We moved into a new house 4 years ago and had to shop for a new clothes washer/dryer. Went to a local appliance store. The salesman was pushing a "smart" appliance, that would send you a text when the load is done, blah, blah, blah. We considered it, but then came to our senses. Why do we need a washer to send us a text? Just more tech that will spy on you and eventually break, or end up charging you a subscription. We ended up buying a used "non-smart" set for half the price of of just one new washer. Been working great so far. We can hear the end-of-cycle buzzer throughout the house. No text needed! Tech is being put into the simplest of things. People are stupid thinking it's cool and necessary. Wake up people!

I disagree. We have a smart washing machine and it's great for us. Our house is tech driven and it fits our home and style very well. We can start the machine remotely, which means we can load up the machine, go visit some relatives without knowing or having an exact time to be home to and we just stat the machine when we feel that it's soon time to go. When the washing machine ends a reading of the humidity level is taken in the washing room as the set point. When we open the door to the washing machine the air dryer starts automatically. The air dryer runs until it has reached the same humidity - a few percent or for a maximum time. Then it shuts off for an hour and then starts up again and runs until it hits its target again. There are a lot of appliances I wouldn't get the smart version of, but washing machine is one of those that you can integrate very well in to your smart home and it can really improve your life.

Internal sensors inside the washing machine can figure out the humidity, material, and size of the clothing in question (This allows the machine to figure out what clothing you're washing. For instance, a suit might be heavier and made out of more water absorbant fabric than a regular t-shirt). You really only need to know a few bits of info + user inputted wash times (like what cycle settings), wifi network data, as well as common usage times to triangulate a LOT of potential data. Not sure if LG machines work like this, but I've seen the insane data you can get out of a "Smart" washing machine. Thing is, the data collected isn't really a problem since it doesn't have much value, but if it gets leaked, i'm not sure if people would be fine with their movement patterns and household activity being known to the world, as well as what kind of clothes they wash (think underwear types)
@leonro4 ай бұрын
@@aeson000The data collection is also a problem because LG is selling it, which is no different to leaking the data with a paywall attached. Heck, sometimes hackers will sell private data they got from companies. Won't help with LG ThinQ (and many others for that matter) - there is no local option. Although HomeAssitant plugin exists, the plugin itself talks to the LG cloud and not to the appliance directly. The appliance does not have any standardized local interface and if you try to fake the cloud locally (which will be A LOT OF work), you will most likely run into problems with https certificates (the appliance wants to talk to particular domain and checks for the valid certificate - though this is theory and maybe they just skip the check - than it would be possible). Matter may solve this problem in the future if the manufacturers will decide to implement it, HomeKit also works locally and is reverse engineered enough so you don't need apple products and can be made work with HomeAssistand both ways (either get HomeKit devices into HA or export HA devices to iPhones as HomeKit accessory) - but many manufacturers still insists to use their proprietary cloud solutions and unless that changes, there is little hope to make many of these devices work local only.

Over the past 30 years or so, several people have tried to tell me fish breath the Oxygen from the H2O. They really think the fish can perform an endothermic reaction to get the oxygen they need for life. 2) You knew that algae doesn't take oxygen as it grows, but only after it dies, and starts to decay. Very few people in the general public understand that detail. The media doesn't often explain it, but you made a special point of making it clear.

@leonro4 ай бұрын
If it just beeps once instead of singing a minute long melody then it's definitely smarter than Samsung washing machines. But to be fair, if those devices hadn't sung anything and only beeped, then they'd have to be called Sam or Sambeeped and not Samsung.
@jacktringoli32994 ай бұрын
I see what you did there lol
@TheBrain2K4 ай бұрын
Well if the washing machine is in a different room/floor, then beeping won't help a lot. But for something as simple as "it's done", you can just use any old non-smart device, put a Shelly power metering relay in front of it and use power consumption to determine the state of the device in Home Assistant. I've done it recently for a dumb/cheap air dehumidifier. I can now see whether it's actively running, idling (fan spinning) or not running at all (water tank is full or someone manually switched it off - which never happens because it can be switched on/off through Home Assistant). No data to the cloud and it's just the 30$ or so for the Shelly PM relay.

Not to be negative, but I believe disk rot is more possible on disk drives than on DVD's. The files system ZFS is made specifically to combat disk rot. I've never used it myself since it's mostly enterprise companies using it and the support for it in Linux is not great. The easier way would probably be to have a digital copy on a hard drive within a Faraday bag, within a Faraday cage within.... you get my point. Also make sure to have a SHA256 of the ISO so you can check it and see if it is changed.

It can be done. To me, IoT is the InTRAnet of Things. 1) Buy smart stuff that does not need the cloud. Z-Wave / Zigbee devices are local by nature. Doorbird smart door bells can use their cloud but can function fully locally as well. Don't buy a Philips Hue set (Louis did a video recently on their bad practices), but their bulbs are good and work without their hub on your Zigbee system. 2) Be careful using networked devices like IP based cameras, and put them on a separate VLAN isolated from the internet. Connect them to a local hub. (Our cameras are physically powered off when we're at home). 3) Don't buy smart stuff when you don't need it. Your TV does not have to be "smart"; I prefer a dumb monitor connected to a device like nVidia Shield (that has its own problems but they are manageable). Appliances like fridges and washing machines derive very little benefit from being connected. Get dumb ones, or leave them disconnected from your network. If they need the network to function, return them for a refund.
