I'm a classical musician. Upon seeing the passionate man at a lecturn, arms raised in obvious, emotional mid-performance, my thoughts immediately went to the bravery and tragedy that defined the life and works of the great Russian composer, Dmitri Shostakovich, who used his art to strike a defiant blow to Stalin despite the great personal cost he paid as a consequence. Instead of buckling under tremendous pressure and threat of unimaginable loss to produce works of great patriotism and support for Stalin's communist regime _as demanded by Stalin himself,_ he used the facade of patriotism to fill his works with scarcely concealed messages of the brutality and horror everyday Russians were faced with, from outright hiding codes in the notation to, more often, themes that used the pomposity and bravado of the army marches to deliberately juxtapose them with desperate emotion and clear pleas for sanity in a way that went past sarcasm and exposed the ridiculousness, obscenity and inhumanity of Stalin's propaganda alongside the horrifying truth; exposed to Russia, and to the World. Doing so right under Stalin's nose obviously had consequences before long, and here is an excerpt from an article about him that describes the kind of cost Shostakovich knowingly accepted as the price for his heroic sacrifice in refusing to glorify Stalin's regime and instead sending a much-needed message to the world - though once you've read the following, I think you'll agree that no-one could have faulted him for acquiescing: "That same year, many of his closest friends and relatives were imprisoned or executed, including his patron Marshal Tukhachevsky; his brother-in-law, the distinguished physicist Vsevolod Frederiks; his great friend the musicologist Nikolai Zhilyayev; his mother-in-law, the astronomer Sofiya Mikhaylovna Varzar; his uncle Maxim Kostrykin; and his colleagues Boris Kornilov and Adrian Piotrovsky. In 1937, he himself was summoned for interrogation and only escaped due to a twist of fate: his interrogator was arrested before his own appointment came. His income dropped by 75% and he ran out of money. His wife was pregnant. He kept a small suitcase packed for his inevitable arrest. He began sleeping in the stairwell out of fear. As conductor Mark Wigglesworth says: “It is hard to imagine what that kind of fear must feel like. It is impossible to know what it must feel like as a permanent condition of life.”" So with all that running through my mind, I steadied myself in anticipation of being greatly moved by the powerful orchestral work this Russian composer had created and was now conducting a performance of in brazen defiance of the new dictator, undoubtedly at great personal cost like his countryman before him. Finally feeling ready, I pressed play. ... ... ...I was not ready. At all.

Reminds me of his Shostakovich's 5th Symphony. It was a desperate attempt at self-preservation because of the piece "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District." It had been a popular and critical success, but all it took was one disapproving viewing by Stalin to cause him to be considered a pariah and to live in the stairwell out of fear. Under that pressure, he wrote the Fifth Symphony, which he sadly felt had to be titled “A Soviet Artist’s Response to Just Criticism.” Composers are hard to be forced into a mold, and he wasn't in this Symphony despite the incredible pressure. All four movements are complex and masterful in the beauty of the composition and interwoven mock patriotism-only enough to fool and satisfy the politicians. It is a masterful piece of beauty in the face oppression. The bars in the clip of this man express their message of passion in the face of the cold Orwellian stares of those in front who might judge him, and those behind him who snicker out of their lack of comprehension of his true genius. Shame.

Charlie, you just don’t understand the complexity of his wordplay. “I’m a pimp on a blimp eating steak and shrimp.” When he says that he is a pimp on a blimp, he’s talking about how high he gets. And what do people do when they get high? They get the munchies and eat. He sets up the steak and shrimp line so perfectly. Though, he’s not eating junk food. This is high class dining which he alludes to earlier when he says he’s teaching. It’s genius wordplay that only the greatest shakespearean-level writers can achieve.

I concur, however; "eating steak and shrimp" could be a metaphor for consuming so called "high class" products and society's push to always have the best and trendiest things one can afford. I cannot get over the immaculacy of the lyrics. I'd love to talk about the whole song, but the show is stolen by "I'm a pimp on a blimp, eating stake and shrimp." This lyric conveys so much despite its initial simple masquerade. Clearly, the use of the word blimp refers to his figurative positon relative to everyone else. His elevated state of being is so superior to any other person that it is as though he is miles above them and that any of his thoughts display a higher level of competence than an average person can typically muster. Though, I do feel that he may have undermined his sheer ability. If I were him, I would've compared myself to that of a rocket, a satellite, or something even higher than that. However, I can understand the use of blimp in order to remain humble and to better service this perfect line in the frame of rhyming. Refering to himself as a pimp has a similar effect to the blimp analogy. Pimps are known to withhold a large amount of wealth. In this lyrical miracle, wealth serves as a allegory to a desirable state of mind, that being one unplagued by the weights of this world and having a spiritual connection with one's self and their life. Wealth is typically regarded as withholding exactly the opposite conntation, but that is exactly why I believe that this is the message of this word in this lyric. Consdiering the analogy of the blimp, this connection to the world pimp makes far more sense. This connection is further established by the fact that pimp and blimp rhyme. Sharing a connection such as this refornces the similar position each of the words take in this metaphorical masterpiece. The next phrase, revolving around stake and shrimp, elevates this lyric to a whole to level. At first, I was somewhat confused by the inclusion of these two words, but alas, upon my pondering, I believe I have uncovered an immense and great truth that these words convey. In Chinese, the word for shrimp sounds similar to that of the laughter of children, and thus shrimp have taken on a symbolic meaning centering around ideas of joy and fortune. Now, this could mean two things in the framework of this musical phrase. It's difficult to dispher weather the eating of the shrimp refers to the acceptance of joy and and fortune, or its destruction. Alas, I believe, that in the mastery of this hardcore flaming wordage, both metaphors apply. In reference to the Unkraine situation, as it meant to be taken from this excellent rap, the destruction of joy and fortune seems to be quote promenemt. However, it could be argued that a representation of hope also exists in the shrimp metaphor, thus highlighting the more positive outlook I beleive this phrase withholds. While this may seem to be a bit of a stretch at first, the use of the word cow ties together this theme. Cows often represent life, fertility, and origin. Considering this to be in tandem with the rest of the lyric, and especially with the shrimp metaphor, the use of the word cow could very well be an optimistic view on the future of this horrible situation. In the brief destruction of joy and fortune, a better and strong tomorrow can be though to eventually emerge in which the land is fertile and life is promising. Quite a great message, if i do say so myself. This man is a musical mastermind!
