29:25 one thing that was absolutely necessary was a Tappet hole protector tool. It prevents the valve spring compressor tool from scratching the inner bore of tappet hole. The rotating part always makes contact with the inner surface of the bore and scratches the bore. That's why you shifted from the big dia adapter to the small one. Also there's nothing scary about a worn out valve guides. All you need to do is repalce all of them along will all 16 valves. I had worked on CBR1000rr SC59 on which I had replaced all 16 valve guides. It's always better to replace guides than to replace the head entirely...

OC: rebuild, you dont know what has happened to a replacement motor, I had crank bearing failure on my 2016 MT-07 (FZ-07 in 'murica) due to adding a pit limiter and launch control so i put a second hand engine in and that failed after a couple months so i had it rebuilt and not had an issue since. Besides, seeing an engine being rebuilt is a pure artform to me
@uscgmike86-864 жыл бұрын
I rebuild cylinder heads (diesel)... to replace the guides you have to heat the heads in an oven to over 300° while soaking the valve guides in liquid nitrogen (metal compresses and expands with temp) then, VERY QUICKLY, set the valve guide in to the correct depth and let cool down... if there's even a SPEC of dust in the cylinder bore or guide the guides get stuck and you have to press it out and start all over lol! Its a pain in the ass and yes, very expensive... just find another engine... there's too much money involved between the crank being scored and pistons being trashed oil pump etc. Just buy another one. Still fun to watch though!
@timothybayliss66803 жыл бұрын
I have done it once on a crank bearing. I put the crank in the freezer as cold as it would go and put the bearing in the oven at 200°. It dropped right on with no hammering and it wouldn't budge in a couple seconds. It actually really surprised me because I had to cut the old bearing race off.

I just watched the entire video! Take my advice my friend and source a used engine. Purchase a 2012- 2016, low mileage engine from a reputable dealer. First time I've sat through an entire WBR video in a very long time. You guys did a great job on this episode. Not a lot of corny jokes on Chase's part and not a lot of holier-than-thou attitude from Brian. It was very interesting to see a careful disassembly of the valve train. See what the machine shop says in regards to the guide issue before buying a used engine. It would suck to disassemble another one just to find more problems.

From what I remember, that generation of 1000RR's had an oil burning problem, too, (-among others). I believe '08s and '09s had the most issues. This bike was not built to Honda's usual standards. One time on a school trip to the Mugello circuit we spoke to a former MotoGP mechanic, he told us that rough surfaces are better because they "trap" fluids, and those trapped fluids work as some sort of "lubricant" since a fluids that slides on itself has barely any friction, so it would flow faster (hopefully i've explained this well enough, i'm good at english but not so good at technical stuff). Also, good thing you had an old school valve extractor tool: i went to a mechanic school and we had a tool similar to that only pneumatic..one day a 1st year kid left his thumb between the valve and the stud, when he started pushing at the other end to expose the valve stem you can pretty much imagine what happened..i didn't see it happening but he almost lost his finger..
@indegoadult4 жыл бұрын
That is generally in relation the the cylinder sleeves you want them to keep oil in the sleeve so its not perfectly smooth but kind of rippled, they showed and spoke about it in a couple of episodes back.

OC Tricky choice. If I was building a bike for myself I'd buy a new (2nd hand) engine, but as you're sending this to a supporter of your chanel then you need to know the engine is good, and a Brian rebuilt engine will give you that piece of mind. In the latter situation, I'd maybe look at buying refurbed head and rebuild the bottom end as per your plans 🤔

They're working on "newer" Hondas, while I am sitting here working on a 40 year old Honda CB450, I haven't had any issues with the engine, even after it was sitting in a salvage yard for the past 20+ years. Currently my only issue is due to the 40 year old electrical components for the CDI... saddly they dont make replacements for those, so its a roulette game on getting one that isnt fried.

@@LaLa-Bane Oh, Ive done that, the problem is the CDI box on these go out, there is a 1 in 5 chance that a replacement will also be bad and because these units are no longer produced its a matter of buying used ones until you find a good one. OC - do a proper cost analysis. Talk to the machine shop and get an estimate for the known issues, if they even do the work. Then compare that price, plus a percentage for overrun, to the cost of a new-to-you engine. That really is the only and best way to look at this horrible situation.

Do they ever show what this would cost? It's gotta be a lot! I'd be curious to know what they would charge for a basic rebuild of a stock motor, say, just a full inspection, lapping valves, maybe a hone and new rings, vs. a stage I and stage II rebuild (hopped up).

OC: rebuild it... as a former race team and shop mechanic I've seen way worse, Guides really ain't that bad as long as the head isn't messed up, if the motor isn't FUBAR'd, then just buy some parts and get it running... but in the end you have to think about the money in the end...which way costs more to do.... let say the head work and the motor fixes are on the more pricey side.. and you buy a used motor..... like Brian said you never know what you're getting so you'll have to take it at least partially apart to check the condition of the donor motor.
