I watched this before and commented on the blog but I just love it so much, that I was happy I stumbled upon it again. It's just so true, and something we need to be hearing!!

Love, love, love this video! I hope you incorporate it in your ed courses (I don't remember this specific advice given in the courses I took 3 years ago through you.) Awesome! And I WILL remember to do just this! Thank-you!

Well here I am on the hunt for the profession my natural music skills can fit with. Watching all these you tube videos looks similar to my humble experiences in rest homes, group homes, day programs, births, weddings, political events, church services, funerals etc. But somehow it is depressing and draining working in some of these places. Maybe because I was doing to make money or make a point. I wish I felt like this was my calling. How do I know?

Cathy Mahardy Hi Cathy! Hmmm - That is a great question. How do we know our calling? I'll preface this by saying it's Kat Fulton here, founder of MusicTherapyEd.com. My opinion is that you know it's your calling when you feel expansive inside, when there are moments of "ah-ha," when you feel the passion rushing through you. The depressing and draining aspects can happen in any field. I would say that the benefit of music therapy is that there is *plenty* of self-care support systems in place, because so many MTs are prone to burnout. How do you know? Maybe it's that you DECIDE, instead of the clouds breaking open with angels singing =) That's how it was for me, and the rewards have been incredible! Best wishes and good luck on your hunt =) Kat

Wow, I never really thought about this in that perspective. It makes so much sense though, as (especially) a health care professional you would want to be more concerned and understanding of others and their needs. With that being said, you would want to do your BEST in providing whatever it is that they desire and need. I am not a Music Therapist, but a Music Therapist major. Most of the time when I tell people what my major is, they would either ask me "what is music therapy", "how can you help people through music therapy", or don't even say anything afterwards. To be honest, it is kind of discouraging and it makes me question myself of whether or not I should even pursue Music Therapy, but I must remember that what I am doing CAN help change lives for the better just like with any other profession out there. Thank you so much for this video!

Yes!!! And I love your perspective on it too! It is easy to get discouraged in this regard, but like you said, we must keep in mind the many lives that we are/will be impacting! Thank YOU for watching!

Music Therapy Ed How do you prevent burnout as a music therapist? I had some experience in music education, but reluctantly made a change due to burnout...

I became sooo interested in music therapy this year after meeting with kalani das in California. I want to be a music therapist for school districts in California. Or in other words start a program for special ed kids. I am in the process to transfer to cal state Northridge for my bachelor's degree. What you think of my career plan and even i want to start my own music therapy business. I believe that my beliefs of collaborate the healing power of music and advocacy of special education

I love your passion for music and special education, Carol! There are many music therapists who share that passion with you, and have created programs in their school districts and their own music therapy businesses-- if that's your dream, go for it! :)
