Movies like this really makes me realize how amazing my nana is for fostering over 100 kids through out the years. She'd even save all the money she got for fostering and always handed them all of it when they turned 18. Alot of them still come to the Holliday and some have sent wedding pictures and college graduate pics and she saves them all. She manely only took kids from the age of 12-16, and I remember asking her about it and she said " everyone wants to little kids and babys but no one wants the older ones, they need homes too" that really stuck with me.

I think it’s likely that Simon’s mom actually left a nice message on the recording device. It’d be odd to go to all that trouble just to chew out your son. The fact that he recorded over it could just mean that he doesn’t care what she has to say, and considering his past you can’t really fault him for that.

The thing you have to realize about some drug addict behavior. They can often simply tell you what you want to hear but, in the end, they lie. The drugs always end up as more important than the people. She could have been sweet and apologetic in the message, but to the kid that doesn't MEAN anything because they always go back to their old habits and behaviors. So, it may have been a sweet, good message, but I can see why a kid like Simon wouldn't care about it at all if he has gotten to the point that he just can't trust them anymore.
@beyondviolet

@@silensviator yeah I know, but my original point about it being a nice message still stands. In the moment they might genuinely feel sorry and want to reach out, but it’s hard to trust someone who’s hurt you like that so much, especially if it’s someone that’s supposed to care for you.

I actually thought that he recorded over it because even though it was a last message from his mom, he loves his friends so much that he decided it was more important to help them than to keep the message, which really shows how he grows throughout the story.

as a addict's kid there's also a huge chance that: it was an apology message for the mom to feel better about herself and the kid heard it so many times, he didn't care at this point. It also could be an instruction on how he can "help mommy feel better by bringing her her favourite stuff and how to do it without cops noticing. You love mommy so you know how much she needs it, she'll stop after this one last time".

I'm so sorry for your situation... Is hard for me to relate, I can only tell you you're certainly stronger and on the right path to healing. I had a friend who was and probably still is dependent on her mother's approval. Oddly enough her father is alright but too passive and quiet, probably because he's a foreigner who thanks to his wife he managed to integrate. This former friend begun to mirror her mother's "manipulative" behavior (she's bad at it). I broke relations due to her current boyfriend being an overly apologetic and probably divergent... I can't enable her behavior especially on what she seems to idolize

Yeah, just watching the review for this movie kind of fucked me up. This is the most poignant acknowledgement I've ever seen of just how pervasive cPTSD is, even as an adult. I'm 23 and I still have 'trauma dreams.' I still have moments where something random unlocks a bad memory that I had previously forgotten about. I still have pretty screwed up things that I never knew about that I get told about by my grandparents. It's something that no one ever really points out - just how much it sticks with you and becomes inescapable in your day-to-day life, regardless of how much you try to be 'normal.'

We were renting our apartment (it's a newer building and it attracts tourists since it's covered in vines and all the outer walls are windows) and they asked if they could rent it for a bit to film something. They didn't end up choosing our place, but he's a really chill dude. Broke my shutter switch so now you have to hold it down for it to go all the way but I forgive and forget. I randomly came across this beautiful little film one rainy weekend, and it genuinely does hit with an impact that I am fond of. Like dogs, most don't want a a kid who is older and already has their own personality that couldn't be molded in their way. I came home from school in 2006 and found my dad just left. My mom left at 6, so I guess coming out lesbian at 16 was just enough to for him to not want to deal with me solo anymore. After 4 sets of foster parents my my parents adopted me when I was turning 17. They are always there, supportive of me and being LGBT, and have even provided the healthcare, even as a broke grad student, this whole time. I'm turning 33 in a week, without them, I would have been far deeper into the addiction black hole or dead, like a lot of homeless LGBT youth

I’m aware its pretty difficult for older kids to get adopted by a family, even more if their LGBT (for some people) and I’m glad you were able to find parents who loved you unconditionally. Stories like this make me realise how lucky I am for a biological family who love me and try to support and understand me as an LGBT individual.

8:55 I was once taken to a child center when my mom was arrested for abusing me. The look on Courgette's face that first night of sleeping in a bed in that place, the scary feeling, the strangeness of it all, is so realistic it took me right back to those first scary nights there. I got to leave, though. The other kids didn't.

Although I’m not an orphan, I still heavily relate to the kids with trauma and how it affects them. Sometimes just simple fun things suddenly remind you of painful memories, and sometimes your body just tries to cope with it without you even knowing (I usually shake or tap things, and I’m always playing with my hair from anxiety).

And at first my mom thought it was just a “child’s movies” but when we saw it and left the cinema, I could tell by the look on her face she gave me that her thought of it changed completely. And honestly, me too. I cried during almost the entire movie and my mom too. I also had the chance to see all the process of the films creation and it was a lot of work. But I only could recommend to watch this movie no matter your age. But watch it with good company or you’ll be depressed by the end of it

i am sadly one of the majority of people who has grown up with trauma. knowing that this movie had represented it very well, especially with zucchini because i relate to him most. it sucks knowing that there's other little kids out there who have been through the most depressing things ever. no child deserves that and should be raised by supportive parents. it hurts most when you realize these kids were brought into the world to be neglected rather than cared for.

I'm French, so as an answer for a couple of stuff you said: Gilles is pronounced closer to the English name "Jill" and it's a man's name. Also, the title is a bit different. Autobiographie d'une courgette means autobiography of a zucchini. The book is a LOT worse than the movie. Zucchini's mom is the same pretty much except on top of that she has chronic pain from a car accident that screwed her leg, which is why he plays in the attic because she can't climb up there to beat him up because of her leg. One day, the mom is cursing the sky for having taken her husband (because he left to travel the world with a "poule", an old-fashioned term for a woman in French that translates to female chicken) and Zucchini hears her yelling. He finds her gun by accident and because he thinks the sky stole his dad, he decides to shoot at the sky so it'll give him his dad back. His mom is scared so she fights him for the gun and Zucchini accidentally shoots her. Except he doesn't understand what guns are so he doesn't understand at first that he just killed his mom. And then he's taken to the orphanage. So already pretty horrible stuff. Raymond's son is alive in the book and there are more children in the orphanage and that's basically the focus, just all the kids and their little quirks as well as their history & trauma. Also "Météo", the thing on the board, means "weather", as in the weather presented on tv or in the newspapers.

As a stop motion enthusiast (I’m a sculptor by trade) I remember watching this for stylistic quality. My bf at the time wasn’t a SM fan nor did he like subtitled pics..but would always watch with me (bc love?) ANYWAY, when I tell you he rolled onto my lap and silently cried, we had a big talk about feelings afterwards and I feel like he understood emotional artistic integrity afterwards. But yes, five years on, I can’t watch without crying thinking about the fact this film allowed him to cry and let go of pent up emotion. It let him be open. Sometimes we need an excuse.

Edit: 16 minutes in and I'm so glad Mr. Pig made this point. Also shows how well written this video is as he's able to lead us into his conclusions through his story telling. Edit 2: Crying at the end with the mood board I'm only 14 minutes into this video, and as someone with CPTSD, the flow of this movie sounds like what it feels like to live with trauma and flashbacks. One minute you're happy, the next you're caught up in old pain. Even the good things hurt. It's an emotional rollercoaster, much like Mr. Pig describes this movie. As an artist, I think it's really fucking cool that they managed to give the audience the emotional experience of living with trauma (be it for about 90 minutes) while telling stories of trauma and recovery.

i know it’s a super small detail but i really like that they didnt just portray the mom having ocd as she obsessively scrubbed everything but that she was flicking light switches obsessively bc that’s more realistic of ocd and what people usually stereotype ocd as being like super clean/organized is actually a misconception and they are getting it confused with _ocpd_ or _obsessive compulsive _*_personality_*_ disorder_ which is more of the stereotype that people give ocd. again i know it’s a super small detail but i think it really drives the reality home with stuff like that.

Watching this movie and seeing the beginning scene where there’s beer cans (different brands) laying all over the apartment…and then Zucchini cleaning up after his mom and using the cans as building blocks…. that was literally my wake up call to get my drinking under control. I actually randomly came across the movie in a discount bin at some random store, thinking my kids would like it lol.

In my second year of highschool my French teacher put this on for the class and looking back I feel so bad for the teacher, she tried to show us something really interesting and improve the quality of the class and not a soul took it seriously, I understand why the teacher left at the end of the year and I regret not paying attention to the movie because it's amazing

Absolutely sobbing 😭 my mother killed her self and my dad was a creep. I was in foster care going from house to house for years. I've never seen this movie and I'll probably never have the courage to watch it. But I'm glad I watched this. Thanks man x

I just wanted to quickly mention that this movie is a Swiss/French production, not just French, Swiss animation is basically nonexistent and I’m happy that the something like this is made by someone from my country (Switzerland)

Just so you know, the movie is adapted from a short novel, which differs quite a bit. The adaptation actually was a bit tamer compared to the book, which had Courgette accidentally shoot his mom with a gun in the beginning, when he initially meant to shoot at the sky. Maybe this was toned down because of the actual child voice actors on set too, because this wasn't really a book aimed at kids. We had to read it back in highschool, and it was just as sad and touching, if not a bit more violent on some sides, because if I remember well, in the novel, more than one kid has explicitly been SA'd ...... Also, the french song the movie ends on is very famous, and loved here in France, but it's known to be especially sad. It's about having things ripped away from you and healing. Edit for even more sad trivia: The reason he drew his dad on a kite in the movie/tries to shoot at the sky in the book is because his mom told him that his dad had "gone up"/because his mom often swears to God.

Wanna know one more depressing fact ? The end credits song is a cover of the song "Le vent nous portera" by the band Noir Désir, who's singer Bertrand Cantat is very well known in France for HAVING MURDERED HIS WIFE... I don't know if that was intentional, this is just my interpretation. But given how much detail was brought into this film, it wouldn't surprise me if it was. Anyway it feels sooo good as a French person to see one of my favorite American youtubers review such an underrated and beautiful piece of French cinema !!! Thanks for the review man !

Having watched this video, I need to see this movie. I can't put into words how close this video's descriptions of the children's trauma alone came to breaking me. There is so much that some children deal with on a daily basis that I wouldn't wish on even the most vile adult. I could lie and say "I can't imagine the pain some of those fictitious children are going through" when growing up I went through so much absolute hell with my parents extremely messy divorce, emotional abuse, physical abuse, gaslighting, and watching my mom almost kill herself (multiple times) on a cocktail of random pills and booze I know exactly the feeling. Children shouldn't be so stressed and worried that they're gonna get beaten or shouted at or so thoroughly belittled by their own parents that they start getting stomach ulcers.

I remember watching this in French class and it left an impression on me via the art style. I was very bad at French and there were no subtitles so I didn’t understand what the movie was talking about or really about. I didn’t understand that the kids parent at the beginning died or that he was in an orphanage. But I remember still enjoying the art style and the quiet sereneness of the movie. It very much felt like we were watching another persons life. There wasn’t much music and the sound effects were echoey and it sounded a LOT like they were in an attic, or outside, or in bus depending on the scene ya know? Finding this and watching it I was hit with what this movie was actually about! I was shocked but also very tempted to watch this movie again. The movie felt so… homey. ya know?
