In the UK we’re told not to give the homeless money but offer to buy them food/water instead. I think for the most part it’s to prevent donations being used for drugs, but I’ve never considered until now that it could also prevent this.

Honestly I don't care if someone would use the cash I gave them to buy drugs. Obviously it's bad to be addicted to drugs, but addiction recovery is complex, long, and difficult especially when you're dealing with the stress of being homeless. A small single donation probably isnt going to a big difference for them either way for recovery in the long term, so if they bought drugs with the money and it helped them get a night or a few hours of peace or easing their pain, I still feel I've done a good thing. I was also generally taught to offer to buy food or water instead of money too, but I just don't care what they do with it (......as long as they're actually in need, looking at you lady). If they really need it and are desperate, whatever they spend it on is going to be helpful for them whether that's physically, mentally, etc. Socks/underwear are a desperately needed item so if you aren't comfortable giving out money maybe you could buy and keep some in the car or in your bag to offer. I used to also carry about individually prepackaged granola, protein bars etc but I know a lot of homeless people don't trust being given food like that because there's awful horrible people out there who've deliberately poisoned food and drinks they gave out to the homeless to hurt and kill them just because they're homeless :(

I used to walk to work with a book bag. I also used to collect cans on the "bad side" of my neighborhood. People used to try to give me money and things, thinking I was homeless. Each time, I would try to explain i wasn't homeless and was on my way to work and that i didn't need it( I had a stocking job and there was a really relaxed dress code). It's amazing how many good people there are out there who really want to help others.

I used to dumpster dive for shits, giggles and profits (eBay). People tried to give me food and money on multiple occasions. I took it anyway because I actually was quite poor and trying to save money to move someplace with better prospects. A bag of canned goods here and $10 there wasn't a huge difference, but I appreciated every chip it took out of my living costs.

My grandma does this. It's infuriating and me and my parents are all embarrassed and angry but we live in different countries and we can't stop her. She was arrested, released and went right back to doing that. She's also a pathological liar and has always acted in a rather bizarre way. I once gave this homeless young man a giant cardboard box full of Panera bread that I won as a prize from a competition. The way he broke down and started crying while saying "thank you" really broke my heart. It seems like he had younger siblings to take care of and he was really worried about getting them some food. The look on his face still haunts me to this day and I feel guilty that I couldn't do more to help him because I was only a middle schooler back then. Since then, I've made a habit of donating money at least once a month. The idea that people would take advantage of other people's invulnerability like this really sickens me because not only do the people who need money not get it because scumbag scammers like these have given genuine homeless people a bad reputation, but they've also created trust issues for the people who do donate because they don't know if the other party is faking it or not. This type of news is going leave negative impact on others and people are going to be skeptical when helping others. It's awful all around and these scammers deserve jail time as well as some public record with their names and faces on them.

Strangers have given me money and food so many times. I think it was because I never asked, I just looked pathetic without realizing it. One lady gave me 80 bucks when I was alone in a cafe around Christmas and had an argument with my mom on the phone. People kept thinking I was blind because I'm autistic and walk with a cane (I would correct them though when possible). Although I've been homeless, I usually had somewhere to live, but it was often unbearable to hang out there, so I used to spend a lot of time wandering the streets dragging my possessions behind me.

They didn't know it at the time, but that money allowed me to house my very ill mother in a motel instead of on the floor at the local fire shelter center. She couldn't even get on the floor if you paid her. Another lady also from Twitch crocheted me a pillow, and yet another sent a book + a little care package that warmed my heart no end. I've never met any of them irl, but it doesn't matter.. i consider them friends and sisters. They'll be getting presents this Christmas, if I can only manage to drive to post office. I live in a pretty rich area, there are a bunch of people who used to do minimum wage jobs that I see on the street corners nowadays, I had a conversation with one who used to be a friend and his takaway was basically "I can work my ass off for $12 an hour or I can sit and look pitiful and if one of the rich tourists tosses me a $20 each hour and I make more then when I was breaking my back" it was a real shock to me, and it shows a lot of what can cause this, the hopelessness of minimum wage jobs, the fact that the gap between rich and poor is so huge that an hours wage for someone at the low end means nothing to someone wealthy, it really sucks. I would never do something like this but when he told me about the value proposition I doubted myself if I wanted to go back to that burger flipping job for (at the time) $12 an hour or if I should just join this asshole sitting on a street corner and make more money on average. $15 an hour for these minimum wage jobs is better then it was, but not enough. frankly we need to address the minimum wage.

My best friend in high school was homeless for a while, I used to go visit him under the bridge where he liked to hang out. I remember how hard it was for him and the other guys down there, sleeping on actual rocks and dealing with these nasty acidic caterpillars that would crawl across their skin and leave a red trail of agitated skin. I've been homeless a few times, and never felt that panhandling was a valuable use of my time. That said, I do find it annoying when people think having a cellphone, or a car, or "non homeless looking clothes" means you're trying to scam people. Living in a car is still a pretty rough spot to be in. It's also not like you just go trade in all your old stuff at the homeless store in exchange for a shopping cart and tattered clothes.

Damn, Charlie... I’m sorry that happened to you. I was homeless for a long time after I got home from Iraq, but I’m not anymore because of the VA. Any veteran who tells you they’re homeless has options for getting out of the situation and being housed. It’s a program called HUD VASH (VA Supported Housing) the VA will pay up to $625/month for your rent, along with a utilities allowance check at the beginning of every month. This program has no time limits whatsoever, so a veteran can be in it for as long as they need the assistance. During your time in the program, they will assign an employment specialist to assist you in finding a permanent job to provide steady income for you. Any veteran who remains homeless is doing so either because they were dishonorably discharged and lost their VA benefits or is refusing to meet the requirements of the program (no alcohol in the household, no drugs/paraphernalia, no criminal activity of any kind, etc. Not unreasonable requirements. If you encounter a veteran that is homeless, direct them to the nearest VA facility, do NOT give them monetary assistance at all.

The fact that they could possibly get access to the room because they're paying for it (on their card and whatnot, as a credit card is required for the VAST majority of hotel rooms) or even just know where I am sleeping/staying could be dangerous. And homeless people often turn down food because many people think its funny to give food they have messed with... put dog poop in or something... It really sucks. I had this happen in KC when I went to college there. In the plaza downtown, there was always the same nice old man in the same spot, sitting on a bucket, with a sign asking for "a deposit on a cheeseburger", and one day I watched him take his bucket he sat on, walk into the parking garage he was begging in front of, and get into his own luxury car.... I remember it being like a Mercedes or something nice, and he drove off. Obviously, soooooooo many homeless people out there ge uinely do need help, and that's why I get doubly mad at these frauds.... Story time with Spoot: I was doing a lot of hard drugs at the age of 19, lost my friends, family and finally my place to live. I ended up homeless in Connecticut in late march (VERY cold). So I asked a friend to take a road trip with me to Georgia. I stayed in GA to live on the Appalachian Trail when he headed back to CT. I had minimal supplies no money and no choice I just had to make it work. Sitting outside places I would stop to rest at, people would make conversation and ask me about my trip so far. I would explain my situation honestly, but never once held a sign, asked for money, or even insinuated that I needed help. Simply said "ah just taking a lonesome venture to get clean and start new. Figuring things out as I go." Maybe it was because I was visibly young or maybe it was the fact I had in interesting story but people would come out of the store with bags of food and supplies to just hand to me and say "good luck, stay safe". Many people handed me cash on top of the things they bought. Many times I was holding back tears as these people not only helped me through these hard times, they sympathized and gave me advice and directions or info on good places to stay and clean up. Stranger hospitality is very very real and I quite literally might not be here to type this if it wasn't for the kindness of strangers. It breaks my heart into a million pieces to see people taking advantage of that kindness. I'm in a much better position now. I'm 25 and found work in pro hockey so anytime I see someone down on their luck I give what I can. I wont stop giving even though there's a chance that person is like this lady and I stress to all of you to please keep giving and don't let this effect that. Most people out there really truly relish that dollar or two.

I look just as "normal" and clean as her, but never would do what she's doing. Not even in war did we scam people.. we helped each other, and that's how most of us survived. (Bosnia, 90s. I was 14 when it started, 17 when we came to US and i had to start working, driving and being head of the family). From civil engineer to homeless just coz of illness i did nothing to bring on. But I still give, still drive other homeless in my city to thrift stores.. some are mean to each other, some are generous to a fault. Last night i couldn't get myself a drink or food, so I gave a homeless friend (whom i met by chasing him around thinking he's a thief, lol) some $ and tried to let him keep the change. He wouldn't. I insisted. Just as he was leaving, he tosses something into my car & drives off. It was the rest of the money I gave him & asked him to keep (coz at this moment his need is greater than mine, at least until the 3rd). He only bought himself a pack of cigs. That's all he'd accept, and I know for a fact he doesn't even have enough to fill up his gas tank.. which he used to get me the vitamin water I wanted. There's bad apples in every group of people wherever you look... including houseless. But there's also heart, integrity and conscience in many of us. I've had 2 homes in my life, now that's a car. I'm still the same person, with all the same principles, ethics and morals. Don't be fast to judge, you never know what someone is going through (houseless or not). If you give, give from the heart not expecting anything in return. People like this scammer woman are gonna regret it (i sound like dharman, lmao). I just say let it be on them if they scam me. My intention was pure. I give when i can and don't ask what they'll buy with it. Look at every big charity, and the money distribution of theirs. Directors get SOOOOO much, while a very little percentage goes to help those in need. This one woman cannot possibly scam more than they do, but we don't talk about that.

My eyes were opened by two experiences. One was when my grandma showed me how people in the city had been fakers. The second was in winter, where there was an obviously homeless man who was not pan handling. My stepmother bought him hot food and a hot coco. The man burst into happy tears and thanked her. Since those experiences, I now offer food instead of cash, and that is how I've learned to pick out the fakers. The fakers almost never accept the offer of food. I actually had a faker scoff at me because I offered to buy them a meal and then they said only cash would help them.

It was extremely messed up during the lockdowns, at least around where I live. My husband and I were also out of a job, but we were blessed enough to stay afloat, so we always helped these families when we could. Then quarantine ended, and there they still were, keeping their babies out in the brutal Texas heat. Winter came, one of the coldest we had in decades, and there they were, with their kids. Then one day, they disappeared, but not just them, ALL panhandlers vanished. Signs were put up all over the city to discourage giving money to panhandlers. As it turns out, letting your toddlers run in traffic isn’t a good idea, and now even the people who actually do need the help are screwed over by these people’s disgusting, manipulative, selfishness. Everything about that situation makes me sick and regret ever helping them and encouraging their disgusting behavior.

back in 2012, i worked at chick-fil-a, and my heart broke when my manager told a woman standing at the end of the drive-thru with her baby that she had to leave. customers had been giving her money or buying her sandwiches, and i was working drive-thru and was the one who told him about it. i felt really guilty as i watched him tell her that she had to leave the premises. and then she stepped into her modern mercedes and drove off.

You really had me in the first half- but I had a similar thing happen to me. A houseless man approached our window when I worked at McDonald’s, and he was asking if we had any leftover food. Since I was new, I went in and asked a manager and I was told to not give him anything (assuming that he’d keep coming back for more), and it really upset me. We waste so much food already, so to see hungry people being denied cheap scraps made me hold an even deeper resentment to establishments like McDonald’s altogether.

Yes I love that this resurfaced. I was a homeless youth and man I had the same pair of ripped shoes for 5 years with the same ripped pants and a few different colored shirts. I’d only eat at school during lunch hour and when winter came man it wasn’t easy. I’m now sleep in a bed under a roof but my god to see someone try and act homeless is disgusting

Similar thing happened for me. I used to work at a Dunkin’ Donuts store near the subway. Right outside our store, a homeless man would sit on a crate between our store and the subway everyday asking for money. I’d always give him a dollar or two before I entered the store to start my shift. I’d also give him a cup of water and free coffee and donuts whenever he asked. He was always grateful for what I gave him. During my last few months there, he stopped coming at his spot and I assumed something bad happened to him. I’d sometimes look out the windows from the store to see if he was there or not. He really liked glazed donuts and liked his coffee with milk and sugar

I have a similar story, my Dad actually knows multiple homeless people, I remember this one time, we were stuck in a traffic jam, and this one homeless guy actually got on the road and started directing traffic and he was actually doing a pretty good job, my Dad then pulled up to him and the homeless guy recognized my Dad, they talked for a while before my Dad went on his way, another homeless guy my Dad knows, I'm acquainted with him too, is this guy we give our leftovers to, I don't know what he does with the food that's gone bad, but he takes that as well

Panhandling is strangely becoming more and more common. Here in Missouri, Springfield has lots of them where if you give them money, they'll go off and buy something that is pretty obvious a homeless person wouldn't be buying. It's sad.

The thing that really upsets me is people treat homeless people like absolute garbage. The idea of moonlighting as a homeless person and then getting in your nice car, going back to your home, and relaxing on your couch while counting your cash is so incredibly scummy. Just inhumane. Taking money from real homeless people and ruining the trust people have in the arrangement so they hesitate to give when an actual disadvantaged individual shows up.
