I did that once and learned the hard way. Spent about $3000 on a top end gaming laptop about 15 years ago and it had a design flaw with the graphics card that rendered it a paperweight in short order. Because it was a flaw in the design and materials used themselves, there was no reliable fix for it.

@@DeafEcho27 Actually 1. Quadro RTX 6000 was in laptops. It has better specs than 2080 ti, the top end desktop GPU from Turing. 2. Reviewers don't say it about lower end GPUs either, like 4070M or 4080M. 4090M is literally desktop 4080 with slower memory, so if somebody says "this laptop has a 4070" someone might believe it's a desktop 4070. After all, the reason Nvidia removed M from the laptop GPU naming was because in Pascal and Turing their naming was honest. They started scamming their customers since Ampere(3000 series).

Typing this reply on a laptop with LM on its CPU. Purchased the laptop on 9/31/20 and in summer 21, I had the CPU (i7-10750H) at its 95°C limit very often with a few select cores always being hot and the delta between the hottest and coldest core was over 10 degrees. I opened it up in december of 22 and found a dry spot (probably oxidized) across the hot cores. I could re-spread it with a cotton swab with some pressure and the spot went away. It's now been over one and a half more years and it's still going fine. The paste on the GPU was also really dry, which made it hot 87°C (its temp target) even when the laptop was lifted off the table. With the LM respread and fresh thermal paste, it ran a LOT better and still runs fine with no signs of possible oxidation. The battery is down to 45Wh out of its 66Wh. Can anyone explain why, with the keyboard RGB off, screen at 0% brightness, CPU at 2.5W, GPU off there's a 14W power draw from the battery? Then, with the CPU at 25W, the power draw from the battery is at 50-55W. Starting a GPU-only load pushes it to its 30W limit on battery and the laptop then only draws like 45W. Is there anything wrong with the CPU power delivery?

Been testing on my old (relatively) laptops: ThermalGrizzly Conductonaut.... dropped 20C first, kept for 3 months, as soon as the copper-alloy formed, I opened laptop again (it WILL not spill everywhere if you applied it correctly) and due to 'some being absorbed' I cleaned all, and polished a bit cooler ... and re-applied, now it's beed 14th month on LQM on small laptop Lenovo X240 ... that I am trying to 'cook' as much as possible and check pure copper erosion - so far ... works fine. Also made high-G spin in hand, to try to 'spill it out' both warmed and cooled ... no such sitiation occured. I applied it on the die and on small tiny heatpipe with copper base. Other laptop has much, much bigger cooling and much older cpu (Dell E6530) and is 'cooking' since 5 months. So ... to answer: YES, after around 3 months LQM bonds with copper (that is why manufacturers 'over-do-it' - as they are not planning to re-open and re-apply correct amount, but downside is that they add too much so they need to use sponges, which are totally not necessary) but if you do it correctly (thin layer) you need to re-apply it after first 3 to 4 months, and then it will not mix further, heat transfer will be exactly the same.

@TheAwwWtf
@TheAwwWtf 2 ай бұрын
Edit #2: Since some of ya's are just gonna spam "my machine is fine :)" you are missing the point- the risk is inherently higher with LM. If you shake your laptop or take it on a plane or it has a rough time moving around in a backpack you incur a risk that does not exist with other solutions like PTM. Not to mention it's quite common for LM to need reapplication. If you want 2-3 years maintenance free usage out of your laptop you should avoid this solution. Also big shout out to G-Helper if you use an Asus laptop, it removes all the bloat of armory crate and lets you control power limits/profiles in a much more convenient way. Original comment: Word of warning to anyone considering a laptop with Liquid Metal. Get ready to tear up that laptop and replace the LM once the LM suffers from pump out after a few months. My Strix 17 SE with LM had to be disassembled due to 100c temps with Liquid Metal because ALL of the Liquid metal just left the CPU & GPU's dies and was just pooled up around it. I've put PTM on both dies and replaced the thermal putty with UPSIREN U6 PRO and I've not had any temp issues since, it runs even better than with Liquid Metal since it doesn't move off the die or have random hotspots where the LM just left. Edit #1 : This isn't a guarantee that it will happen but you should be prepared for the strong possibility of needing to reapply it or replace it entirely. You are warned that LM is not reliable for long term maintenance free use cases, so you may have to open it and reapply or have your laptop sent back and get screwed by whatever warranty they use. That risk simply doesn't exist with most other solutions. I personally will never buy another liquid metal based laptop and keep to any that use either ptm or normal paste. Also, there are tons of posts online about this issue but guess what these laptops cost 2000-3000 so not like there's gonna be millions of reports when it's an enthusiast ridiculous price.

Ideally a haptic one is always better (it is more expensive however, but prevents issues like Dell XPS 15/17’s trackpad wobble when they redesigned the lineup with the huge trackpad back in 2020) or if you’re a boomer like me, a pointing stick

4090 is a 175w chip and the i9 can pull up to about 200 watts. Running on a max shared load 175w GPU + 70w CPU is typical in the top tier class. You are more limited by thermals than power in a laptop like this. We have bypassed the power limits up to 175 + 100 on the Legion but it becomes overwhelming for the stock thermal solution.

The last placed I worked at (Retired now) has almost completely transitioned to using laptops over desktops except for those doing dedicated graphics or CAD work. Most of the folks there needed the capability to work remote or other mobility reasons. Exception were those few who did not need any mobility functions. It used to be that laptops were so underpowered that it was ancillary to desktops, but now with the laptops being as capable as all but the high end desktops it makes sense.

This is a crazy powerhouse of a laptop, and the ability to keep it from reaching thermal limiting under load is insane, especially in such a thin chassis. Good on Corsair for including a 2nd NVMe drive slot. My HP Victus 16 only has a single NVMe drive slot, so when I had to increase my storage I had to do a full clone - & - swap, which for the average user isn't an easy task especially when the Windows included method is "broken" and causes more issues than not. A 2nd NVMe slot shouldn't be an "upgrade" for laptops/mobo. Sure don't populate it, but give the consumer the option to add an additional drive. Overall I'm really liking the design of this laptop and the performance is a tank! Great video, love that you're feeling better!

It was their Australian branch which is defunct now but when I gave it a bad review on a review site, they got it removed by saying it was an old outdated review. It was still under warranty. I managed to get the review reinstated after a long time and a lot of hassle proving to the review site that it was still under warranty. I ran a Port Royal run just to see where I was at with my 7900XTX (ASRock, Taichi) and I hit 17777 with a stock cooler. Not terrible. You should run some stuff on the new one Steel Nomad.

I think they sell a lot more than desktops because a lot of schools give all the kids laptops/people drop and break them/they get stolen/people lose them and you really can not upgrade/update them like you can a desktop. Just my thought.

I have a liquid metal laptop, and the temperatures were insanely low, just 10°C below the throttle point. Six months later, the temperatures were idling at 10-15°C higher, and now it is always throttling. I will never go back to a liquid metal laptop because of that.

yeah, liquid metal always seems to me to be the dumbest way to go simply due to how hard it is to seal...

I use a cooling pad (more of a unit) that has a gasketed area under the laptop and pulls fresh air into that for the laptop to gobble up. It dropped my laptop 3080Ti over 15 degrees. Its chonky so I leave it at home but best $70 I have ever spent on a laptop cooler.

a 4090 in a laptop that looks like a business laptop and weighs less than a desktop 4090 with a power brick delivering 1/3 of what you would want in a desktop with a 4090 in it. This is like they performed magic to create this.

What would it cost to build this laptop (performancewise) as a PC? Considering the cost of at least the minimum required peripherals (comparable screen, usable yet simple keyboard and mouse or trackpad).

Gaming laptops have improved significantly over the years. They now offer better performance and build quality. However, their keyboards often become too hot, the fans are excessively loud, and the prices remain high. These issues are common across all gaming laptops, buying them isn't worth it in most cases.

I had my custom laptop built by CLX back in 2021 and it's fantastic. Spent $5k on it and then personally built my desktop for a little more than i spent on the laptop about 6 months later.

why? I spent 2200 and got a 4k graphic capable pc?(4080 super gpu with ryzen 7800x3d cpu) What are you spending 5k on?

@@PCgamerChannel mine is 4k capable as well. Part of the reason is I pieced mine together when there was a shortage so prices were kinda high. But I got a 12900k, 3090 24gb, 32gb ddr5, noctua cpu fan, 4tb nvme ssd OS and 8tb nvme ssd. Don't remember which case or motherboard I have. I plan to upgrade to a 4090 fairly soon but my job has me all over the state of Texas so I'm not even using my desktop right now.

Not bad depends on price sometimes cheaper to build a desktop that's more powerful but still a good laptop battery upgrade would be nice

great review, I'm look for a laptop to have when blackouts occur, I got a generator without an inverter and wont chance using my desktop 7950X - X670 AORUS AX without an S wave. Still a lot of money to spend just to have something to pull out for only when you need it and two grand will buy a nice battery inverter or replace the generator that has an inverter on it. The keyboard test sounded like a little kid running barefoot on a hard wood floor lol
