly what you said! Oh, the fake plants. 😖 Good video!
