With a pinch of sniping at Christianity, of course, because he tries to do that in ALL his films; ooh, let's see: wearing a priest's clothing, "God kills indiscriminately" in Interview with a Vampire, a church is destroyed at the start of War of the Worlds, and now, a cross is being held in the latest trailer, in Tom's hand (oh yes, and the bad guy in the first is called Gabriel - I mean, he might as well just call the bad guy in this one, Jesus!) Apart from that, his films are totally devoid of any controversy.

I made comment on a recent one of your videos regarding the MI films, using it as a reference point in the attempt to maintain grounding in effects. But I agree with you here for sure, it's still pushing the realism out of the window. The stupid can be a little too hard to swallow, and yet they're just trying to make it cool. Sadly, it doesn't quite play out that way. It's a delicate balance.

Agree! I’m a M:I fan in general Dead Reckoning often looked fake when it needed to look real. It was also overly self-serious and edited in such a way that it was both overlong and almost past-tense. Honestly my main issue with part one was the dialogue. There are parts at the beginning where the crew are discussing what they're up against and it reads like it was a single monologue just split between like 4 people. Dialogue and events just didn't really seem to flow organically to me. Had a "too many cooks" feeling too it. Also they could have easily just made up that ramp to look like part of the mountain practically or shot in a way that hid it. Having the camera level with Tom, following him closely behind and then plunging downward when he falls could have been a really effective, virtigo inducing way to film it while hiding the ramp imo

I remember reading an article in a magazine, talking about the success of the Star Trek franchise in movies, and how Hollywood was looking for other TV series to exploit in the same manner. Shortly afterwards, Mission: Impossible comes out with a movie! I watched the first two and noticed that, unlike Star Trek (at the time), and much like many newer franchises, it had very little to do with the actual TV show it was based on. Dave,, the best CGI is that one can't see. The fact that it's too obvious in some scenes in Dead Reckoning suggests vfx quality failings rather than whether it was used at all. You mentioned the car chase; quite likely that scene has a lot of CGI aswell, perhaps even more, but it was done properly. I highly recommend the 4-part video series by The Movie Rabbit Hole, entitled, '"NO CGI" is really just INVISIBLE CGI'. I would include a link but YT hates that in posts, so just in case I'll include a link to the playlist in a separate post... Btw, have you reviewed Knight and Day? Good points, I‘m right there with you. A tiny, tiny „but“, though: Not only did you make a small mistake while comparing the box office numbers: For some reason your IMDb Pro showed only national BO grosses for MI. Also for a better comparison one should adjust BO numbers for inflation. I took the BO grosses like presented on Box Office Mojo and did just that. First the ranking without adjustmend (numbers are million US$, rounded): 1. MI:Fallout (792), 2. MI:Ghost Protocol (695), 3. MI:Rogue Nation (683), 4. MI:Dead Reckoning Part One (571), 5. MI:II (546), 6. MI (458), 7. MI:III (398). Now, the ranking with adjusted numbers: 1. MI:II (1,002), 2. MI:Fallout (995), 3. MI:Ghost Protocol (995), 4. MI (921), 5. MI: Rogue Nation (909), 6. MI:III (624), 7. MI:Dead Reckoning Part One (591). Remarkable: John Woo did some excellent work as a director, MI:II is not a good example of that IMHO. Yet, adjusted for inflation it made the most money. Although the top group is very close together. Dead Reckoning Part One is last, not only in adjusted numbers, also because the production went way over budget because of the big P.

Ethan sparing her at the end of the alleyway fight, and how she played it like this was the first time anyone had ever shown her some kindness, made her final turnaround feel earned. Perhaps I am reading too much into that, but that's how I took it.

For me, they'll never top Fallout. That was my fave. I saw it 3x at the theater. 🥤😎🍿

I enjoyed Dead Reckoning. More than Top Gun actually. I look forward to Final Reckoning.

I remember getting all the Marvel movies DVD set that included Phase 1-3 for around $10. Once this final Mission Impossible movie gets made, it looks like I'll have another DVD set to get. :)

Always get movies you love on DVD. Unlike streaming, DVD can't be updated for modern audiences.

@WillCamx You know there's this thing called Bluray and 4K. It's the fact this dude still buys DVD is hilarious. He's one up from VHS.

Love that final shot in the trailer. Tom speaking directly to the audience... "I need you to trust me... one last time."

I think you forgot the main reason the movie underperformed was the surprised, sleeper hit, Sound of Freedom took away a lot of movie goers. No one thought Sound of Freedom would make such a dent in the box office, but word of mouth spread like wild fire.

Fallout was always going to be a tough act to follow. One thing I have to say for Dead Reckoning is that, even though there was obviously more to come, for me it still felt like a satisfying movie in it's own right rather than just half of a story. It didn't feel like one story randomly split around the middle like some two part movies do.

The $180 million for the first Mission: Impossible is the domestic box office. The worldwide isn't shown, but is estimated to be $450 million.

Dave, when talking about Part I’s underperformance, you missed an important note - the Barbenheimer” phenomenon that opened the next weekend. For better or for worse, two films stole the attention from any other releases at the time.
