BMW of Manhattan I would never suggest. Their service department forgot to properly torque the drain bolt after a oil change and it came undone when crossing out of Manhattan. Oil everywhere and engined ruined. Attorney was needed as they claimed someone must have worked on the car. Good thing was the car only was serviced at BMW of Manhattan until that accident. I also had terrible service at BMW of manhattan. Brought in a car 3 times for leaking AC and on the 3rd time they finally realized it was the evaporator. Took them a week and they broke the windshield and in ny you cannot transfer the inspection sticker so it needed a new inspection but as the battery was disconnected the drive cycle needed to be completed. They drive it all over manhattan to get it inspected. On pickup there were scratches in the A pillars down to the metal and the shifter fell of in my hand pulling away. They then were going to the car in the garage area where a service guy was going to pull it up, after it had just been washed. The car came flying up, didn't stop in time, and hit the building pretty hard. This happened to the guy who had just bought his first brand new car and never got a chance to drive it. I guess he turned to the salesman and told him that they are going to undo the paper work right now. They did and he walked out the door.

After incident I spoke to a lawyer who provided similar advice.. My dad leased a 2013 750 Li from the same dealership and the ownership experience was terrible. Not just because that specific BMW had engine and transmission issues through the ass, but also because the dealership was so shrewd and secretive when it came to the car's issues. Over the entire 3 year lease the car was in the shop for at least 4 months in total. Once they had it for a whole month and refused to tell him what was taking so long to fix it. They tried to appease him with driving a brand new 7 series for a few weeks so good to know that strategy has been used a lot by the dealership.

"If it's gonna get ugly, get ugly early." This is probably the best piece of advice I could give to a service dept manager. Accidents are inevitable, but you only make it worse trying to cover it up. On the other hand, it surprised me to hear him talking about the way he treated the dealer's car when he's the kind of person who didn't even want them washing his after a service. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Most likely he was kept on payroll and the repair bill was garnished from his paycheck, while at the same time the dealer made a claim to their insurance. If the mechanic complained the GM would say it was to cover the rise in the insurance premiums. Then the mechanic's hours would be cut and he'd be given $h!#y assignments until he quit.

When I worked for a Chevy store, I got into an accident with a Suburban. I was taking it to a stereo shop to get the stereo fixed. The general manager asked me how I was going to pay for the damage and I told him I am not going to. Either the insurance will pay or the dealership will, but according to the law in the state I was in, I was working for the dealership at the time and therefore I was not personally libel. This is a different case as the employee didn't have permission to take the car out, so it could go either way.

When i worked for Toyota we had a brand new Land Cruiser go missing before it could get government registered. No clues, could have been missing for months and was only noticed at a periodic stocktake!. It caused a huge problem, got loads of people involved and had to go through an insurance claim. About 2 weeks after it was all settled, a greasy 17 year old welder drives this thing in through our front gates and just dumps it. As he is about to get in the car picking him up im like "whooaaaa whats this mate?"..... it had been at the engineering company getting some steel work done (it was destined for a mining company, nothing unusual we used to get dozens done a month), but no one had been to go get it and they had let it sit there for almost a year!!! I work at an AMG performance center, and we get cars in quite often that have just finished their break-in period. We will ALWAYS inform the customer that we WILL need to drive the car after the diff fluids are changed, and such, because it is vital that we go through the whole car to make sure its working perfectly as intended. And we have once had a car get dinged up while this happend. And let me tell you, we did literally all we could to assist the customer, no hiding anything, we called him the moment we knew about it. This behavior of hiding it from the customer seems to be an American trait... We however ended up fixing the car for the customer, since it was pretty minor. Still a massive fuck up on our behalf, but we owned up to it right there and then. Can't imagine what must have gone through your head! But then I am the face of our store being a Product Expert, so I talk mainly to customers, and take pride in being honest, and upfront about stuff! Glad the conclusion was happy! Nothing wrong with buying a new car. Just, as much as you can, service it yourself. I bought a new Corolla in 2020. This coming year, when it's due for its first oil change, I will do it myself. Toyota offers two years of free maintenance for every new car sold. I'm not going to take advantage of this free offer. I'm just going to presume that the oil changer person at the dealership will figure out some way to mess up the car. Less hassle for me to do it myself.
@Hobinator17
@Hobinator17 3 жыл бұрын
@@hamsterama I get what you mean but you should actually take advantage of those free services. I hated changing the oil on my volvo & free service for 2 years on my new toyota is awesome. But I wouldnt trust the dealer for anything other than oil/tire rotations. And only if its free.

@Cohiba2 3 жыл бұрын
@@hamsterama As a former dealership employee who's seen this happen way to many times including lawyers involved. Here how its going to go should you need to replace the engine because it start burning a ton of oil, throws a rod or some other catastrophic failure. Dealership will ask for all records of oil changes done by a certified mechanic. Failure to provide said records will result in dealership and corporate saying no new engine your fault not covered under warranty. Like i said seen it with lawyers involved and that whole certified mechanic and documentation of the oil changes was always the sticking point of the many engines i saw replaced under customer dime not warranty.
@hamsterama
@hamsterama 3 жыл бұрын
@@Cohiba2 But I thought that it doesn't void the warranty if you change the oil yourself, as long as you keep records. Like writing down the date and time your changed the oil, and keeping all receipts. If a car starts burning oil or throws a rod, whether the oil was changed or not would have no bearing on that. That's a design flaw, not a maintenance issue. Right now, I'm a couple months away from the oil needing changed (oil needs changed only every 12 months, and I bought the car in March 2020.) I think what I'll do next month is go to Toyota's website and fill out a contact form, asking if I can change the oil myself without voiding the warranty. And if so, what records I need to keep, or if I have to buy the oil and filter from the dealership. That's the only way to know for certain. I just don't trust the clowns in the dealership. It's not their car, so they won't care. At least if I do the maintenance, I know it's going to be done right.

As a "high-end" dealership employee and a car guy, this is nightmare inducing/PTSD-triggering. I've worked at previous dealers where similar shady behavior occurred, and I can tell you that practically EVERY TIME the dealer gets caught. If you don't get caught, you get cocky and slip up the next time. Own your mistakes, be honest with the customer, and while they may be mad at first, they will appreciate your honesty as long as you do everything within your power to make it right. I wish every shop/dealer employee was required to watch this video as part of their training.
