Like this and other trick we’ve learned on the good old technical metalworking school years ago when i was 16/17. Now i am 59! Make your own tools. No CAD, no CNC just old fashioned machinery!

I studied machining at trade school, completed an apprenticeship, while I had heard of burnishing techniques, I never saw anything like this.

What you need is one ball bearing on either side. You are also work hardening the surface.

Excellent. Roller burnishing is an excellent way of obtaining a very fine finish and cold working the surface to add hardness. This is a good process for finishing hydraulic seal surfaces. Let’s see you make a tool for ID burnishing.

I have been struggling with good surface finish on my old lathe, so I think that's a curious technique, and an asy to make setup. So now I'm contemplating to make this instead of a toolpot grinder. But it seems almost too easy so there has to be a catch.. How does this surface compare to a ground surfaces? Apart from the cold working of course, is this as good as a ground surface for sliding seal surfaces, press fit, tool tapers etc.?

@@computernamein this setup, it won’t be as accurate as a ground surface. It would give a smooth enough surface.

@@mattj5025 Thanks for the comment. Used a Dremel as a toolpost grinder in the end. Not the greatest thing in the world but does the trick.

But the sphere leaves ripples on the piece. If I had only used the bearing it would be more homogeneous.

from minute 6:30 to 6:45. Only with the bearing it is much better, because the sphere leaves undulations in the piece. If I had only used the bearing it would be more homogeneous.
